Fluorescent tubes are by far my favorite light source. Way more interesting than LEDs. Part of the reason why is because they fail in such interesting ways. Nothing beats a room full of these bad boys starting on preheat.

I noticed an eol flourescent tube when i was 5 yr old in my kitchen and i remember i told mum ''the light is chnging colours at the edge! Then it turned from normal to a disco light. Besides, i never actually throw away a dead tube as we know they are doing everything possible to make us use shitty LEDS! @@THEBULBHOME I like fluorescent tubes too, since ever. But I have to admit that the recent (2019) top brand LED lights (not China crap) give a very good light, at least for the 3000K and 4000K versions I have seen. They are better than the fluorescent bulbs. The disadvantage is that they blind more and they produce much more blue light, which seems to be proven to produce irreversible damages to the eye's retina (a French research). At least for the color temperature from 3000K and above. In my living room I have 2x36W 3000K Edison fluorescent tubelights, placed as indirect light, and they last since 10 years! They are even better than the Philips 3000K and they are powered by an electronic ballast with preheating. Too bad that the Edison has abandoned the production.

@@THEBULBHOME I have fluorescent tubes or lamps everywhere in my home too, but for the living room, bedroom and bathroom I use the warm white 3000°K tone, (standard color code 83) It is the most comfortable and brilliant color temperature for the indoors. Try it, if you found one. Not the 2700K (code 82, 827) of the common Warm White compact lamps. It is too much yellow/orange shifted. I like the "cool white" 4000K (code 84, 840) on the kitchen counter and on my working desk, but as a general room lighting it is not comfortable in a home. I don°t like the cool white 6000K (or anyway above 4000K) at all, in any room. It is too much blue shifted. The 3300K (code 833) may be even better than the 3000K, but could not found it until now.

@THEBULBHOME

Actually they are not: magnetic ballast like the ones used on preheat run the tubes at a 60 Hz (50 Hz in Europe) frequency rate, meaning that the bulb actually turns on and off 60 times per second (you can see this taking a slo-mo video on a room illuminated by a old preheat fixture), so this diminishes the overall light output. On the other hand, electronic ballasts just like the one seeing on the video (which it's an instant start, but that is only the starting method) run bulbs at higher frequencies (more than 1,000+ Hz, depending on the model), so in return, maximizes light output as reduces the bulb turning off with each nominal pulse!

Phillips ALTO are Low Mercury Bulbs. However they are horrible bulb because they could dim out later. You should buy G.E. or Sylvania bulbs. They work very good and long lasting.
@THEBULBHOME
@THEBULBHOME 3 жыл бұрын
Actually Philips made often have better CRI as the phosphor coating is thinker. The bulb you see on the video is made by OSRAM (Sylvania) and didn't last that long (6 years). Instead, the Philips ones are made in 2003! And have been burning in other location before I put them on my room! So no, they are not bad at all! The only thing could happen to low mercury lamps is mercury starvation, which is rare on F48T12 lamps! Mines are still going! And they has 17 years old!!!!! If you don't call that quality, then I don't know why is quality. But, btw, I got this bulbs for replacement: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ_HkmWOmdCHntE
@jacobtennyson9213
@jacobtennyson9213 3 жыл бұрын
I have tested out Phillips ALTO bulbs that still worse. they dim out faster before they burn out. They are rip-offs. G.E. and Sylvania bulbs are vary good lasting bulbs. They do not dim out before they burn out.

Westinghouse fluorescent bulbs ( Especially the High Outputs) back then when I tested them are excellent energy efficient. You can rapidly switch them on and off and it ever dim and pop out burn out faster.
@jacobtennyson9213
@jacobtennyson9213 3 жыл бұрын
Westinghouse High Output fluorescent bulbs can indicate in the final phase to dim burn out phases when both tungsten filaments gets dark blue in both ends. But those bulbs keep on lighting up until on of the filaments blew out. They are very long lasting bulbs up to 6 years or more.

Don't know why but running them in preheat seems to last longer..
@THEBULBHOME
@THEBULBHOME 5 жыл бұрын
Since they are single-pin, you cannot run them on preheat, but they will last longer on preheat for sure! Why? Because is less stress on the electrodes at time of turning power on. On Instant-Start fixtures, the ballast sends a high-powered high-voltage high-frequency spike in order to breake down the resistive mercury column that exist on a cold lamp. This scatters the electrodes more easily than preheat'em until they are ready to strike an arc. Hope I solve your question!
@TanJianWei
@TanJianWei 5 жыл бұрын
@@THEBULBHOME exactly. That's why my home bulbs were electronic start but is bi-pin and preheat on each ends (2 contacts) thus I converted all the fixtures to preheat and it lasts wayyyy longer. One of my daily use lamps are more then 10 years old!

@@THEBULBHOMEthe only real advantage of instant start lamps that I can see is saving 1 to 2 watts per tube unlike a rapid start ballast that keeps the filaments heated by the low volt winding, at least with the old school magnetic rapid start ballasts, I think the newer electronic rapid start ballast shuts off the cathode heating once the lamps have started. Having said that, instant start lamps are best used in a commercial setting where the lamps are expected to run continuously for several hours or longer between starts and that's why 72 and 96 inch is the most common slimline sizes, while the 24, 36, 48 and 60 inch slimlines are rare. At least here in the USA not sure about other countries.
