Thank you Eric and Lee from the land where Porsche comes from! Have been listening to this channel on the other side of the Atlantic for some time now. Such an interesting range of stories you have on your show, Eric. You are always prepared in detail and such a good interviewer. All your guests are so knowledgeable and kind to share their knowledge. It's a real joy to listen. And since I'd been a Jimmy fan throughout my teenage years I'm now super excited to listen to this!

52:10 As a huge Jimmy fan, I must admit that this paints Turnipseed in a terrible light. Jimmy was in a silver car that was impossible to see in the light of day on the horizon. He, according to his family, never got over what was a legitimate act of God that all of us still feel to this day. He didn’t speak of this because it was an unfortunate event that affected his life for the rest of his life. Respectfully, I don’t believe that Mr. Turnipseed and his family deserve that scarlet letter. There are a few things in this interview that are based in lore that have since been cleared including the long held belief that he was speeding at the moment of the accident. He had been speeding at at least one point of the trip, but according to the wreckage, the position of his body, and the speed of Turnipseed, he was actually not speeding. Secondly, there was an inquest that deemed this an accidental death with no criminal intent finding Mr. Turnipseed not guilty of any contributory wrongdoing in Jimmy’s death based on testimony by the California Highway Patrol and witness testimony. Thirdly, Jimmy was an experienced race car driver. People tend to think that all lovers of fast cars are foolish drivers and that’s not at all the case. It’s quite the opposite. You learn to properly handle speed with your own vehicle, especially around others that do not know how to take proper care on the road. Hence why he had made the call that he made with his actions to attempt to round Turnipseed once he realized that he wasn’t spotted. And finally, he and Newman were NOT jealous of each other. Jimmy was an artist that loved surrounding himself in the company of better and smarter people than he believed himself to be. (Sources: Eartha Kitt, Maila “Vampira” Nurmi, and his own cousin Marcus.) Jimmy and Paul indeed went out for a lot of the same roles, and Jimmy secured them all but that in The Silver Chalice and neither one wanted it 😂 (Source: Paul Newman himself in the amazing documentary of his life titled “The Last Movie Stars.”) Side note: Jimmy didn’t have front teeth. His front teeth were dentures, he lost them in high school in an athletic accident. (Source: Liz Sheridan’s book ‘Jimmy and Me.’) She was the infamous “Dizzy.” For those of us that love Jimmy, we ALL know of Dizzy. Her stories in this book about their relationship are wonderful. RIP Dizzy.

Would love to have heard him tell the Mercedes McCambridge story of her seeing the wrecked car purely by chance.

According to her interview, she saw Jimmy and then followed him to the car to say hello. That was when she learned it was his car. She was convinced it was his ghost.

Not a porsche fan, but very interesting interview, always thought it was to bad James Dean died so young in a car crash. I had been interested in the post wwll race car driver's who had lost their fear of death due to the horror of war. I always thought it took to long to make racing safer back then, and a lot of guy's who survived the war didn't survive the race world. Sometimes people do get premonitions, i have had many, knew my dad was gonna die, and within two week's he died. I listen to my gut, because i feel like it's the Holy Spirit guiding me, and the number of thing's I've seen and known aren't coincidences. I guess Dean should have listened to the guy who said he was gonna die in a wreck, but he didn't, so life just keeps evolving. G-d bless.

I apologize for asking this question a second time, but I neglected to retain the original answer. Can you tell me please the name of your fantastic piano intro piece and who played it? Thanks.

Minor point: The author uses the expression “fashion center” a couple of times as to how Dean liked to dress. The correct term is fashion plate.

In motorcycle terms, James Dean went from a beginner 250cc bike to a 1000cc super bike. He didn't have the experience or maturity to handle that car.
