Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Over half of all animals in the open ocean drift in currents. Jellyfish cross entire oceans feeding on whatever happens to tangle with their tentacles. The jelly-like Portuguese man-of-war can harness sail power to fish with its deadly tentacles.
The big blue is the world's greatest wilderness, far from shore and many kilometres deep. It's a vast marine desert where there is little to eat and nowhere to hide. Yet it's home to some of the biggest and most spectacular creatures on earth.
This episode reveals what it takes to survive in this savage and forbidding world. We witness feats of incredible endurance, moments of high drama and extraordinary acts of heart-wrenching self-sacrifice.

Fun fact the Portuguese man o war isn't actually a jelly fish. they are siphonophore's is a colony of smaller animals the float the reproduction even the tentacles (which themselves can be divided up between digestion and attacking) are separate animals fused together. It's basically a very small floating carnivorous city.

Almost everyone who grew up in south Florida along the coast has a story about these things. For me I always knew not to mess with them but I had one drift up to me while surfing once and brushed up against several tentacles with my foot. My whole foot ached but my toes were the most painful. They were throbbing like someone had smacked them with a hammer. If you get it real bad the tentacles can actually break off while stuck to you. Instinctually you'll try to grab them with your hand to remove them and now your hands are stung as well.

@@ShadowFungus I poked what I thought was a plastic bag washed up on the beach. The next day, I had mosquito bite-like spots on my right hand. They spread up my right arm the next day, then down my left, to my legs, then eventually my entire body. They kept multiplying in number for a week or two. Not long after arriving back in Canada & hitting the cold, they swelled to the size of marbles & my skin felt like it was on fire. It was the kind of pain that just makes you feel helpless cause painkillers can't even touch it. My friend was on vacation when she was around 10 in the Bahamas and while she was swimming and going up to the surface, she swam right into a Portuguese man o'war. It made her fall unconscious but luckily she was fine. Now she has a lot of scarring all over her arms and mosquito bites don't affect her (they did before she was stung).

A ton of these washed up on a Florida beach when I was a kid on vacation, and my best friends and I collected them and put them in buckets. We had no idea what they were 😂 they were already dead and we avoided the tentacles, but still-I can’t believe we were a bunch of unsupervised 10-year-olds playing with dangerous jellyfish

The Portuguese man o' war isn't a jellyfish. It's a siphonophore, a collective colony in which all of the members have specialized functions but operate as if they were a single organism.
