This particular film shows the very first DC-10 flight made on August 29, 1970 with the prototype aircraft.
The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 is a three-engine wide-body jet airliner manufactured by McDonnell Douglas. The DC-10 has range for medium- to long-haul flights, capable of carrying a maximum of 380 passengers. Its most distinguishing feature is the two turbofan engines mounted on underwing pylons and a third engine at the base of the vertical stabilizer. The model was a successor to McDonnell Douglas's DC-8 for long-range operations, and competed in the same markets as the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, which has a similar layout. The DC-10 had a poor safety record initially that was continuously improved over the years.
Production of the DC-10 ended in 1989 with 386 delivered to airlines and 60 to the U.S. Air Force as air-to-air refueling tankers, designated KC-10 Extender. The largest operator of the DC-10 is U.S. cargo airline FedEx Express. The DC-10 was succeeded by the related McDonnell Douglas MD-11. Boeing, which merged with McDonnell Douglas in 1997, conducted an upgrade program that equipped many in-service DC-10s with a glass cockpit that eliminated the flight engineer position; the upgraded aircraft were re-designated as MD-10s. The DC-10's last commercial passenger flight took place in February 2014, although freighter versions continue to operate.

I flew in that plane when I was 8 years old in 1978...non stop flight from Cleveland to LA. That plane was so big and we were told we passed through three storms and the plane just rocked gently. Been a fan ever since.

I also love (and will miss) the DC-10! Flew on it a couple of times. I love how its engines are So Powerful, and how it takes off at such a Steep angle and with So much speed! More fun to fly in than the 747 for this reason.

Actually, a cargo door did blow out in early ground pressurization testing prior to the first flight, so McDonnell Douglas was well aware that there was a problem with the poorly engineered locking mechanism. But they chose to put a band-aid on it and hope for the best instead of redesigning the door latches.

The reason the cargo door blew out over France was because a cargo handler failed to secure it.

@@terryeiss8469 Complete Bullshit. The cargo door handle could be closed flush without the door latches actually engaging and locking the door. Because it was such a shit job and inherently unsafe. Which MD brass knew all too damn well, as documentary evidence attests. Due to a sweetheart corrupt gentleman’s agreement between the FAA and MD, hundreds more people died after this shitbox was first pegged as a death trap

Jackson McGowen and John Brizendine should have been charged with the wrongful death of 346 passengers and crew on TK981, March 3, 1974. Check out his words at 12:25 where he says he HOPES it's as good a plane as they set out to build, fully knowing at this point in time that the cargo door had blown out during pressure testing. Then of course, the "dress rehearsal" for flight 981 - American Airlines 96 in June of 1972 - wasn't enough for these scoundrels to fix their plane.

MCD engineering could have run hydraulic cables in the ceiling like Boeing does also encase the cables in conduit piping as done with elec wiring even done in commercial use...since in theory the "tail" flies the plane these additions could have helped negate the cargo door loss in flight..again 20/20 hindsight..

No. The Boeing 747 is the REAL original Jumbo Jet. The A380 is the Superjumbo. About the McDonnell Douglas DC-10... An airplane which had a real fatal flaw... the bulk cargo door (AA96 & TK981). I also had a slight dislike of its rival, the Lockheed L-1011 (although I always favoured the L-1011 over the DC-10), favouring the Airbus A300B2 & B4 instead of the DC-10 and the L-1011 (the DC-10 is the thief of both the 747, L-1011 and A300, in my opinion). PS: Sorry for the (very delayed) edit. My opinion on the L-1011 changed considerably (changing opinion is still possible).

I was a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines. The DC-10 was my favorite widebody to work. It was so much easier to manage than the 747-100/400. It was a great aircraft! However, I think the widebody aircraft were fairly unnecessary. Look today and airlines seem to be shifting to single aisle aircraft for many int'l flights. Sure we have the A350 and B787, but they are much more efficient than the rest. Most of those widebody flights went out half empty or even less. It was such a waste and big money loser.
@philschroeder
@philschroeder 2 жыл бұрын
The ability for smaller, single aisle aircraft to cross the pond didn’t exist back then. Same with efficiency.
@cfrincon
@cfrincon 4 жыл бұрын
Sadly both the DC10 and the L1011 would be made redundant just a few years later with the introduction of the much more economically sound Airbus A300 and the Boeing 767. Effectively ending McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed’s bids in the comercial jet market.

Going Slightly Mad, that accident was totally preventable and 100% AA's fault for not following procedure when removing engines from the wings. (You're suppose to remove an engine from the pylon first, not the pylon from the wing while the engine is still attached; guess what AA did?) That said, very freaky, scary crash that--I too--will never ever forget; poor passengers and crew.

Yup blame poor maintenance on a plane. It was never in the brief to take engines off the wing using a fork lift! The cargo door, yep that's all on Douglas, but AA191 was all on American

This ugly excuse for a plane along with it's twin sister the L-1011 and the EXTREMELY ugly B-747 Jumbo Jet completely ruined commercial aviation forever. Generic looking flying sardine cans like these are disgusting and an insult to a once-great traveling experience. Airline greed destroyed the good times and it has gotten worse ever since. The Airbus 380 is BY FAR the ugliest plane ever built.

Stratus 262J wow! Rude to Boeing and Airbus for spending millions on their jumbo jet projects, Boeing nearly went out of business for their 747, Airbus spent decades trying to build the famous double decker, and here you come with your smart ass thinking that these marvels of engineering are just tin-cans! It's people like you that don't appreciate others' accomplishments that really piss me off, Boeing and Airbus have accomplished more in their life then you ever will, your just jealous of their success so you come here, and try to shoot down everything they did. And BTW, if your going to make a statement, actually use some evidence to prove that the B-747 and A380 are "ugly" cause an argument is virtually pointless without evidence to support a claim. Just a little tip for your foggy future!
