Well, I would say they have their own style rich in Celtic and nord influences not to mention REM is one of their biggest inspirations. In fact, the guitarist from REM is on this album. I have been around world class musicians my whole life and these guys are amazing!!! Maybe it just doesn't suit your tastes.

Meloy said the song was about miners and workers rights. So I imagine it's about labor disputes, fighting and getting killed for simple basic things like limited work weeks, no child labor, the right to go on strike and not get arrested, etc. Not quite as dramatic as a war to make the world safe for democracy. It fits with the Decemberists style to tell a story from the perspective of the people in it. To them, this would've been important enough to justify the dramatic imagery.

The first time I heard this song was at Dollar General in a late afternoon. The lyrics along with the music video shout a powerful and important theme to me . During the Winter Uprising here in Wisconsin a few years ago, when our tea party governor began to lay waste to our culture, our social structure, and our state, as we marched week after week in the tens of thousands, it was not uncommon to hear a little patch of people here and there sing "When we die, we will die with our arms unbound. This is why, this is why we fight. Come hell." For me, this was the protest song of that time.
