I actually like Sbarro as a kid. It was the only pizza place in the mall, and like others have commented, the slices were huge. We also had one on my college campus - UNR - but this was several years ago. I’m not a pizza connoisseur, but I enjoyed it and idk if it’s the nostalgia or me actually liking the pizza, but I crave it at times. Too bad the nearest one is about 20 miles out from me

The problem wasn't the pizza sitting out, because even if you got it fresh it wasn't good. Malls charge a lot for their space too, that's always been against them and keeping a slice cheap, which Sbarro couldn't.

@@TheMysteryDriver Yeah, but I've also had pizza at places that use good ingredients and had the pizza still taste like crap. Ability of the staff to actually cook matters a lot too. If you're ever at Hot Lips in Portland, for example, those guys have no idea how to make a goddamn plain-ass cheese pizza without *covering* it in air bubbles. It's a goddamn travesty. The bubbles mean large swathes of the pizza are empty, just air inside a fragile bread cave, no sauce or cheese. I stopped going there. Doesn't help that they skimp on the sauce. Anyway, what I'm saying is I'll take food made using less than stellar ingredients made by a really skilled cook than food made with the freshest, best-quality ingredients made by some dispassionate college kids working part time who aren't even bothered to learn to properly knead dough.

Sbarro failed because it's not exactly something fancy. Sure food court in a mall is not supposed to be Michellin star level dining but if people wanted Mcdonald's, they wouldn't go to a mall for that. Which is exactly why Mcdonald's/burgerking and other fast food do horrible at food courts in any mall but cheapest types. They didn't market themselves as fancy and was at Pizza hut tier in terms of quality. They would've done a lot better as corner stores near factories, warehouses, and university cafeteria.

What’s craziest about the decline of Sbarro is the number of restaurants that have tried to copy their model. There’s a place called “Slices” here in Seattle that does the exact same thing of leaving pre-cooked pizzas out all day and re-heating them when someone orders a slice. And they charge nearly $10 per slice. It’s ridiculous.

It’s been six years since my local Sbarro closed down at my mall, so it’s hard for me to remember the taste. But to be honest, I think Sbarro is screwed. With pizza chains like MOD and Blaze, they can’t compete with taste. I think in order to survive they will need to make the pizzas fresh, like their competitors. The modern consumer is willing to wait a little longer for good tasting pizza. But to do this they will need to drop their entire business model. The company is outdated and I can’t see a turnaround being enough to save them.

I don't think the convenience business model is outdated. Look at Little Caesar's. It's been working fine for them. I think marketing is the answer for Sbarro. Besides the obvious being improving quality control, they need to put their brand out there and fight to attract people. Relying on dated word of mouth in the wake of increased competition isn't helping anymore. Also, take a middle approach between malls/airports and standalone restaurants: Open up in prominent outlet and strip malls. They tend to generate more traffic these days than traditional shopping malls. Airports are fine for them, but have a glass ceiling since people only go there for one purpose. They need more exposure.

Or people that are with a group of friends eating at the food court and Sbarro was their best option.

@@cancel1913 Right, they should cut their menu way down and only sell pepperoni and cheese pizza. Not only do they save money be eliminating waste, the pizza will be fresher. NYC is full of pizza by the slice places that are delicious - the fact that it's premade isn't Sbarro's problem. Secondly, they should pop slices into the oven for a few mins if it isn't just out of the oven (if they don't already). This is what NYC slice places do.

As an avid pizza maker, freshness is important for pizza. The longer the pizza is out of the oven, the less moisture the pizza (dough) retains. This is why Dominos and other large pizza chains are very strict on making sure the pizza reaches the customer as soon as possible.

I grew up with one of the son’s kids (so Gennaro‘s grandchildren). The mom was actually pretty nice, but the rest of the family members were some of the most entitled people I have ever met. The youngest kid was particularly awful, even into our late teens/early 20’s. It’s been about 5 years since I’ve seen him though. I hope he’s grown out of it.

When I worked at a clothing store in the mall during college, Sbarro was a haven. We had a mall employee discount, stamp cards and really friendly employees who remembered what you liked. I honestly didn't think the pizza was bad, and the sides were pretty darn good too, especially their potatoes with ranch dip...One time my friends and I went to the movie theater at the mall for a back-to-back viewing of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy extended version + director commentary, a 12 or so hour endeavor. When we had an intermission we went to the food court to get something real to eat besides popcorn, and everything was closing down for the night. The Sbarro employees gave us their leftover pizza for free and we were so grateful. I might be biased since I was a fellow mall worker at the time, or just lucky, but I always had good experiences with Sbarro.

Two things: first when my husband and I first got married back in 1985, we lived right by where Sbarro's originated in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. On 65th Street and 17th Avenue. We would come home off the N train and walking home would pass by. And occasionally stop by. I remember Genaro , who was a big, sturdy man, would offer us tastes of different things. I can still remember his voice telling us to "Taste-a-please" . He was such a sweet man.Second thing, one of the news headlines byline captured my attention. Jonathan Stempel, which piqued my curiosity, since I worked years ago with a Jon Stempel in brokerage. Did a search and found out that he and two other brokers I had worked with are doing extremely well and are all within the same firm. So that was just a trip down memory lane.

@Sixgun Symphony It's amazing how "Sbarro as mall pizza" co-exists with stereotype of NY pizza being superior. All pizza in NY is kind of like Sbarro. I eat it! I ate it a lot when I lived there! I'm not against it! But the real question is how Chicago thin crust would compete (not the dumb deepdish argument,) thin crust in Chicago is better than New York, and the chains here like D'agostino's seem to like their high prices, instead of trying to destroy Domino's. Although I'd consider ordering Sbarro, if one was by me, too, so it just exposes how fickle pizza opinions can be.

Sams Club charges $2.50 for a slice of pizza and a drink. Sbarro charges $7.00. That's the problem. It isn't $5 a slice of pizza. That slice costs them less than 50cents to make. Generally, restaurants charge 3x costs. Pizza is cheap to make, so a lot of them charge more, but 10x costs is too high. Either they had much higher production costs than any other places, or they are greedy.

My mall had a mom-and-pop pizza place on the second floor, then Sbarros moved in to the lower floor by the center entrance. I thought the food was over priced and crappy, but everyony thought they were up scale, high-brow or something. Couple years later the old pizza place shut down and sbarros remained. It stayed for a couple years, but by then you -never- saw anybody eating there. Its gone now, turned into a weird off-brand hippie store that sells bongs, crystals and Greatful Dead shirts.

I loved Sbarro as a kid, so I thought it was just nostalgia that was the reason I liked it so much. But then, I found a Sbarro restaurant near my apartment, paid it a visit, and it was just as good as I remembered it. I respect that not everyone thinks this way, but that’s the beauty of life right there; there’s no definitive answer for what’s good or bad that everyone has to follow.

@@maddycarrillo3434 I ALWAYS got excited to go to the mall to get sabaro pizza. I loved it 12 years ago and I still do now! I guess we just have an unpopular opinion...Who cares lol

I loved sbarro’s when it was at the mall in my hometown, it closed around the time of the recession and I still miss being able to go there.

Sbarro also has many locations at rest stops, especially on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Ohio Turnpike.
