I fucking love how Shangri-La Frontiers' big boss battle, Weathermon, feels explicitly designed as a video game boss fight, with clear attack patterns, desperation moves, and proper phases as well. Out of every anime fight I've seen, this is one that I specifically want to play instead of watch.

The fact that in his 2nd phase, the gang has no actual plan for how to fight his horse mount because in every previous fight it would combine with him and obliterate the raid party, so they cheese it by trapping the horse in its "bucking off" animation, feels so real it's painful. I still fondly remember a boss from Secret World I played years ago where the intended mechanic (sneaking past the guard patrols and killing the boss while disabling the alarms they would summon help with) was way harder than the solution players found, which was having a DPS run through all of the patrol routes, alerting everyone and leading them on a wild goose chase in circles while the rest of the group fought the boss.

I finally got around to watching Re:Zero not that long ago and the last thing I was expecting was for it to out of nowhere completely dethrone all of my favorite shows as swiftly as it did. No other anime has even come close to the "sit down, shut up, and listen" moment I had the night I first watched s1ep18.

It's funny. When I originally watched RE:Zero, I was unironically agreeing with Subaru early in the series. It was only after Emilia's argument after the duel that I realized that I wasn't watching some character in a power fantasy. I was watching myself at my worst, and that show actually helped me confront my own negative traits and move forward in life. In fact, I may watch it again, because I need those reality checks more often.
@dontmisunderstand60415 ай бұрын
As someone who genuinely doesn't understand how a person can like RE:Zero, I appreciate you sharing this. I got that Subaru being a fundamentally unlikable person was the point, but I figured that was probably just for the catharsis of the torture he endures on-screen. It also being an admonishment for people who relate to him is an angle I didn't think of, because I'm generally not used to people like Subaru tolerating any criticisms toward themselves. Thanks for your perspective.
@alexprus79535 ай бұрын
@@dontmisunderstand6041a character being unlikable, so they have room for growth, is a pretty common occurrence in media. It's just usually dedicated to supporting characters, like a tsundere love interest, or a villain-turned-ally. I feel like some people are too fixated on the main character being "the good guy" and react too harshly to any unlikable traits. I don't necessarily relate to Subaru and also don't really hate him, so all the torture he goes through didn't bring me much joy, but it was interesting seeing a flawed person forced to improve themselves.
@duskmare00005 ай бұрын
@@alexprus7953 Yeah but Subaru barely grows... If he grows at all honestly. An unapologetically bad guy as a main character is pretty fun, but they're treated like a bad guy. They make enemies, suffer consequences, etc. Subaru doesn't. Every character comes to like and respect him, despite him being a massive wad. It just ended up feeling really contrived to me. Like he was an author's self insert and that he was given the 'good character' rewards because the author genuinely believed he was good and wanted the other characters to reward that. The torture he goes though is mostly frustrating. Half the time the guy is just banging his head off the problems he faces like they're brick walls, and waiting for a loose brick to shift. He doesn't use any kind of problem solving skill to solve his problems. He never invests in learning new skills that will actually be useful in the situations he has to face. He just relies on other characters to save him, usually by some compounding coincidences on one of his many attempts. It's annoying seeing him go through the fail states so many times after he has everything he needs to solve the situation and yet still fails another 3 times. It just feels like the writers were dragging it out. Anyway, clearly just not a series for me. I actually liked most of the stuff in it, like the world building and the side characters. It's really just the main character and the way he Deus Ex Machina's his way through every situation with no skill or sense. Frustrating as hell.
@dontmisunderstand60415 ай бұрын
@@duskmare0000 In that sense, Re:Zero tries to have its cake and eat it too. Subaru does indulge in his greatest vices and flaws, time and again... but he never faces consequences for being a shitty person, because of the premise of the story. The version the people around him see is the curated version after countless iterations of the loop. It disturbs me more than a bit to know that literally every character with a positive relationship to Subaru only has a positive relationship with him because the loop removes the consequences of being the shitty person he is.
@duskmare00005 ай бұрын
@@dontmisunderstand6041 Yes and no. There are other examples where his shitty actions carry through the full story. Like when he makes a fool of himself in front of all the royal knights. Or when he has a master swordsman available to teach him and he just wails on the guy in impotent rage, which I seem to remember also makes it through. There are also just a number of character moments, like where he just fully said to Ren's face that he'd accept her love but that he'd use it to further his own goals of getting with Amelia, who he has just a constantly toxic obsession/relationship with. His achievements make it through the death checkpoints but the characters still see a lot of his shit and still just treat him like he's a hero. As I said too, even his achievements are rarely his. Like, the first encounter with the gutting woman he only ends up surviving because he happened to tell the champion of the knights where he was going, and they showed up to save him. Or against the devil hound in the forest where the girl goes half demon mode and saves him. Even in the iterations where he passes the challenge, he's still usually shown to be incompetent, petty and pathetic.

