He did in fact repay zaid ibn haritha. He sent him to lead in the ghawzat mut'ah. Interestingly in doing so he made a provision that should zaid fall in battle, then leadership should fall to Ja'far ibn ali talib and should Ja'far fall then abd'ullah ibn rawala should lead the men. Very perceptive that he planned for this and as anticipated it turned out all three of them fell. Mohammed accompanied the 3000 men part of the way then left them to face a byzantine army of 10,000 (exaggerated to be up to 200,000). He cried when he heard of zaid's demise. I dont know if it was anything to do with him sending an inexperienced young man to lead a battle in which his side was outnumbered.
