box cutters can be amazingly sharp. i once was opening a box being careless and the blade slipped out of the cardboard and i felt it touch my hand. i was almost certain i was going to have a nasty cut but i looked at my hand immediately and saw nothhing and felt no pain. so i continued what i was doing and a few seconds later i felt something wet on my hand. the blade was so sharp i didnt initially notice or feel a thing. 20 plus stitches and almost to the bone. 10 years later and i still have very little feeling from nerve damage.

Thanks for posting the advice. I can attest to the value personally. While out late in Amsterdam years ago I was robbed. When surprised, I 'half drew' a Spyderco Endura from by waist (grab the hole and delpoy, handle locks on the way) but shifted to open hands when I saw no weapon. In the tussle he drew an X-Acto snap-off knife. I gave him pocket change and he ran away. Win-Win but I know to watch for those now. The idea of that snapped off in my gut was worse than facing a 'real' blade.

I used to work installing commercial irrigation systems and my leathermans rusted really bad. I returned the surge and tried the rebar and it did way better in my work environment but still rust spots every day. I did not wanted to use my SAKs for a job they where not designed to do so I ended up with one of these for work. Most thugs who try and rob someone with a knife expect an unarmed victim. I carry a folding/locking Stanley utility knife wherever I go. I use one at work to open boxes; I just keep it on my belt all day, every day. Never am I unarmed. I can draw it off my belt and flick it open in a second. The razor-sharp blade can cut anywhere on an opponent's body. It can slice through clothing, skin, muscle, and tendons. It is light, can be thrust and slashed fast at an opponent's face, eyes, neck, hands, arms, legs, etc. A little blood drawn from some scumbag who wants to assault me should change their cowardly mind in a hurry. I refuse to be a helpless sheep.

A family friend of ours got in a fight at McDonalds. I’m in Australia too. The other guy pulled out a utility blade and stabbed him in the forehead 3 times. He’s ok now but I agree, they’re easy accessible, cheap and sharp. Our knife laws are very strict but they need to be changed so that sensible knife users don’t get caught up in it. Most knife crimes are committed with kitchen or utility knives. You rarely hear of someone getting stabbed with a Spyderco or Benchmade.

Interesting vid, I once saw a 65 year old man stop a 24 year old weight lifting hard ass with a dollar store box cutter. The old man had been in jail many times and could not carry a weapon. Both were not the greatest characters to be around but when you need a job you need a job if you know what I mean and at the time that was the only one hiring.. The young kid threatened him and charged, the old man flashed a break off box cutter with the blade all the way extended. The kid backed off in a hurry. They will do a lot of superficial damage up close and personal. If I had no other choice I would carry one for self defence but it would never replace the compact 9mm or small frame 38 revolver that I edc. Being in situations like the one described above makes me think about life differently. I could defend against a box cutter bare handed but Im sure Id get cut up.It would only be deadly in skilled hands when an artery is cut. I know one thing it made that young hard ass think twice! Im sure the old man had seen more than his share of small blade attacks in jail too. Im glad I no longer have to work in that environment anymore but i still carry protection.

My moms friend was stabbed 7 times with a fixed blade knife while standing in line at the pharmacy. She had no idea she had been stabbed until she saw the blood. She actually thought the guy was punching her. What she felt was the hilt of the knife hitting her body after the knife had penetrated all the way in to her body. She made a full recover after spending about a week at the hospital. No major organs had been hit amazingly.

Many years ago I was working in a warehouse. After opening a box & forgetting to close the blade I accidentally stabbed myself on the back of my left hand! Thrusts from a box cutter certainly are not as bad as a cut but I still had to get 2 stitches & bled a good amount. Survivable yes, but still not something you'd want to happen on the street.

I just recently purchased an OLFA Heavy Duty cutter, i consider it a monster among the box cutters, cuts easily through meat and even small bones because its blade almost doesn't bend and sharp as a razor. In the U.K. I suppose there is one dominant brand of these utility knives, "Stanley knife". As another guy in the comment section mentioned they are used by thugs. They gained notoriety in football (yes that's "soccer" to all you Americans *rolls eyes*) hooliganism. Thank you for posting this video in what is probably a taboo topic among knife enthusiasts/collectors. For others being skeptical, think about the dangers of one of these things, your assailant would have a LOT of leverage and you have nothing to grab on to in an attempt to disarm (grab the blade and knock them out), just that tiny little blade that will slice straight through your hand. I think people should EDC a small cutter like the Gerber EAB, along with a regular folding knife. Some jobs are too dirty to want to use the knife on, and cardboard dulls knives quickly.

