I enjoy Wilkie Collins' sense of humor. The labdlord here makes me think of the landlord in Moby Dick: sly, greedy, and candid in a prankish manner more than an honest manner. He doesn't lie per sé, but weasels around the truth of the matter, lying heavily by omission. Thanks, WNS for this pleasant narration.

Such a sad story. Seems like Mr. Loren let himself be punished for the actions of his father. He deserved to know his fiancée had thought of him in the week before her death. And Mr. Holiday deserved to know his brother. There is no such thing as illegitimate children, but sometimes there are illegitimate parents.

I much appreciate the pictures shown during the story. I am free to take or leave whatever elements fit. I knew that wicks needed to be trimmed, but this story made me look up and watch YT videos of the use of wick trimmers and a small, simple, but ingenious device to automatically snuff out a candle.

A story of two halves . The first part as frightening as anything by Poe. Unfortunately , Collins can't resist tacking on a fairly convoluted plot development in the second half of the story which undoes the atmosphere of terror built up in the first. Collins is very good but Poe - the real master - would never have made that mistake. He would have squeezed every drop of horror from the situation..

I agree. After the first scene, he really has nothing more to say that one or two additional sentences couldn't have accomplished.

Wilkie Collins just couldn't resist piling up coincidences and chance meetings in order to expand the plot . He was quite ingenious but he didn't know when to stop ! Poe left you in the middle of a nightmare .....no happy ending for him !
