i worked for IBC the company that owned Hostess. I worked on the bread side. And it was poor management period. Ever employee had ten dollars a week taken out of our pay checks for five years to try and pay off the first bankruptcy; and the higher ups were pocketing that money and also not paying into the pensions of the employees. And then they wanted us the take pay cuts. Also the President of IBC hired his son as the VP making over half as much as the President of IBC was and he knew nothing about the baking industry. They also owned Wonder Bread and Butternut Bread; made the bread for Wal-Mart, IGA, Shop n Save, and other grocery stores, Hardee's bread, and also Arby's bread. It wasn't because of unhealthy products.

@@dyk-fr4ns Oh you should tell the one who made this video about the pay cut you took because he just said the Bakers Union refused paycuts which led to Hostess closing it's business. In fact many people blame unions directly for the decline of Hostess too. It didn't help Hostess raised the prices of their products but made the cakes considerably smaller than they had.

The reason they failed is that THREE times, venture capital groups bought them, loaded up the debt, gave themselves bonuses, then sold the now-distressed asset. "Costs" where high because of the interest on the ever-increasing debt, not because of what the workers were paid. You'll note that they didn't reduce executive pay. Their product line is the same as ever, and they're doing fine, now, with ownership that actually cares about growing the business.

In 2004, the Baker's union did take a pay cut and under the agreement, management promised that they would modernize and become more efficient. So in 2012, they knew they would just have empty promises and decided not to accept the pay cut. That part of the story did not make it out because the Executives ran a big publicity campaign to put their story out there and blame the Union.

@@effend446 nobody is saying the unions were always right, but time and time again the executives and management take the easy way out of businesses while the workers usually takes the fall. Its all about trust in the end, the workers TRUST management to assess current market conditions, trends, and forecasts for the future. While management TRUST the workers to execute their plans based on facts and figures. But time and time again management takes the easy way out and breaks the trust of the workers. The unions are not infallible by any measure but if the company was ran properly and efficiently, they would have the same problem of running into the same brick wall of bad press, layoffs, and bankruptcy.

Always want to get paid more than you’re worth. Remember the old management also either retired or they simply moved on to something better. It’s easy for them to do because they get paid at their fair market value. The folks who were once in the Bakers Union. Where did they go? All those “unions” at Hostess are gone. Proof is in the pudding. Workers don’t need unions. They are paid their fair market value. If you don’t like what you’re earning then quit and find something better. Oh wait you can’t and you know it.

@John Almost like you are selecting the "healthy" version of junk food. Most 'healthy' alternatives have never been objectively healthier than the foods they replaced but they appeal to people that want to feel less guilty about it. Whole wheat sugary cereal removes the benefits of whole wheat over refined wheat when you dump a bunch of sugar in it. Real sugar and cream don't actually make a better product people just feel like they do. Otherwise the sugar versions of coke and pepsi would have been successful when they made that comeback a few years ago. Hostess didn't try and make versions of their snacks that appeared more healthy and lost to things with similar nutritional values but added whole grains and had pictures of trees on the box.

I started eating Hostess Products in the fifties. Their cupcakes and Twinkies were delicious. I ate a whole lot of their Sno-balls, too. They were moist and very tasty. I even ate them when I became an adult. Hostess apparently changed their recipes. I could care less about their lack of nutritional value. I didn't think people wanted their junk food to be healthy. I noticed that the taste in every product had changed for the worse, and the Twinkies were dry and tasted like cardboard. I finally quit buying them because they were not the delicious treats that I remembered from my childhood. Taste usually suffers when a company is sold to a different corporation. I no longer eat Marie Calenders frozen dinners and desserts because the taste is terrible. Jimmy Dean's sausage is another example of terrible food. What has happened to Snickers? They used to be full of peanuts. Now you're lucky if you get a tiny hint of a peanut. I stopped buying Curtiss candies. ButterFingers and Baby Ruth's aren't fit to eat. Nabisco Foods went to the dogs. As the saying goes, if it ain't broke-don't fix it. However, company executives are more concerned with profits and greed rather than providing a good product. CHANGE IS NOT ALWAYS GOOD.

