Hope you guys enjoyed the video! Do ug agree with my thoughts on Hollywood and film school? I've been building my own film school (i know, very ironic) on Patreon for several months now, but it's only $4, not the $50,000 you'd pay to go to NYU. I post everything that I've learned related to storytelling there, it's like an archive of my filmmaking journey so if you're interested in any of that consider checking it out! www.patreon.com/RyanNg

As someone who went to film school and has been freelancing in the industry for some years now, there's a lot I could say about what you're touching upon. But to put it briefly, I think that people expect far too much out of film school. They want to be filming every week, make award-winning shorts, and blow their professor's minds. Those things may happen, but I felt it was much more about understanding the landscape and language of cinema, playing around with it, understanding the fundamentals of storytelling, what it's truly rooted in, how to use it convey something honest, and meeting like minded, passionate people along the way. That, and if you go to film school right after high school as most do, it's simply about maturing, taking full responsibility of your own life, and beginning to try to live the artist's life in balanced way. In short, film school helps you build the foundation for a lifetime of filmmaking, storytelling, and exploration, as opposed to propelling you straight into the industry as its next hotshot director. Nevertheless, I very much respect how you've forged your own path, and given how talented you are, I wouldn't be surprised if we cross paths one day (especially since I'm also based in Jersey).

Agreed, all the things I spoke about in the video was what I learned in college the 2 years I was there. I would have never connected the dots if it weren't for the film history classes i took in film school. But I still think that film school should encourage students to create more than they are now. The only way you can develop as a storyteller, the only way that you can explore is to make films. You can study as much as you can, but all those things are useless if you're not applying them.

You said 1 line in this video that made me so mad, "I guarantee that there is a young Spielberg on KZbin." The problem with this line is that you are the young Spielberg, you're out here making videos in your bedroom, and you have the ability to create entertainment and deliver messages that million dollar studios could never replicate. Realize your impact. You have 111K subscribers. You are teaching the new generation and the old what is coming and what has happened. Your story telling capabilities are beyond imagination. I'm to be completely honest with you, some of your videos suck. I force myself to watch them, but they are getting better and better, and more often I'm not forcing myself but just enjoying the video. I love you and your movies. i’m in film school and i would say write, film, direct outside of class. do as much as you can. let the school be a backbone to your career not your career the successful alumni are those that either have mega connections or those that worked their ass off to create those connections a school isn’t just going to hand you your career. you’ve gotta put in the effort to utilize what they can provide you in the classroom and on campus going to film school has so many pros outside of filmmaking, too because you’re a college student and can do college things

I 100% agree that KZbin is the future for filmmaking. I just worry what that means for movies in general: If the prestige and glamour and exclusivity and money and theatrical distribution are taken away from movies, (which is great and gives more power to the creator), what even is a movie? Is it just a long video? It seems like movies will begin to blend together with regular KZbin content, and compete on a platform where attention span is everything to the audience. It’s a little concerning, but exciting all the same!
@kylefarmer93052 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right that the film industry is in need of a migration but absolutely wrong that the answer is KZbin. For some reason, our generation (myself included) were brainwashed with this false sense of artistic hope that we could break the rules making our own art and all become famous. This is the Casey Neistat era. I believed he was superman, so much so that I almost turned down the opportunity to go to film school because I thought I "knew better" and "didn't need college". I just graduated this weekend and I could not be more certain that it was the right decision. If you want to make content, KZbin is fine. But if you want to make art, if you want to truly influence culture (beyond the superficial term "influencer"), if you want to be a part of history, you have to start at the bottom because you have to learn. We suffer from the false notion that the abundance of information available is equivalent to retained knowledge. It's really the opposite. Don't let your ego get in the way of an education.

My reason for hoping to go to film school is the hope I’ll find other people like me who want to change how we’ve been making films these past few years. Look back at the past, learn what resonates and calls to an audience. The “Dirty Dozen” did the same thing and I still believe that we can do that today. I know for a fact there are other people aspiring to be film makers who’re sick of the industry, I’ve met them already and I don’t doubt that with time we can revive this slowly aging industry a second time.