So I'm really happy that you put Re:Zero as number one, because it is not only the series that lead me to finding your channel, but it's a series that has actually helped me IRL. A couple years ago, I got diagnosed with Cluster B Personality Disorder. I score exceedingly high in all four of those disorders: Borderline, Narcissistic, Antisocial, and Histrionic. All my life, I have gone through a lot of really, really traumatic shit I don't want to get into here, but it's lead to failed relationships of all kinds left and right. I couldn't hold a job. I couldn't keep good friends for very long. My family basically discarded me. I have gone from one toxic romance to the next. I found Re:Zero from one of your "Season Anime to Watch" videos in my recommended feed and figured I'd give it a shot. Finished the first season, and then your first in-depth video came out. Second season, finished it, and you had another video. About that time, the relationship I was in went south in a very horrible way and I was crushed. I was thankfully already in therapy and had received my diagnosis, and in one of the sessions, my therapist said something similar to one of your videos. I rewatched them, rewatched the series, and...something just clicked. I could see what you saw in Subaru and in the flaws of his own perspective. How everything was a failure of his own making, and that only by confronting what was psychologically holding him back could he steadily unravel his problems and start building genuine, loving, fulfilling relationships. I took your words and the concepts of the story to heart and have been busting my ass every day to live them. I have dug deep into my past and into the awful traumas and memories I've long repressed. I've examined them, grieved them, and fought them. It hurt so much. Today, I have recently gotten a new job that I earned through holding down a similar one for over two years, something I've never accomplished before. I have a small cluster of really close friends who are rooting for me. I have a partner who is so loving and patient and calls me on my bullshit in a way that is positive and helpful instead of degrading and harmful. I am not "fixed," but the difference between now and only three years ago is staggering. Geoff, without your words at exactly the right time, I wouldn't be where I am today. I am so, so very thankful that you recommended Re:Zero, and I'm so thankful that your honest but powerful commentary videos found their way to me. Thank you.

Re Zero is probably the anime I have had the hardest time watching because of how hard Subaru and his struggles resonated with me. Seeing Subaru be gradually forced to confront the worst parts of himself and learn to understand , work with and respect the people around him was both difficult and inspiring. Difficult because I could definitely feel myself relating to Subaru, so watching him stumble forced me in turn to confront stuff I didn't like about myself. Inspiring, because Subaru's growth past his struggles made me feel like I could face and overcome my own 🙂

In that same note, I really appreciated that Subaru was just a normal kid who just felt like he couldn't raise up to the expectations that he had placed on himself and that he felt others had placed on him. He had loving parents and a normal life, he wasn't bullied nor was he in dire straits. He was just unexceptionably normal.There's no escapism or cheap development once he was spirited away either, Subaru had to earn and prove his existence through literal blood, sweat, and tears.

All Subaru was given was an ability that's extremely powerful but works in a way that only causes him pain and suffering, both a blessing and a curse. We don't know why he was given it yet, and there is an underlying mystery about what return by death is and why he was granted it or why he was even brought to the world, but none of those answers really matter to the story of who Subaru is and his growth as a person as he carves a place for himself and conquers his own shortcomings.

Re:Zero has to be one of the most beautifully made and written stories I’ve come across. It has taught me a lesson I don’t see many talking about. You see through the entire series how much Subaru cares for his companions to the point of putting himself and his mind through hell and one that follows him throughout. He doesn’t shrug off these deaths(as he shouldn’t because your body is programmed to want to survive) and constantly fights with not wanting to die and saving those he loves. At one point during the second season he meets someone that wanted him to cherish and value his life. After all wasn’t his life worth just as much as the people he was saving? Doesn’t he deserve to live too? This completely broke me as a man. I was in tears. Growing up where it’s romanticized to lay down your life and were to be protectors and providers. Everyone comes before us. I saw I never valued me. I never took care of my needs. I never valued myself even remotely close on the same level. Glad I saw this show because it honestly changed my life.