I was one of the 18,000 laid off in 2012 at the historic Hostess/Wonder plant in downtown Ogden, UT I worked there from 2008 up until the shutdown in Nov, 2012 it was a very tough time, we not only lost are well paying jobs/401k but more importantly, us not as coworkers but us as a family. And to rub even more salt in the wounds, the city recently demolished our plant, it was such an iconic part of downtown Ogden. That smell of fresh bread once you reach 26th st. and even sooner. Same thing happened in Orlando! In fact since 2013, I haven't see a bag of Merita's bread! Why you ask? After Hostess bread brands were sold to Flowers Bread group, the former Hostess Bread brands like Wonder Bread were shifted from the Orlando bakery to the Flowers Brandenton FL Bakery, near Tampa. However they only made Wonder Bread and Meritas was replaced with Nature's Own branded bread. How nice! As for the old Orlando bread factory off Interstate 4, it was also demolished and now has become a truck selling dealership.
@davenwin1973
@davenwin1973 5 жыл бұрын
What I haven't liked since Flowers acquired the Wonder brand, that there's supply problems with the brand. In the midwest, they initially contracted Aunt Millies to make the brand. Now, they took over all the making of Wonder bread, and some store brand bread, and the shelves are always bare. The original Wonder plants made bread for Walmart, Meijer, Central Grocers (out of business in 2017), & Associated Wholesale Grocers. Under Flowers, in the midwest, I only know of them making bread for Walmart under the Great Value brand, but Aunt Millies took over the other store brands, and can keep up with demand in their small territory. Flowers can not keep up with demand, that when bread comes into stores, it disappears within 2 to 3 days. Flowers even closed their day old bread stores, because the grocery stores never had enough bread to supply their bread stores. They should have stuck with similar desserts like what the original Hostess company made, because I can find those products, but not Wonder bread or the store brands they make.
@caa1000
@caa1000 5 жыл бұрын
davenwin1973 See, one big... BIGGEST mistake ever, was that Flowers bakeries took the brands and still didn't wanted the Hostess bakeries plants, so the fate was sealed and most of the plants shut down and dismantled and the reason why, was that Flowers could simply shift the line into the "Nature's Own" belts and simply label it any brand name they have. The Walmart bread can be done by any bakery around the US and not necessarily a Flowers bakery. Same with Meijer and Kroger. I would get Wonder Bread in Florida so easy because the Bread is mostly done nearby in Tampa. All I would like to see and haven't seen in ages was Meritas Bread!
@davenwin1973
@davenwin1973 5 жыл бұрын
caa1000 I'm around Gary Indiana, and any bread from Flowers comes out of one of their Ohio bakeries. At least in the midwest, my local Walmart stores get their Great Value brand bread from them. So supplies are a problem. Glad that Aunt Millies took over the Meijer and AWG'S Best Choice brand bread. With AWG being a national distribution company, their bread products come from different bread companies. With Meijer currently a midwest retail store (like Walmart with groceries and general merchandise, but quality closer to Target ), their bread comes from 1 distributor, Aunt Millies (that can change once they enter Minnesota (already looking at Minneapolis) and eventually Pennsylvania, as Aunt Millies doesn't serve those 2 states.

Hostess also bought out a competitor in the NYC market area, Drake's, taking over their Wayne, NJ plant. I believe in the later versions of Hostess, production was consolidated in lower cost facilities, possibly without unions. In the last bankruptcy, that Wayne, NJ plant was shut down, it later became a distribution facility for FedEx Ground.

I worked for Hostess during the first bankruptcy and they took $500 a week from the Teamsters workers then several years later came back to try and take more. I blame the mismanagement at the top. We were working obscene hours using trucks that were barely road worthy. It was not a pleasant job at all getting up and to work by 4Am loading a truck getting on the road by 4:30 and to the first stop by 5. It was awful. Many companies these days that are route jobs will offer you a ride along day that you do for free to see if it is a good fit for you before you take the job. Had I been offered that day to see what I was getting into I would have declined it. All in all the management was taking from its core workers and taking all the money for themselves.

