It's already been said but Andrews was not as arrogant as he's portrayed in this "Smithsonian" video. He knew the ship was going to sink within an hour or two at most when she struck the berg and the Captain asked him to evaluate it. He was exactly right, she sank about 1hr 30mins after. He was one of the only high-ranking officials who wanted the ship to be more safe. He initially wanted 64 lifeboats, but people above him in the White Star Line wanted the ship to be less cluttered and to look more appealing. He also wanted the hull to be thicker, but that was moved against for similar reasons. They sacrificed safety for aesthetics, none of which was Andrews' fault. He went down with the ship, with varying accounts of where he was last seen (as with most of the people aboard). In the film, he was looking at the fireplace, which had a painting above it. It was a painting of the passage that the Titanic was supposed to reach heading back from its maiden voyage. He was seen looking at this painting, although until the very last moments in unknown. The man who mostly pushed against his recommendations for safety was the chariman of White Star, Bruce Ismay. He survived the sinking. However, his life was completely changed. He was publicly labeled a coward and shunned. He stepped down from his position and his family vowed to never speak of the Titanic, as whenever it was brought up he would break down. The only time he ever talked about it again was nearly 25 years after, when his grandson asked him if he had been in a shipwreck before. He only replied "yes, I was once aboard a ship thought to be unsinkable". So if you're gonna depict anyone negatively, have it be Ismay, not Andrews. Andrews was probably one of the only down to earth and realistic people in charge who cared about something other than greed and their career. Him and the many officers.

That’s not right. 1-fire in a coal bunker of a Victorian steamer was as normal as a tail strike of an aeroplane on take off. 2-Thomas Andrews knew that the watertight compartments weren’t topped off, which is why he knew that if the 5th compartment had ANY water in it with flooding on the 1st four too then the weight of that water would pour over the tops of the bulkheads. That is what he told the captain after assessing and seeing 5 compartments flooding.

This is completely false, Andrews knew the ship was doomed as soon as he saw that 6 compartments were opened to seawater. The pumps were working but he knew the math and knew that the rate of flooding was much greater than pumps could keep up with. It's shameful that Smithsonian would put this out when everyone who has studied the history of Titanic knows better. Titanic was built to survive multiple scenarios that included the front 4 compartments being flooded, 3 of the first 5, or any of the 2 mid compartments. She could not survive her six forward compartments flooded and that is precisely the damage caused when the berg punctured her starboard side.

@@yaboilemonboi5223 reversing the engines. James Cameron's Titanic movie shows First Officer Murdoch order Full Stop, then Full Astern. This order in the movie was to "dramatize" the situation, however on April 14th, 1912 Full Stop was ordered per the protocol. Full astern was never ordered. The engines barely slowed down 30 seconds Titanic struck the iceberg, in fact several maneuvers were made as a test with the Olympic, Titanic's sister ship shortly after the disaster using a fake iceberg. Every maneuver with the Olympic failed to avert a collision within the close proximity and speed Titanic was traveling right before the collision. So many theories and false hopes people have came up with over the years, in a nutshell the collision was unavoidable, Olympic proved this with the tests of maneuvers to try to recreate the incident with Titanic. The only way they could have avoided the collision was to STOP overnight and resume in the morning when the icebergs were visible. However it was commonplace in 1912 to steam full speed through dangerous waters. Although the inquiry affixed blame on the officers and crew, the officers and crew were following orders of the protocol of the outdated British board of trade regulations. The officers were not necessarily negligent, the outdated guidelines which were revised after the disaster is ultimately where the issues came into play. The officers and crew did their best to avoid any danger.

Half of what was required was in place, however over the mandatory regulations of 1912. Thomas Andrews exceeded the British board of trade regulations of 1912. The damage to Titanic's hull was extra ordinary, it was a freak accident, far from expected to rupture 6 water tight compartments. The design was changed and water tight bulkheads were extended higher along with a double skin or hull plating on the Britannic the 3rd Olympic class liner to be constructed. Even when Britannic hit a mine, it sank much more rapidly than Titanic. Fortunately of the 1,100 on board, there were only around 30 casualties

@allyvandergaast87464 жыл бұрын
Andrews didn't say everything would be fine. He said it was a qoute "mathematical certainty" that the ship would sink and even urged passagers to put on layers and prepare to board a lifeboat. Neither Thomas Andrews( the chief designer) nor Joseph Bell( the chief engineer) said that Titanic was "unsinkable" that was a creation propagrated by the press and the White star line. Andrews himself once said that RMS Titanic was practically unsinkable. But to my knowledge non of the designers believed she truly unsinkable. Though plenty of the passengers did . Something that likely added to the death count as many didn't actually believe the ship was sinking and refused to get in the lifeboats. In regards to the bunker fires I believe they where relatively common back in 1912. So ships were likely built with certain immunities. But even if the fire did weaken the hull, it probably wouldn't have been enough to sink the RMS Titanic without the added stress of the collision with the iceberg. So it could possibly be seen as a contributing factor but I don't believe it was the main cause. Keep in mind that I am a layperson at this juncture. I am not a engineer nor do I have any experience working on or designing ships and I also have no formal or rigorous education in this matter or anything similar. This is simple my logical conclusion based on my best guesses and everything else I know about the Titanic disaster.

no, but that would have flooded the coal bunker and caused the bunker wall to collapse. This is exactly what happened in the boiler room 5 forward coal bunker. After boiler room 6 filled, including it's aft coal bunker, water started spilling over the watertight bulkhead into the boiler room 5 forward coal bunker. the thing is, unlike the bulkheads, the bunker walls separating them from their boiler rooms were not designed to be able to withstand the weight of the water. Eventually, the wall collapsed, and allowed a torrent of water into the boiler room.

I don’t think we will ever know the real truth, I have heard so many different versions, like, the company planned all this for insurance policy and everything went side ways, the company switched out the Titanic for Olympic and no one would notice, now it’s because of a fire and an Iceberg. It’s one of those things that is mysterious on what actually went wrong. Thomas Andrew’s knew it would sink after boiler room 5, he probably said all that to keep people from freaking out.

The titanic never sank. That was the last words of someone in the ship. The creator of that ship actually has 2 Boats The "Olympic" And The "Titanic" The creator of the boat knew it was gonna sink so he put the olympic on board instead of the titanic and the movie should be called The Olympic
