The voice singing "take more than you need, take enough to hollow me out" is the singer of Naive Thieves. They opened for the Dear Hunter years back. Just some band lore ^.^

You’ve probably looked it up since recording and posting this, but all of the 9 Color Spectrum EPs (plus another full length album called Migrant) were recorded and released in the years between Act 3 and Act 4, which likely lends to the maturity and complexity of sound (and probably the funding to do full orchestral recordings) for Act IV and V; they were written after Casey and crew had been refining their sound for nearly a decade. The Dear Hunter are something else. Just saw them in Chicago for their 20th anniversary tour and Casey’s voice just crushes live. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the EP reactions, the next two are probably my favorites. Loved your Acts reactions and longer form discussions, it was so fun to watch people who hadn’t heard them to grow to love them as much as long time fans.

Happy you liked it! The next EP is Red, and it has the songs I Couldn't Do It Alone, A Curse Of Cynicism, Deny It All, and We've Got A Score To Settle (you've heard the live version of this song). For future reference, the wikipedia article for the color spectrum has a good outline of all the EPs, as well as some more info about the intentions behind the collection and guest artists on different tracks.

@@jakegonzales9616 ‘We’ve got a score to settle’ is currently one of my favorite songs by The Dear Hunter. After we reacted to the live version that song instantly became part of my life. Can’t wait to hear the rest. We’ll keep going Ep by Ep. Thanks Jake! Really appreciate these suggestions and the road you’ve put us on ✌️

Jake kinda touched on it. But not only is it "what would this color sound like?" but every color is it's own genre. Black: industrial rock, alternative rock Red: grunge Orange: blues rock, hard rock Yellow: psychedelic rock, pop rock Green: folk, country Blue: soft rock, experimental rock Indigo: electronic rock Violet: baroque pop, alternative rock White: alternative rock, progressive rock

Wicked as hell, man. I'm really glad you guys enjoyed your first foray into The Color Spectrum. Definitely recommend listening to Never Forgive, Never Forget on your own time without the video if you haven't already. His final scream in that song is so, so raw. I'm especially happy to see how much fun you guys had with Filth and Squalor. That's my personal favorite from Black, if not for the awesome sound throughout, then for the fact that every single line is utterly _brutal_ in its presentation and its message. My interpretation of what they did with Black (at least sound-wise) is that it invokes the void and nothingness, of course, but it specifically draws on the _potential_ from and of nothing. The beginning of every song has some kind of ethereal, spacey, or claustrophobic sound going on before it opens up into a veritable engine of chaotic electronics and grinding industry. It makes me think of the Big Bang and the coalescing of atoms and materials into planets and stars in space, or sparks in the darkness, or even ideas from nowhere. And, on the other side of that, I feel like the lyrics kind of complete the cycle of things, with their focus on breaking down, decaying, or ending, and the potential to rebuild from things being reduced to nothing. Very excited to see you guys' thoughts on the other colors, and what you make of the way they were interpreted. 🖤

I’ve listened to this a bunch now since we did the reaction. I do like Never Forgive, Never Forget much more without the video sounds, but I stand by where I first landed here. I think Filth and Squalor and This Body are still my favorites on this EP. Can’t wait to keep digging in. Oh, and I agree with Sue, I absolutely love your take on this EP. Especially when you said ‘where ideas come from’. This is a concept that my brain’s been stuck on for a couple years now. It is mysterious isn’t it? Do we manifest ideas ourselves or do we receive them? Any creative person can tell you that ideas tend to just show up. You can’t put effort into manifesting ideas. They’re either there for you to grasp or not. The ones that are forced are never good. The ones that are captured tend to be the best and most unique. I think it’s up to us to be good antennas. I love the idea this EP can be interpreted this way. ✌️

I'm a few days late but it was a nice Turkey Day surprise! Be forewarned, the Black and Red EPs are the heavier ones. Purple is the most theatrical. It's a very interesting ride. Thanks for continuing the journey!