Lots of things changed their taste after "saturated fat" became a bad thing and the use of vegetable oil was used in place of other shortening like animal fat. The other possible reason is the use of cheaper sugars. Quite possibly the same recipe but with different equipment such as ovens, etc. the taste isn't what it used to be. Their chocolate products (Ho Ho's and Ding/King Dongs) seemed to be "off" for me too. The orange cupcakes are the ones I really noticed tasting different after 2012 as those were my favorites...

Personally, I blame management. The higher ups will always screw over and gut the low end worker before they dare to give up even 0.01. If kicking out the people making sure the product reaches the shelf, means they get to keep their bonuses and make big bucks they will. Corporations are not friends to the workers or the costumers, they're friends to themselves. I work for DG, if i was to meet our ceo and tell em "i've been here for 5 years, I'd like to get paid a little more so I could own a small home", do you think he'd care? Hell no, he'd laugh and tell me to get a real job or fire me for daring to speak to him. Corp owners and runners are scum

The old Hostess products were just as ridiculously expensive compared to Little Debbies. That is the obvious reason they couldn't make it. The unions tend to raise costs in a bunch of ways other than just the hourly wage. The references in the video to Hostess failures to modernize and automate are also linked to the unions. Doing these things would cost union jobs, so they just keep doing things the way they always did, and the competition can beat them on price every time.

I think i can answer that. Most other countries tend to have more lax food making laws regarding restaurants, so the cooks are able to cook the food in more appealing ways. For example, achieving a strong, crispy outside (that American KFCs seem to lack) requires re-frying fried chicken to increase the skin's rigidness which would add to the crunchiness, but that doesn't happen in USA fast food.

With a very thin profit margin it is VERY hard to pay high wages and invest in new machinery at the same time. Most companies simply don't have warehouses full of money like Scrooge McDuck. Once you get behind the profit curve it is very hard to turn it all around, especially if one of your major unions is unwilling to help out. Most schools of higher learning simply don't teach "real world" economics. They usually teach students the only way to produce a product for the masses AND keep the workers happy is for the Government to take over the company. Never mind the USSR tried that and after 80 years it fell apart. Just like animal species, companies will come and companies will go.

I worked for Hostess from 2003-2012 as a Route Sales Rep. We took cut after cut after cut after cut in salary/benefits. And they didn't pay into my pension for the final 9-12 months of the company. And I dispute the idea the Teamsters accepted the offer as I know drivers who never got a ballot. The company kept making claims they were going to modernize trucks/equipment and develop a new business model and it never happened. The company refused to even hear any suggestions from the Union that made more concessions, changed the model, modernized and even had our own financial backers. The company wouldn't even listen to them. I was working 55-65 hours a week(salary+commission so longer hours meant nothing in income for us) , in all weather in a 1982 delivery truck, making less than $50k. By FAR the lowest pay in the bread/confection industry. At the end I was working seven days a week. And yes, I delivered both bread and Hostess off the same truck, there were no union stipulations that prohibited it(as was the case in 99.9% of the branches), so you can reject that bullshit when an anti-union moron tries to make that claim. The union is 0.0000001% to blame for the downfall. The company had ZERO interest in sincere negotiations and wanted to bust the union from the beginning. And just to piss off the neocon assholes, because of the nature of how I lost my job. I got to go back to school for free. I got my degree without paying one dime, and collected unemployment for the entire three years(about 50% of my old salary). I was PAID to go to school for FREE. Now I am in a new career, making better money, fewer hours. But I still refuse to buy Hostess and will forever carry a grudge as a vast majority of my fellow 19,000 laid off workers did not have the luxury of taking advantage of the program and had to scramble to any blue collar/delivery job they could get. We were willing to take cuts and make concessions, but the company wanted us to work for what would have been around $12-14/hr. And I reject will great intensity that bullshit adage "Any job is better than no job"!! Certain jobs have a minimum fair and realistic base salary and there is no way that $12-14/hr was either fair or realistic. I would much rather let the company burn then whore out my life/labor for slave wages.
