Dark scenes are so much harder to make look good imo, you often see these realistic scenes with tons of lightning and often white bright textures for walls etc. Making good realistic textures from scratch is pretty hard though I have much to learn when it comes to that.

You can still tell it's CG, but only sometimes. We're actually getting to that point where you can play something that looks like real life, which from a tech demo standpoint, is really incredible. The only problem is U4 has limited scalability and can only handle a relatively small sandbox. With very high object count and high poly scenes it's difficult to achieve good MP performance. It's still impressive but with the trend towards open world game development the above limitations are a deal breaker imo.
@LukeReynoldsMusic_137 жыл бұрын
PUBG?
@fturla___1567 жыл бұрын
I think the idea is to use the Unreal 4 Game engine to create the game environment on a high powered work station then you need to scale down the graphics with compression and other mapping tricks in order to make the rendering tolerable on the lowest level computer you want the game to work on. The old way to do this was to have the analysis done of the rendering using only single threaded processing but it now can be done with more processing due to the availability of multicore CPUs. The rendering and mapping is easier when the background is non-interactive that's why so many games are linear but everyone wants the sandbox style of play so you need more systems with more power no matter how you make a game. I'm hoping the engine has addons for this purpose to scale down processing wherever is needed to keep the game smooth.

The lightening blew my mind! the way it bounces of surfaces and the deep realistic shadows...Makes me even doubt its really rendered in real time. Like look at the bike in the apartment. Why can you not move the bike? I would love to see those shadows change shape and move. Or is it rendered in real time? why cant we move things about? Is it really as amazing as they try to make us believe it is? Because as photorealistic this is, it is completely dead if you cannot interact with it. Thats the whole point of a game vs a photo/video right?
@anasgets1117 жыл бұрын
Static objects, shadows (of static objects) and the whole static lightning are baked, meaning they are calculated once and saved as somewhat image files that are wrapped into the 3D objects to be shown in real giving the illusion of photorealisim, so ONLY Movable objects and Dynamic lights (Volumetric lighting for ex.) are calculated at real-time this way saving lots of graphic power for other effects like Anti-Aliasing and such.
@luckieluuke1317 жыл бұрын
Thanks now i understand :) Thought it looked to good to be true. Nice graphics still. That maybe explains why (i think) the red futuristic scene dosnt look as "realistic" in the lightening....

Ever wondered why gameplay never looks as good as the trailers, or even the cut scenes? Because they don’t use game engines to render those.

I think people are drawn to UE4 simply because it has been designed to reduce technical knowledge for artist. The technical work isn't necessarily more difficult, it's just not as fun. That and the Epic community is one of the most supportive, which enables people to get more work done. As far as engine capability though, I don't think it's too much better than CryEngine. Honestly, people don't use CryEngine because it has a steep learning curve, and minimal support from both community and staff. However, the rendering engine in CE still blows away any other engine out there. Not only does it look better but out of the box it's way more optimized. In UE4 you have to bake all of your lighting if you want decent FPS. Forget dynamic lighting, you need a ton of RAM to do that. CE however can render dynamic lighting right out of the box with out the need for a ton of RAM or VRAM. That and it looks much better.
