I had fun with the mix. I have limited tools to mix so it was a quick one for me. I gave it my all so did my cat. Drums were tough, the kick drums one sounded like it had a pillow in it and the other no pillow. . When i watch all the pro style mixes, I realize I have a lot to learn and a lot of goodies to eventually purchase. Like I said in another video the fun part of this is the learning is never ending. Great mix!...For me the winner trick here is the match eq for the second kick using the first as reference...i tend to do that a lot when it is not posible to achieve the desired result using other ways...and also for widening back vocals if i don't have doubled (left, right) performances sometimes i tend to dublicate the track, set the original hard left and the copy hard right and delaying 20-30 ms the copy(right)...but anyway the microshift plugin does the job.

thank you so much for all your help kristian you are amazing. Hi Mr Kristian. I would like to suggest you 3 alternatives to snare drum sample . 1.Open a second channel and insert a white noise generator. The in the same channel put a gate and side chained it with the snare . 2. Gate reverb 3. It's one that I tried for my own entry I've send the snare to the vocoder of my korg microkorg . I put the volume of osc 1 and 2 all the way down and i maxed the white noise generator. I like the result and I thinking of using it in future projects. Hope you find these info useful.

EQ match in pro-q3, saturn for drive, same eq curve on guitars, very similar bass tone design, but different amount of boost and stuff. I didnt do as well on my room / snare / overhead sound, should have cleaned up more bass in the room and compressed a little less aggressively. Amazing song and energy though

@Charlyfromthenuclearcity Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's really weird ! I was thinking that : 1 - since its a live performance maybe someone bumped into a overhead mic stand 2 - maybe the positioning of the OH mics is so that the drummer's head or body can get in the way of the mic and change their response There are a lot of weird stuff in this recording (the shifting OHs, the weird second kick drum, the preamp saturation on the guitar mics...). But that's what make it a cool challenge! :)

Thanks for the tutorial! I'm surprised to see you're not gating the snare at all. I had a really hard time with that, basically had to go and manually trim the track for each hit, and then copy/paste some of the good hits over the ones that had too much bleed from the china. It was a pain but it allowed me to compress the s**t out of it and add a generous amount of reverb for that B I G sound.

@@KohleAudioKult I agree on that point (there are many great entries that sound very different already), my issue is that you show some great ways of solving some of the problems in the mix that people may have missed (the kick being the most obvious example), and some simple things like the hats that add that extra 1% here and there. Don't get me wrong, this is an amazing competition with probably the most generous prize packages I've ever seen so I'm feeling like a bit of a chump even raising this, and anyone needing help at this stage probably isn't going to win something at this level. But it kind of feels like giving out some of the exam answers after some people have already put their pens down no matter how smart they are.

Hi, fun video to watch. I am kinda doing the same thing from my music recorded back then and my drummer at the time also recorded with 2 kicks because he hated a double pedal, and like you the sounds were different enough to be noticeable when I finally started redoing the songs recently. I also discovered, and this is important, that his left leg didn't have quite as much power and the right, being that he started as a single kick player. His speed and timing was fine, but the power/velocity was maybe 1-2 dbs lower on the left when I was analyzing both kick tracks and once I heard it, I couldn't UNHEAR it. I mention this because there was something I couldn't put my finger on about them all these years and when I finally saw the actual waveforms, it made sense why. Like you, I didn't want to use a sample, but there really wasn't another way to fix it, so I, like the other guy who mentioned this in the comments, sampled the first kick and applied it to the 2nd kick. Fixed easy peasy....To me, this is where it's totally OK to do sample replacement because you are working with material that was recorded at a time/genre where everything was still very much uncharted in heavy music because it fixes the problem that was POSSIBLY caused by a very inexperienced engineer, or assistant engineer/intern who gets to use the studio on the weekends to record his buddies, because that 2nd kick drum sounds like a classic rookie mistake, overheads too. I know, I've been that guy. But, I would have the band record the same 1 minute clip each day (and detailed mic positions/measurements WRITTEN DOWN) just to make sure things were accurate and nothing got moved or bumped and if there were phase issues, they'd get caught and fixed....An ounce of prevention.......... Because of that, I never had much wasted time. Otherwise, they would've been caught and fixed before the final drum performance. It would be interesting to find out if ALL the songs suffered from the same issues with the kicks and overheads. That would resolve that question. When doing work of this kind, I feel it is important to try and find out as much as possible about the actual sessions and how they were conducted because there are probably going to be tons of issues and you need to know how the session was done so you can tackle those obstacles efficiently. Anyways, I found it a little odd that you went the way you did, being that, you already kinda did that to the snare, thus, kinda breaking the no samples thing... and then using the dreaded alesis D4 kick sample. Being from that scene and time period, most drummers I knew did that and it was to combat the crappy sound at shows and to cut thru a live mix better in a club with a terrible sound system, or an engineer who didn't know how to mix/record this style of music, which was just about everyone lol. Being that you already used a sample for the snare and a D4 kick sample, it wouldn't have been a big deal to use it on the 2nd kick. It's not altering the groove in a bad way, it's true to the original drum sound and vibe, nor does it alter the timing of the performance and at the same time sound more consistent and uniform. Sorry this is long and I'm not being critical, just wanting to understand the logic that went into doing that way. If you did the contest blind, you'd probably win your own prizes! That would be pretty funny lol....
@KohleAudioKult Жыл бұрын
All good mate! It's all about how you use samples. Using a snare sample from the original performance like I did here just blends perfectly natural. And using the D4 sample just makes this sounds more 90s. The D4 was THE goto device for kick and snare samples in the metal world back then.
@TheHouseofJunjun Жыл бұрын
@@KohleAudioKult Thanks for the reply. That was my point. Why not do the same thing to the 2nd kick drum by sampling from the "good sounding kick" instead of going through all the steps you did? Just seems like it would be a much simpler fix AND still be true to the original recording/sounds vs. all the plug ins and eq matching etc done to get it to sound closer to the first one. I feel it would've been totally fine to do so I totally get the D4 thing and was just having a chuckle since it brought back memories of 2 of my drummers using a D4 and DM5 for FOH when we played all around the NY/NJ area. Good times........Thanks again :)
