I recently started a full reread of One Piece. Partially inspired by you, I wanted to think a lot more about the themes. Turned out there were so many layers I missed, and I've been gaining new appreciation. But even so you're still surprising the hell out of me with the insights you bring. It never even occurred to me to think about the little hints we're given about Oden's character and what they add to the theme of leadership. Now that you've pointed it out, he reminds me of Vivi a lot, as well as Luffy, since all of them involve the theme of freedom vs. responsibility. And the entire idea of the passage of time was completely out of nowhere to me, yet it fits with everything. As was the loyalty and faith of the Scabbards compared to the Straw Hats. Shutenmaru's arc is fantastic. I was ready for you to talk about spirit, and Luffy's leadership to the prisoners, but how it connects to everything else is amazing. And man, I never thought about Luffy and Kaido's interaction on that level. Very excited to see how these themes progress, and to get to Wano in my reread and think about your points further. Do you think Reverie as an arc, including the post-Reverie interludes, has major themes worth talking about? I'm sure there are, but you're gonna notice them faster than I do.
@MrMorj5 жыл бұрын
Long time no talk man! Glad you liked the vid =) I personally see a bit of a loop between Vivi -> Luffy -> Momo that I'll talk about more one day if I do an alabasta arc vid (I'd have to reread to get a better idea)...but I remember Vivi's leadership was always inspiring for Luffy, and this was back when Luffy's leadership wasn't actually emphasized much (that really only started in EL as I recall). Basically Alabasta saga had Vivi who was already a great leader and coming into her own as a Queen, which was a bit of an inspiration to Luffy of what a great leader was. And now we have this coming kind of full circle in Wano (also centered around a rebellion in a great kingdom, only this time reversed + first time defeat shichibukai/first time defeat yonko parallels possibly) where we have Luffy who is now a great leader and coming into his own as a King, which is now serving as an inspiration to Momo of what a great leader is. All that def going in a vid sometime later as larger story stuff becomes more clear but man, Im happy you took away some new stuff from this vid, i promise when i make these connections its not all off the top of my head, a lot of these i made on rereading the arc and even during writing the video. i didnt think anything of ace/tama when i first read wano, i didnt remember the brook/laboon stuff till nearly the last draft of the script and went back and fit it in for example honestly, it all just comes down to taking notes. anytime i see something little that might be important i just add it to a thick ass document of one piece notes, and then over time it piles up and then i go back through and see lots of stuff that fits with other stuff. and then when I have these new connections in mind, if I go back and reread something from before then I see even more new connections. BOTTOMLINE: maybe i do notice stuff "faster" than you do, but its not magic! it's just because ive written down so many notes over time that connections become clearer and clearer, which means that im probably more likely to pick up on how something fits into past ideas than a lot of other readers. plus taking notes has made me get used to looking out for what lines or character traits seem important, and that applies to other series i like too =) but with regards to Reverie, idk i think for the most part it raised a lot of mysteries and new plot threads so id have to see how that actually pans out before going back and seeing thematic connections there. plus, overall it just felt more "hype" so i was mostly just excited reading it and didnt take many notes compared to wano which is more story-focused

man did a read through of all of one piece last year (originally started reading around marineford first time around) and u notice so many more things like u said, but still morj is just on another level with that stuff started watching the anime from the beginning some time ago and the crew just left for ennis lobby and hope itll all be just as enjoyable as reading everything from the beginning
@potentialPizza85 жыл бұрын
@@MrMorj Part of what I respect is the attention it takes just to take all those notes. I tried to do it a bit at the start of my reread, but I realized it had been so long since I'd read most of it, that I just wanted to read it for enjoyment. And taking notes makes rereading take so much more time and effort. I'm not sure if I have it in me to do a second reread right after the first just to take notes on things. I guess doing it one arc at a time is what makes that doable. For me the big thing that Vivi taught Luffy is the value of pacifism in some situations, so I'm wondering if we'll see that reflected in what Luffy shows Momo. It would also make sense for Luffy to teach Momo what he taught Vivi about the necessity of fighting sometimes. I suppose there are elements of Vivi's philosophy in what Luffy did with the prisoners as he chose to reason with them instead of fighting. Now I'm wondering if current Vivi stuff will play into it, considering that big things are ready to happen with her and Alabasta.
@MrMorj5 жыл бұрын
@@potentialPizza8 Honestly dude, the whole "note" thing when reading does turn it into a bit of a chore for me. Like I didn't use to do this before I made my OP channel, but now that I have the channel basically any time I'm rereading parts of One Piece, I know that any time I do see a connection then I either have to take a break to write it down, or just keep it in my head till I forget it. So now it's like I can't just plain enjoy the series, since that fucker Oda puts in so many small little things that I could accidentally notice and then have to write down. And I could just not write shit down, but because of the channel I have this little guilt in my head that's, "oh, that MIGHT be something important that MIGHT turn into a good point in a vid later, it's best to just write it down now before you forget". And what's worse is that now other series that I view as potential subjects for videos, I treat them the same way when reading through the first time. Like if you're caught up to Berserk I could give you a quick example of how thats made reading Berserk a pain. But I also remember a long while back you might have been talking to me about Jojo's? So a friend got me to start watching, and it's so much more enjoyable to just take the story as is and not try to write notes for it. However, I know that part 7 in the manga gets a lot of praise, so Ive decided at least for that one I'll do note taking, but for now Im happy I get to just enjoy a fun series without treating it like a project. And that's def a good point with Vivi and Luffy, and I agree you could see that a bit with Luffy and the prisoners for sure. Luffy could have just beaten the shit out of them, but a non violent display was more important to winning them over. Idk if I can see Luffy teaching Momo pacifism since I havent yet seen that between them, but going along with the Vivi-Luffy parallel it would make a lot of sense to come up later. Will see....

