Thanks, but no thanks. They're a little too pricey for me, I'll just keep eating the peanuts that come in the 16oz. round bottles and use them for the rolling log, use a quarter inch rerod and slip a McDonald's straw over the threaded rerod and you have the same thing, which costs about five dollars versus twenty dollars a piece. It's too bad the company didn't sponsor you, because I wouldn't have put up an alternative to that expensive device. LOL

I'm curious about the difference between the native mice and the invasive ones... I know your have explained it, but my question is about cross-breeding. Is it ever difficult to tell the difference, or do you just dispatch any mouse that doesn't have the clear native markings?

i made a similar setup for the mice in our barn. it's been my experience that putting RV plumbing fluid in the bottom instead of water adds (for lack of a better term) sweetness to whats down below and lowers their inhibitions. in my trail cams i sometimes see the mice just climbing the ladder and dropping right into the soup below rather than risking the barrel of death. car anti-freeze is far better, but then you have environmental issues to deal with later with the expired anti-freeze, although it allows you 4 season usage. downside is you'll no longer get to feed the mice to the local scrap pile attendees

The “walk the plank” style of trap is a proven winner. The “rolling log” is just a variation of the “walk the plank” But you’ve got to love the simplicity of the “bowl of oil.” The bait Itself is the trap, without it being laced with poison or anything else besides food. There’s a poetic beauty to the “bowl of oil” trap. Once a mouse is in it, the higher it climbs, the faster it falls.

The mice are hesitant to venture out onto the rod because it is so unstable. There has to be some intelligence controlling the ability of the rod to rotate. The German? inventor with the motor-driven drum understood the problem. He enabled the motor to run when the rodent electrically connected the two sections. A REALLY smart trap will have to work on the basis of video or some sort of optical sensor.
