@@TheMysteryDriver Yeah, but I've also had pizza at places that use good ingredients and had the pizza still taste like crap. Ability of the staff to actually cook matters a lot too. If you're ever at Hot Lips in Portland, for example, those guys have no idea how to make a goddamn plain-ass cheese pizza without *covering* it in air bubbles. It's a goddamn travesty. The bubbles mean large swathes of the pizza are empty, just air inside a fragile bread cave, no sauce or cheese. I stopped going there. Doesn't help that they skimp on the sauce. Sbarro failed because it's not exactly something fancy. Sure food court in a mall is not supposed to be Michellin star level dining but if people wanted Mcdonald's, they wouldn't go to a mall for that. Which is exactly why Mcdonald's/burgerking and other fast food do horrible at food courts in any mall but cheapest types. They didn't market themselves as fancy and was at Pizza hut tier in terms of quality. They would've done a lot better as corner stores near factories, warehouses, and university cafeteria.

It’s been six years since my local Sbarro closed down at my mall, so it’s hard for me to remember the taste. But to be honest, I think Sbarro is screwed. With pizza chains like MOD and Blaze, they can’t compete with taste. I think in order to survive they will need to make the pizzas fresh, like their competitors. The modern consumer is willing to wait a little longer for good tasting pizza. But to do this they will need to drop their entire business model. The company is outdated and I can’t see a turnaround being enough to save them.

I don't think the convenience business model is outdated. Look at Little Caesar's. It's been working fine for them. I think marketing is the answer for Sbarro. Besides the obvious being improving quality control, they need to put their brand out there and fight to attract people. Relying on dated word of mouth in the wake of increased competition isn't helping anymore. Also, take a middle approach between malls/airports and standalone restaurants: Open up in prominent outlet and strip malls. They tend to generate more traffic these days than traditional shopping malls. Airports are fine for them, but have a glass ceiling since people only go there for one purpose. They need more exposure.

I love Sbarro. Just had some! I think that it tastes better than a lot of the big chains like Pizza Hut, Dominos, and especially Papa Johns. As was said, everyone has their own tastes.
@ZMCarsandMore2 жыл бұрын
As an avid pizza maker, freshness is important for pizza. The longer the pizza is out of the oven, the less moisture the pizza (dough) retains. Then when you add a lamp to keep it warm, only accelerates the process. This affects the quality heavily. This is why Dominos and other large pizza chains are very strict on making sure the pizza reaches the customer as soon as possible.
@colviolet40662 жыл бұрын
For instance, at marcos pizza, we will make extra large pizzas and cut them into 6 slices to sell by the slice, we make that pizza around 11am or so give or take a half hour... and around 1pm, 2pm, or possibly 3pm.. we take it away cause it will resemble a dryed out cracker if we left it till 5pm If I remember correctly we sell slices for either 3 or 4 hours per day.

When we had an intermission we went to the food court to get something real to eat besides popcorn, and everything was closing down for the night. We would come home off the N train and walking home would pass by. And occasionally stop by. I remember Genaro , who was a big, sturdy man, would offer us tastes of different things. I can still remember his voice telling us to "Taste-a-please" . He was such a sweet man.Second thing, one of the news headlines byline captured my attention. Jonathan Stempel, which piqued my curiosity, since I worked years ago with a Jon Stempel in brokerage. Did a search and found out that he and two other brokers I had worked with are doing extremely well and are all within the same firm. So that was just a trip down memory lane.

I'm not against it! But the real question is how Chicago thin crust would compete (not the dumb deepdish argument,) thin crust in Chicago is better than New York, and the chains here like D'agostino's seem to like their high prices, instead of trying to destroy Domino's. Although I'd consider ordering Sbarro, if one was by me, too, so it just exposes how fickle pizza opinions can be.

When people say, "No one likes Sbarro's pizza," you have to remember who is saying this. If it's Millennials, it's because they have only eaten there in the last 10, 15, or even 20 years. Growing up in the 80's in Chicago, i was used to GREAT pizza. And when i went to the mall, i always went to the Sbarro, because it was as good as NY pizza, or any Chicago thin crust.

Sams Club charges $2.50 for a slice of pizza and a drink. Sbarro charges $7.00. That's the problem. It isn't $5 a slice of pizza. That slice costs them less than 50cents to make. Generally, restaurants charge 3x costs. Pizza is cheap to make, so a lot of them charge more, but 10x costs is too high. Either they had much higher production costs than any other places, or they are greedy.

My mall had a mom-and-pop pizza place on the second floor, then Sbarros moved in to the lower floor by the center entrance. I thought the food was over priced and crappy, but everyony thought they were up scale, high-brow or something. Couple years later the old pizza place shut down and sbarros remained. It stayed for a couple years, but by then you -never- saw anybody eating there. Its gone now, turned into a weird off-brand hippie store that sells bongs, crystals and Greatful Dead shirts.

I was driving on the interstate a couple years ago, and I saw a sign for Sbarro... I was like "OMG, I haven't had their pizza in so long! This is gonna be awesome!". So I stopped at the service plaza, and ordered 2 slices of arguably the worst New York style pizza that I have ever eaten, at the highest cost ever. I just will never eat there again. They took the pizza that was sitting in the display, threw it in a Subway looking oven microwave thing, and proceeded to burn the crap out of it. Nasty.

I grew up in NJ and only saw Sbarro in malls. I ate there only a few times. It wasn't bad, but definitely nothing special. There is NO WAY it could compete to the many great local pizza shops that are scattered throughout the state. Being tied to shopping malls just made their situation worse. It's easy to understand their downfall.