Outside of the US., there are strict rules about carrying knives in your pocket. In my country, its illegal to carry a foldable knife that locks, is spring loaded, the length of the blade itself cant be more than 3 inches long and 2 inches wide and total length of the fully opened knife cant be more than 6 inches or in some states 9 inches. In such a scenario, as my EDC i carry my stanley utility knife is perfectly within the norms, is unassuming and is the confidence i need to carry it withiut thinking i am breaking the law.

Utility knives have been the concealed weapon of choice with UK youth gangs for decades. If the police find one in a stop and search it's an immediate arrest offence that can carry a prison sentence upto 10 years. Friend of mine had his cheek slashed wide open with one, when he tried to break up a fight in a nightclub some years back. He was just trying to do the right thing. Nasty, vile object when used as a weapon. Ebay now prohibit utility knives to include blades in the UK, they allow blades to be sold separately though!! No knife can be sold here to under 18's, but like the no gun law, it doesn't stop those that want them from getting them.

I notice you keep mention the shipping industry well it goes well beyond that dude, I worked in the truck industry for over 10 years welding, fabricating, painting and we also had a mechanics division and every guy there had multiple utility razor knifes and they were used for all sorts of things and I personally used mine virtually on a daily basis and when you get into box cutters and single edged razor blades in the paint department we would use them as scrapers or as just a blade either way the whole blade was exposed and you could find those laying around the shop everywhere. Have you ever done drywall, let me guarantee you that anyone doing drywall work will have a utility razor knife on them for cutting drywall, even beyond drywall installers pretty much every handy man is going have one in their toolbox. I very rarely open boxes yet I have over half a dozen utility razor knifes and I use them for a multitude of different things. That Milwaukee Fastback you show in your video I have 2 of those and almost everyday one finds it's way onto my belt because of the multitude of uses it has, almost everyday I end up using it for something because it is a very versatility tool. I see a lot of people joke about these that it's not a real knife, ya it's not going to stab you but it can slash you and cut you deep, I have seen guys get seriously injured from an accident when using one of these so if somebody has the intent to injure someone with one of these it would be very easy.

Good thing is box cutters just cause lacerations. I think i have read that in most cases it takes a 3 inch would to do any real damage. Unless like he stated, cutting their throat. Joe Mcdunna the snap off blades were made to break off at each segment to reveal a new cutting tip, hence the name snap off blade, but mind u, these knives can easily cut right through flesh without breaking

UPDATE 9/12/2020: I'm going to summarize this video, because KZbin keeps promoting it and it leads to terrified people getting triggered before they listen to what is being said. What I said in the video is that you should be aware of the possible danger of getting attacked by a utility knife. Utility knives are cheap, widespread, easy to conceal, and produce horrific wounds. That is all. I do not support any sort of ban on utility knives, such a ban would be impractical, and utility knives are vital cutting tools for a variety of working trades.

I EDC a utility knife because, despite my best efforts to learn, I can't sharpen a knife to save my life. I'd love to carry a good Ka bar or buck, but they do me no good when dull. With a utility knife, simply change the blade and you're done.

Not true even a somewhat dull knife would be more useful using as a tool. It has longer blade for cutting apples and such can be resharpened and honed but like you say knife sharpening isnt easy.

I grew up in Brooklyn in the early 90s and the gem star single razor was the weapon of choice. They were usually wrapped with a thin layer of electric tape and carried between the cheek and teeth. I've seen so much damage done with those that it unbelievable.

omfg I just got made to feel shallow and superficial on a knife channel wtf. Whats the world coming too!! Joking aside great video.. and ill keep coming back to the stare at your knife collection. You speak a lot of sense about box cutters btw. Ive seen a lot of youtube videos analyzing attacks and assaults that initially seem like a closed fist attack. A box cutter in the palm or a lead weight, makes a very unskilled attacker lethal. Another great video, thank you.

Actually in the eyes of the law and judge and jury, it would be far wiser to carry a good utility knife as an improvised weapon, only because when you carry a "Scary" or "Tactical' looking knife in the sole purpose as a weapon, you will face the court in your state and possibly a jury. The prosecutor will slam you because of that and they'll put your intentions under a microscope. Especially if your blade caters to Zombie Killers. You know, the green handle, blood splatter paint blade. Or a heavy duty large tactical blade with a sawback and knuckle guard handle. They'll question why you even brought that to the fight, but if you just have w simple ( quality ) utility knife and use it for self defense, then you can bring a strong defense table to the court, stating you always have it BECAUSE ITS S TOOL not a weapon. See?

Taking utility knife to the club or place where you won't need that may look the same as taking there a tactical knife, it's out of place, it would look like preparing to fight. Axe or machetes are also 'tools' but no one takes them out of the context of using them.

That's why I carry a utility knife in my back pocket, and slashing doesn't require you to get in close or potentially lose your weapon
