Hello!
In this video I explore the DC Metro's deepest stations. Wheaton Station has the longest escalator on the network (and in the entire Western Hemisphere) and Forest Glen Station is the deepest below the surface.
The colors should be better in this video. I figured out the problem and they should be good from now on.

Great video! But just so you know, Wheaton is not the 2nd-deepest, but the third. Woodley Park’s track level is 5 feet (1.5m) deeper than Wheaton’s.

Ah. Good to know! I guess I just assumed “longest escalator = second deepest station”.

@@nathantransitj I get that. I’ve seen it in several places, so I don’t blame you.

It really is crazy. It's a mixture of NIMBYism, soft soil, and a far more modern system.

And a small 1930s street stair on a sidewalk! Good luck with the channel. How will you differentiate yours from the dozens of teen railfan channels?

Forest Glen has 3 Rescue shafts. North and South one are also vent shafts. Middle one has service rooms and exit through a door instead of a hatch like North and South Vent shafts.

I'm a DC native and remember going up those escalators as a teen when trying to go to Wheaton mall. I nearly fainted. I havent been to Wheaton in years now partly due to this station and partly due to that station being notorious for robberies and stabbings.

In October of 2002 about half of the 13 Beltway Sniper attacks took place in that area of Montgomery County Maryland. The first decade of the century was a disturbing and chaotic time in the Washington D.C. area.

When I visit the DC/Metro area, Forest Glen is the Metro station I use to get into DC. I never knew the platform was that deep. Nice known fact.

The Wheaton Station escalator is truly deep. The first time down the “Down Escalator” feels like a trip into hell. Walking up the already moving “Up Escalator” two steps at a time means you can skip leg day at the gym.

You may have noticed the 3 button in the Forest Glen elevator between the platform and the mezzanine levels. Those buttons allow the elevators to access the emergency exit stairs in the same shaft as the elevators. Both ends of both platforms in the Wheaton and Forest Glen stations provide access to emergency exit stairs in the vent shafts at both ends of the stations. There are fire suppression sprinklers in the track bed of both platforms in the Forest Glen station, it is the only station in subway in the system with this type of fire suppression system. The Wheaton and Forest Glen stations are fitted with a backup generator to allow the operation of the escalators and elevators in the event of a power outage by the electricity utility. The two platforms in the Forest Glen station are not parallel to each other as the tunnels taper away from each other south of the station to stay out of the footprint of the piles of the Capitol Beltway bridge that passes over Georgia Avenue.

At Wheaton and Forest GLen. Both stations have Rescue areas. I retired from Metro 2021. I know I maintained intercom other devices at the Rescue area. That why elevator says R1 Rw,And R3

I have read that the worlds deepest metro, and thus longest escalators, are in Minsk, Belarus but it wouldn't be very wise to go there at the moment assuming that they'd let you in(and more importantly out!)?The Mid Level Escalators in Hong Kong are fascinating and effectively function as a form of public transport.

This station was supposed to be designed for Emergencies where smoke was coming from the train side of the station & elevators to exit to close the large doors on both sides of the center station! There were to design doorways on ech side to allow passengers into the 6 elevators center. The DC fire department ,at the time, wanted to be able to command all elevators to the top so they could access then to move their equipment & personnel to the bottom for the train access! This of course would cause panic at the bottom when the passengers were exiting in the smoke and lower building up at the elevators at the bottom! This was my meeting many yrs ago With DC Fire & other contactors involved. We came to a conclusion then that a compromise was 3 & 3, passengers' access & Fire Dept access to surface. Not sure how it was & is at this time? I was on the project for 10 Yrs as a System Safety Engr from a contactor GEC. Dick Bolt
