The hands on the corner of the board are the album art for the new EP. Thad's bedroom door has "Der Hunter" backwards. In year 10 Drama, we were taught about the Verfremdungseffekt, or the Alienation Effect. The idea is that by doing something that the audience does not understand, it makes them try to think about what just happened. By creating that "Wait, what?" moment, the production successfully disconnects the audience emotionally. The purpose of this is to make them think about the production rather than feel. A completely realistic (or representational) performance provokes an emotional reaction, but something like this makes the audience think about what they saw and helps the creators get subtly woven ideas through to the audience. The protagonist being a tomato, Thad having that weird stuff on his face, the karate master out of nowhere, the aliens and even the name "Thad" being so close to Chad but not quite are all designed to make us think about the themes presented while also helping to create a memorable, out there and amazing performance.