@@Lianpe98 yeah if you watched it in reverse and with switched off screen. the talking is always relevant to the story, the characters and the fact that they have to solve the mistery of who is the antagonist and what's she about, it's not a sequence of literal cafè static shots of people explaining the plot so that the show can't dodge the responsibility of showing it happening. Don't even try to put RE:Creators and SAO in the same phrase: one can be a bit slow at worst, the other is broken on all levels

@@Lianpe98 Hilariously I just binged the whole series after watching this video and enjoyed all the holes, dialogue and 'coffee table' scenes! But I can see why some people wouldn't enjoy it. For me, the series is hilariously and painfully relatable. Artist who gets no views? CHECK. Making stories with my own characters that go through tragedies for entertainment? CHECK. Having friends who are WAY better at art and writing than me and feeling jealous about it? CHECK. Feeling absolutely crushed that my story and art will never be truly what I want it to be, but at the end of the day still picking up my pencils because drawing is fun? C H E C K. I think if you approach it from the view of wanting an action isekai, it doesn't stack up. But I approached it as a commentary on the painful dance between a creator, their creation, and the audience's reception to it and that's where I found my enjoyment. Also DANG it gave me so many flashbacks to the silly sketch comics I made in school where I met my ocs and they got mad at me for torturing them aj;sdlfk

An important reason to why SLF's fights feel like Sunraku *could* loose them is that he actualy *can*. For wast majority of the fights, if he loses he will be at worst mildly inconvinienced (which makes that one boss fight, where the stakes are much higher, kind of unappealing). The short description of Eminence is "what if Saitama suffered from a Haruhi complex?" What sets Villainess apart from all other "dense harem protagonists" is that she actualy canonicaly is kind of dumb, or at least hyperfocused on not dying (AND kind of dumb). An important thing about Mushoku Tensei is that Rudeus's behavior is framed and treated (by the other characters) as wrong. He does something wrong -> the other characters respond in kind -> he realizes he shouldn't be doing that and tries to do better in the future. He also doesn't go from trash to paragon hero over night. He does so step by step making mistakes along the way and precessing his trauma (and helping other characters process theirs, because he's been through that), because that's how life and people work.
@makaisenki5 ай бұрын
No life and people work by... "Oh you got trauma? Grow up snowflake what did you think this was a safe space?" Everyone my wife knows is a piece of trash. All druggies she will have to cut out of her life as they slowly descend into madness. I loaned money to one of her friends to keep the electricity running and she said it was a gift. I didn't have a job at the time either. I made money from swing trading, I got made fun of even though I can still get a 50% ROI in a bear market. I got criticized by her family for gaming too much and spending all my money on games, because my wife was spending all the money on cigs and fast food, and I had not bought a game in a year and hadn't played one in months because I was busy with work and taking care of my disabled wife. Just look at like how toxic trump or Biden supporters are if you say true things about them. People hate me because I'm autistic, and like to learn. They get mad when I talk about keto and say "blah blah Internet crazy" and I ask them what's wrong with reading scientific papers published in journals through an online portal. Someone wanted to punch me in the face because I said they might want to talk to their doctor about a fecal transplant because of the antibiotics her kid with severe allergies gets every year because it's a high risk for all sorts of problems later in life. Though this druggie cousin of hers also gets into fist fights with her first child she lost custody of. I dunno I don't really even have personal connections anymore. My friends are supportive but none of them have any money to help when I have issues and when I lost 170lbs some of them gained 50-200lbs. I get my social connection from cats and dogs I own. They love me, and want to be with me. I don't have to try so hard with them. Real people are a struggle to deal with, having to pretend to be dumb around some, get threatened for suggesting they talk to a doctor for their child's future risk, etc... Can't talk to anyone about anything because everyone's version of reality is different from everyone else. So you have to hear the same mainstream media talking points. I got temp banned on Twitter for talking about Joe Biden going senile and declining 5 years ago. I'm ahead of people. It takes people years to catch up. I vet my sources.

Re: Zero sits cleanly at the top for me not only for it being the piece of media i have cried the most at while and after watching, but also for how it finds new, increasingly more inventive and cosmically horrifying ways to explore its premise and what its premise means for the people in its world. No spoilers past season 2. Arc 4's exploration of Return by Death is masterful in the way it allows Subaru to optimize relationships, crafting the best way to save everyone and recruit the most allies possible. Arc 5's exploration is masterful in the way it explores a highly plausible limitation of RbD. Arc 6 turns the potential cosmic horror of RbD to infinity. And Arc 7 manages to create a premise even more deranged than Arc 6's, making me feel more heart-wrenching agony than ever before. God, I cannot wait to catch up on the Web Novel.