The difference I have noticed that certain KZbinrs can come out with 35-70 minute videos 'analysing' chapter when in fact it's a recap with slight event explanation. Meanwhile Morj has talked for 20 minut on Patreon Podcast about Luffy 's prison speech alone, which took like a couple of pages only. He brought up themes and what that event meant for the story, why it was significant. I do not want to sound bashing because other Tubers focus more on entertainment. And that is fine. @@bartiz12 to be fair, the views of someone looking at it from an entertainment standpoint and another looking at it from a philosophical standpoint are going to be vastly different. both are actually very important to stories. the entertainers actually are the ones who create the hype that accumulates to erupting point at the climax of the story. the philosophical ones are the ones that see page for page what the deeper meaning behind this means and in their own ways actually create a different kind of hype. I personally didn't even think of one piece in the way Morj-sensei was seeing it and this honestly makes me even more excited for round 2 of wano along with the rest of act 3 before it finally gathers up at act 4 where luffy finally ascends to his mantle as an emperor possible with others next to him like Kid (since they are obviously weaker) i feel that maybe kid is going to be the first conquror to have his spirit broken until he sees Luffy unbreaking and will instead take his broken pride, self esteem and spirit and reforge it into something as unbreaking as luffy's

Oda also mentioned along time ago that the Marinford arc was to be a more personalized story based on Luffy and his family and he felt that having the straw hats involved in such an arc, would take away the emotional impact and purpose of what that arc was trying to convey on a more personal level so he chose to not include the straw hat members at all.

How that ended up can also show that, even with Luffy's strong power, it still wasn't enough on his own, telling us the readers that, no matter how strong one man is (or is perceived to be), they still need a loyal crew by their side. It should be important to note that in Japanese Folktales one of the most important themes found in those stories is Loyalty to a leader or to parents, this happens in stories like Momotaro and the legend of Urashima Taro. We see this in Wano's arc with the Scabbards and The Strawhat crew, so thats interesting way to tie in Japanese storytelling themes into Wano. Another theme in those stories is actions that are for the good of the group, rather than the individual. This would create Harmony or "Wa", which is why Ancient Japan was called Wa because it represented the Harmony of groups.

I'm really impressed with Oda's approach on classism in Wano. Orochi is NOT a celestial dragon-like dude, or someone brought into this world with everything. He's the exact opposite! He's been attacked, persecuted, spit on, etc., throughout his childhood just because of the name he was born with. He may have even been someone we sympathized with if we read a story about his youth! As a consequence... Orochi's power grab and reign of terror comes from a very deep-rooted hatred, and I think that's really interesting. A member of the "lowest class" seizing power, and enacting revenge on everyone who made his life hell. The panel where the citizens had the "Oh Shit" moment after Oden's death was revelaed, and Orochi's disgusted look as he looked at the citizens and said "Silence, Trash" made me shiver. The citizens aren't in their current position simply because Orochi "doesn't care about them," which is typical with shounen villain-kings (Goa kingdom, for example), he fucking HATES them!! In a way, he demonstrates the worst that can come out of the lowest class where unjust systems exist. it's not a coincidence that the Reverie and Revolutionaries' plots are being moved forward in between Wano parts ;)