This video really resonated with me. I love making films, so I've considered going to film school. But I hate the Hollywood industry. Its filled with outdated "rules" and methods, and stupid notions that a movie isn't real unless it costs a ton of money. So I've been in a sort of weird place where I don't know what path to take. I just want to make KZbin videos and see where that takes me, but I have people telling me I need to go to college or else I won't be successful. After watching this video I realize that maybe I am on the right track, and I just need to keep going. Thanks for helping me realize that. :)
@RyanNgFilms2 жыл бұрын
You don't need to go to college to be successful, especially if what you want to be is a filmmaker/creator. If your family can afford it, it is a free 4 year vacation for you though 😂. Also you don't even have to focus on school work, just make KZbin videos in your dorm room and pay attention to the classes that you have genuine interest in. Then you get the best of both world lol, happy parents and you're investing in the future with KZbin. Idk that's just one way to go about it.

@@RyanNgFilms I think you are correct about Netflix but not necessarily the film industry as a whole. Especially if you consider the add industry (I know that's not the same as making movies but a lot of the same jobs apply). The film industry seems to be, at minimum, staying pretty stable (atleast for now). I hope the studio system breaks again though. If you look at the yearly growing of movies there very high right now and don't seem to represent your decline point of view. The only reason platforms like KZbin work at all is because of the add industry which indirectly helps make a bunch of jobs which are similar or the same as jobs you would have in the film industry, meaning theirs always a supply and demand=healthiness for everyone including the film industry.

as someone who dropped out of film school i agree with a lot of this but also the most important part is that film school is literally just paying to pretend you're a filmmaker for 4 years. you're pretending that you're a director, editor etc etc. you'd be better off starting to PA for productions near you and that way you'll learn way more and instead of paying you make money. and ANYONE can make a movie and submit to festivals. connects and understanding of the current industry is 1000x more important than any theory or bs a film school tries to tell you you need to know

i love your channel. i’m at penn state film school. my younger brother will also be attending penn state film school in the fall. film school is a certification for something many people can already do, and often do better. people who attend film school may be attending it because their parents want them to go to college and they seem to have no other interests. at penn state the film major is in the college of communications which makes sense. i took a year off before attending because of the pandemic and heavily considered not going at all. i could explain all of that here, but in summary i came to this conclusion: my parents are paying for me to live away from home, even if a degree is “useless” everyone agrees that a degree is better than no degree and not living with your parents is good in a vacuum of every other factor. the problem is with cost and return on investment. if i had to self fund school i would never go. if i was taking on a decent amount of debt i would never go. there are ways to make it without a degree for sure, but a degree convicted employers that you are taking this seriously enough to put money into it, which says a lot. you can learn everything on youtube sure, but good luck telling that to an employer. what’s changed for the better is a place like youtube doesn’t look at your resume, you just upload and show your skills. in the future i think our generation will be more willing to try out someone who only has a good reel. what really changed my mind was when i went looking for jobs in general. jobs that required a BA in film or communications in my area and paid 50-70k full time, even if it wasn’t purely film or movies it was content creation and creative work which was good enough. some didn’t even need you to finish. some just wanted to see you graduated college at all, and that’s why i’m currently in film school. it gives me options. if you plan to go you have to apply yourself, get on set, talk to people, join clubs and be exciting and fun to be around. even if you only go for a year that could be enough to inch in. as a freshman at penn state i knew i didn’t want to waste time. i was apathetic about going as it is, and the dorm life didn’t appeal to me. i wasn’t here to drink or party or hookup so i was here to get a job. to intern while stuff is paid for by my parents. i applied for an internship as a live video production for penn state sports and got it. the alumni held a 2 day commercial shoot for skittles and a home security system. i did that too. i got to direct a student run short film for a film festival. no one had the guts to sign up to be a director so i got it as a freshman. i managed a team of older students around 8-10 people in total. editor, writer, DP, 2 actors, audio. it was a legit accomplishment, and our film was shown in a nearby theatre. all of this is now on my resume. i am working full time at a photography studio (as a freshman right now over the summer) and when my contract ends with the photo season in a week i will be a film instructor at a summer camp for high school and middle school kids for $25 an hour. all as a freshman. this isn’t like other professions where you have to wait to begin working, it starts immediately. get a resume looked at or google a format, put anything, make a reel, make a cover letter, look on indeed in your area. small places looking for inexperienced people exist everywhere and being that you are young they won’t have to pay you much. i would NEVER be where i am without the year of a place saying i’m in film school. even if i don’t graduate i have now a full resume of film related work. arguably this is the greatest investment into a career ever, but only because i took advantage of every resource, got my resume and cover letter looked at by a professional as a freshman, went looking for full and part time jobs at age 19, joined every film club and went to the internship office as a freshman, and worked hard (in combination with the penn state brand) to make it happen. there are many people that go to film school and expect to graduate with a job. remember that this is a trade, not a study. YOU MUST GRADUATE WITH A REEL OF YOUR WORK OR PROJECTS YOU CONTRIBUTED TO. that’s the whole point of film school. those things require gear and film people (and actors) which require a place like film school where gear is free and people willing to work for free or for super cheap. actors too. i am not here to study film, but to pass classes while interning and working part time to graduate with a complete resume which is what the industry wants. i may end up making content on my own like you ryan, but it won’t be financially sustainable for a few years at least. i am also about to start a youtube channel, and am working on my first debut this month with my brother. this channel no doubt inspired me. i bought that book you recommended about the secrets of youtube and so far i knew everything which is good. the future may well be in content creation over film, but either way, video is what is constant. we are similar ages ryan (and probably the audience of this video) and my brother is only a year below me. we will definitely be seeing each other in the future, along with heyxnatalie and the valspire family. we are the 18-21 year old filmmakers and content creators of the future. there’s no doubt in my mind that our generation will shake things up and make things that no one has seen. phenomenal video as always. i will go back and put my youtube channel name and handle when i make it. this is my unofficial account. i’ll also put my non student email below if you ever want to collab on a project or are ever near the east coast, virginia or pennsylvania/D.C area. my brother and i would love to help out. let’s start building the network. w1shyolo@gmail.com