There is *a lot* to take in throughout both seasons already, so it's very likely that there's something new to pick up on that you may have missed the first, second, or even third time of viewing. With how much recontextualizing of characters and decisions made by these characters that also features, along with so many great emotional moments that seem to have even more impact than the first time around, and simply just becoming more familiar and appreciative of what is an absolutey goated OST, no viewing of Rezero feels the same. I've always liked the show since when I first watched season 1 back when I was 17, but to then rewatch it with season 2 at 21, to finally recently rewatching it all again at 25, I've really come to appreciate it all just that much more, to where it is now my all time most favourite anime. Re: Zero got that respect put on its name. Geoff has a great point about the story. It's psychological horror and mind games and also moments that make us reflect what we see on ourselves is what makes it the masterpiece that it is. The "Return by Death" makes Subaru come back to his last check point but still doesn't make him take life for granted. Everytime he dies he's always more than willing to get back up and try again no matter how many times it takes. That you can't always fix everything, and that it's okay to not be okay. That sometimes all you need is a lap pillow. Thanks for the great video man! 🤘

Escaflowne, while also being a really solid story with great characters etc, has one of the best orchestral scores out there of any media PERIOD. I’m seriously excited for you to experience some of Yoko Kanno’s best work (IMHO) and get blasted with some of the best epic and emotional music that exists. The show is really good; the music makes it GREAT.

@@ymw1107 IMO, the CGI in Overlord isn't in bad taste. And I didn't read the LN, but the story seemed very cohesive to me. As for Tensura, it's about geopolitics and city-building. It does what it intends to very well. The complaints about "Too many meetings" and "When's the next fight" are misplaced. If that's what you're looking for, Tensura isn't the series for you.

The line "he has exactly one lover in the game who wears full plate armour" had me in stitches!!! I had a flashback to all the bikini clad, overly sexualized, potentially insestuous isekai love interests and just... lost it? Shangrila Frontier is so great just for making that change, and so many more reasons.

I love the idea of making essentially 10 sub-genres and talking briefly about some solid examples (selfishly, because I want more recommendations lol) before giving a deeper dive into the “best” one in each category. Brilliant work, my friend 👌🏻 and the list itself ain’t half bad, might I add.

My school library had a small manga section. That is where I read the start of full metal alchemist, shugo chara, and Azumangadio. I read the first volume of that series there. I should watch the anime. Also I love the staff of distruction (which is just a bazooka that can only be used once and no one in the world knows how to operate it until the protagonist comes)

Reincarnated as a Slime, Overlord, So I'm a spider, so what, I got a cheat skill in another world, By the Grace of the Gods, are some of my favorites.
@nameless87895 ай бұрын
I enjoy slime, but I personally feel that it's rising actions are always a class above its climaxes. The build up and political maneuverings are always hype, but the the fights and climaxes tend to be underwhelming. It's at its best when they're having meetings and talking about stuff. While I am caught up on the anime for Overlord, I personally never really got all that invested in it because it just feels like a typical power fantasy but from the villain's point of view. However, I have heard that the light novels are a lot better as they tend to have a lot more internal thoughts and struggles for the characters that don't usually get covered in the anime. I also loved So I'm A Spider, So What. I went and read all of the light novels after the anime. I quite enjoyed how the story is told from multiple different perspectives and points in time. It reminded me of shows like Bacano and Durarara. My only complaint was that the last volume felt a bit rushed, but the rest was great. It's unfortunate the anime couldn't be of better quality, but I didn't feel that it diminished the story at all, and the voice acting, particularly Aoi Yuki, was top notch. I'm not really familiar with the other two, or at least they didn't leave an impression on me if I did watch them and just forgot.

I loved first season of By the Grace of the Gods, gave it a 9/10. Reason for 9/10 and not 10/10 was that there was no threat to MC. And second season continued same way with god awful animation and i don't like it anymore.

Overlord holds a special place in my heart as the first anime I started watching seasonally as it was coming out. I didn't even know anime released weekly like that at the time, so I was expecting a very short story when there was only 3 episodes. Spider rivals it's position and I think wins out slightly over Overlord for my #1 spot, though I'd feel a lot more comfortable saying that if the anime wasn't botched as badly as it was (Elf "forest" ... ugh). Both are not only the only anime to push me to read the light novels, but made me want to read them only a few episodes in, because the episodes couldn't come out fast enough.
