Curious what the heck The Dear Hunter is but have no where to start? Tired of your one friend always talking about this band and not sure what all the fuss is about? This video is for people completely new to TDH, as well as casual listeners looking for some refreshers on details.
It covers the history of the band, the general idea of the "Acts" saga, as well as an "evolution of" with little snippets from each album in order of release.
If you happen to notice anything out of date or inaccurate, just let me know and I'll either add an annotation or make a second part.
If you want to see more TDH content, as well as my own music and writings, feel free to subscribe. I plan on making an annotated analysis of the entire Acts series. The first video is already in the works.
For now, if you're looking for lyrical and story analysis, try this site out:

For the fanbase:

Also, check out the official r/TheDearHunter collaborative playlist on spotify, featuring songs that have a similar style to TDH:

(I'd like to brag that the playlist was partially my idea)
Note: I don't own the rights to any of this music. Just a fan.

I got into Tdh really young. my sister was a huge fan since act 2 released and she drove me everywhere as a kid so all of their songs remind my of her

In my opinion act IV is the best album, every song on it is amazing so i started there and then went on to listen to the rest. Gotta thank my dad for reccomending TDH.

Really appreciate this breakdown. I’ve decided to dive a little deeper into this band after hearing a few songs from Act IV and this has made it easier to get to know all their work so thanks for that :)

I've known The Dear Hunter for approximately 3 years, I remember listening to the full acts at least 3 times (act 1 & 2 however were listened many more times!) and listening to some of the other albums as well. This video is great because I had no idea about the random eps and the full album of the color spectrum and I'll definetely gonna give it a listen! All I need now is a full analysis on the Hunter's story, because I love song analysis, and despite being being over 5 hours of songs, it would be really entertaining, specially because I wanna know the whole story behind the songs but I'm also small brained wheeze... Anyways, great video!!! This made my interest over TDH get even bigger :)

Known about The Dear Hunter for a while now, but just recently started diving in to their discography, and man, never have I listened to a band that can pull off a concept like this, and do it so well. They've become one of my favorite bands! And great video, it was informative!

Late answer here, probably you already know it, but another concept that comes to my mind is Ayreon’s albums (from The Final Experiment to The Source) you should check it out if it is unknown to you, mostly if you’re a fan of sci-fi stuff. Said that TDH is an amazing band wich as you said has pulled off an amazing concept with those albums.

I Love literally every song by TDH but there’s this certain feeling to the songs less traveled on random and branches. I really like Untitled Soul Song and Isabella they’re just so,,, neat

I would not recommend starting with Act II. It's my least favorite, and I seriously doubt I would have tried any of the others if I had only heard that. I started with Act 5 and worked my way backwards (though I still can't find Act 3 on CD). It's true that Act 2 is similar to acts 1 and 3, but I like both of those better.

One thing that drives me nuts about Act 2, and that prevents me from listening to it as often as the others, is that Casey is slightly flat throughout the entire album. It don't know if this was a production issue, or if that's just what he actually sounded like while recording it. He always sounds like he's about to lose his voice. It's so grating that I can't stand it. None of the other albums have this issue to anywhere near the same degree, if at all.