I felt like I was sitting in a history class, except I actually understood and learned something, haha, it's such a cool video. I've had this thought for a while but I've realized that all sources of our global issues or anything that affects us all come down to money. NYU doesn't care about the fact that you could potentially become a huge outselling director working in Hollywood one day, what they care about is feeding students with this idea when there really isn't any concrete reality to it and then making you pay thousands of dollars for it. I find it quite sad many of us fall into that trap and end up not filling fulfilled. The people in this world who pursue untraditional paths will always go through challenges where somehow we feel alone on this wild journey to hopeful success and conquering those lifetime goals. but these challenges will make us stronger, and better in the long run, I'm trying to understand that myself. I wish you all the best, there is seriously nothing like this on youtube and I don't always have the time to watch a full video on the platform but I drop everything for your content because it's just so good and you deserve so much more credit for it but I know it's only a matter of time.

This was really interesting and educational at the same time, I really do wonder what's coming in terms of how the film "industry" will be changing in the next few years. I think the "next Steve Spielberg" on KZbin if I had to choose is Joel Haver. Around one or two years ago he had a very small audience but he relentlessly posted short sketches as well as long feature films he made on his own for years, now he's thriving and still making some great stuff, I recommend his movie Pretend That You Love Me it's on KZbin and it's an absolute masterpiece, it's very touching and human, and at the same time so awkward and real. I also think you and the rest of the members of the Wholesome House are creating your own "industry" (or perhaps movement is a better word), something completely new that's never been here on the internet before, something just plain wholesome.

First, great video. I don't think being a KZbinr will ever supplant being a Hollywood auteur, even amongst Gen Z. What I WILL say is that the next Spielberg, Tarantino or whoever will be greatly influenced by KZbinrs/Influencers. For anyone up to 30 years old, it's just ingrained in our psyche. I also agree that the next generation of auteurs will largely come from outside the Hollywood system. But you still need the Hollywood system for that legitimacy. It's the difference between Sydney Sweeney and Emma Chamberlain. Jacob Sartorius and Timothee Chalamet. Both famous, both financially privileged, but you'd be lying to say there's no difference in connotation between the two.

Not Patti z 😭 I feel this so hard. I wanted to drop out so bad during Spring 2021, and I didn’t, but I still feel like each class im taking is pointless. I got into the wrong major, and I feel like I’m wasting my time, but the creative energy required for my major’s courses don’t allow for me to pursue the creative projects that I want to do… Thank go for Prof Rappa though. He let me do a video essay in CP2 instead of a “traditional” short film, and I’m gonna do the same thing in and independent study and then thesis with him for the next 2 semesters. That was and is a miracle though, and it took until my junior year for me to finally feel like I was getting something out of my education that I’m throwing money at. I can’t NOT recommend film school enough lol. It’s for some… but it feels so inherently competitive and toxic. So many of the people are just unbearable. Not to mention how absurdly fucking expensive it is. A SINGLE credit at IC costs over a thousand dollars, so good luck trying to enroll part time. Keep making videos man
@TenzinNamgyel2 жыл бұрын
@@zaradox i also went to IC and personally had a great time at film school. it’s definitely not for everyone, and it is pretty competitive, though i believe you’d find the same environment in any results major. i’ve met some amazing people and have made some amazing connections down the line that have led me to LA, where i currently work.
@EmeraldEyeProductions2 жыл бұрын
Yeah like Tenzin said-it’s definitely not for everyone, but also very much for certain people. But, at least still at IC, it kinda caters to a certain type of filmmaker, albeit unintentionally. It’s just kinda how it is-people who really know their shit and are very individualistic (not that they’re not collaborative, but at the end of the day are focused on succeeding for themselves) sorta takeover production classes and leave those who pay money to… learn, in the dust. You really have to assert yourself into the conversation, and if that doesn’t come naturally to you, it’s either not for you or it’s a skill you’ll have to learn. Also tho, I went into film school cuz I didn’t really know what else to do. I knew I wanted to edit trailers for a living, and figured that film school would be the next best thing since it’d be connected to the industry. I have since found out tho that while it’s ironically probably the best school for me at IC, I still kinda hate it 😂 I’ve made good friends here finally, but any major you enroll in will just have very focused classes… because that’s the nature of a major, especially a film major. And if you’re not passionate about making films in one way or another, such as myself, it’s probably not going to be enjoyable. I think film school is best for the connections (and college in general, for friendships). But if you’re not 100% about what you want to do, and you’re not dead set on breaking into the “traditional” film industry and think that maybe you want to do something more social media based, go to community college for the first couple years at least lol. You’ll save stupid money

@@TenzinNamgyel OH SHIT! Congrats on the job dude. Excited to see you guys all graduate, that's so exciting. I agree with you, I actually think you should only go to film school if your fam can afford it. If you have to take out loans I'm not sure that it's worth it. But I do think that if you want to learn how to tell good stories at a fast pace, making weekly videos on KZbin is much better for that. Also much more practical.

Great video! I thought you made an interesting observation about how as time goes on, filmmaking becomes more accessible for everyone, rendering the more traditional paths to being a filmmaker, like attending film school, more obsolete. Also, I liked a lot of the technical aspects of this vid, there were a lot of nice details in the editing, like how you used different era's of music to reflect the era of filmmaking that was being discussed.

Another banger bro!🔥👊...one gripe: this does seem to have been aimed at a certain kind of creative person. But there are some who do really want to be "below-the-line" workers (art directors, key grips, sound designers, etc.) where you can indeed get access to working with grip equipment and such at certain schools. You can certainly do without it but depending where you go and who you are, I don't think it hurts. Also, US film schools are extremely expensive but looking at other countries were post-secondary is covered, it might not be such a bad idea. I dropped out of film school but went back to a community college for a short 2-year hands-on TV program. Now I'm working a pretty fun job as an editor. TL;DR I think it comes down to self-awareness about what you want, who you are, and why you want those things. Adjust accordingly.

Quoting Scorsese in the end is just really out of context. I think you should check his standpoint on blockbusters/ superhero movies. That's not cinema for him and KZbin is definitly not cinema too.

Framing that Hollywood is dying is just... strange. With over 500 scripted shows being produced per year - these, in many ways, are boom times. And that's counting the downturn of subscriptions on streaming services. As someone who went to Tisch, I have some specific thoughts on film schools and what a person wants out of it. If you go to a renowned school, such as Tisch or USC (or CalArts, even), you're getting something more than just a degree. You're getting the name. And that name (along with the alumni of those schools) helps you get into the studio door. And at the end of the day, getting your foot in the door is all that matters. If you just want to learn the technical aspects of movie making, then most any film school will give you a solid foundation. From there, it's all about your hustle, your ability to network and your talent.

All my life I’ve wanted to make and write and be in movies. I’ve put my all into it. My parents promised me a college fund to help pay and I rode that until college time came. My parents divorced and my dad spent all the money on a trailer because he’s a compulsive buyer. The colleges I got into were far too expensive and moving out is no longer an option. It sucks and I feel like I may not have a shot to make movies but I’m going to try my hardest and keep creating and learning on my other channel.
