Sometimes, it's easy to excuse the actions of a cold blooded killer if they're portrayed by a charismatic, conventionally handsome actor. Penn Badgley apparently resented his character Joe on "You" after a while, pointing out that if Joe wasn't so charming, nobody would be condoning his actions.
@LoneWulf2782 жыл бұрын
I think this is a special case because Jeffrey Dahmer *was* in fact very conventionally attractive. That kind of bias and privilege (“pretty privilege”) was actually very influential on his ability to manipulate authority figures for so long and attract the people that he wanted, despite his strange behavior. Even his own lawyers and psychiatrists would describe his looks in their interviews and books without being asked about it. 🤦♀️ So yeah. His physical beauty mattered quite a bit to people. They thought he was unique because, in their mind, you have to look bad/crazy in order to do bad/crazy things. I think that kinda bias in our society could only be pointed out and criticized if the actor looked like Jeffrey Dahmer.

Working with college students for years, it is deeply concerning every time one of these serials comes out. Bundy now Dahmer - “He’s actually really charming” “He was kind of cute” because of the actor and missing that these are portrayals of real people who did real atrocities. I don’t know how to “fix” this reaction and educators can do some follow up conversations but it’s clear that the message is skewed by a portion of the younger audience. It’s a tenuous tug-of-war between entertainment and information and I hope the blame is not pinned on the actors.

I feel people forget how genuinely funny Evan Peters is, his casting as quick silver, being in the office, kick ass and Phil of the future show how capable he is as an actor because it is truly hard to play both comedic and dramatic/horror roles as well as he does. So many dramatic actors try to play funny roles and it falls flat and vice versa, but Evan Peters does both seamlessly. And yet he is being fetishized as this horror trope character and being type casted for that role. I wish Hollywood would see how much he is capable of and diversify his role especially because he has said he stopped doing a lot of work for a period of time because he couldn’t handle taking on another dark and twisted character because it caused a lot of mental health problems for him. Playing those characters over and over again without a break can lead to a lot of stress, people have to take breaks from crime and horror movies/shows all the time and watch something more light, imagine taking that home with you and it being your full time job. Then you see Evan’s interviews and see how awkward, sweet and funny he really is. He is completely separate from his characters and yet people forget that is the grossest way, dehumanizing and fetishizing his physical being and the terrible characters he portrays onscreen. He is a person and his characters are not him. He is handsome but his physical appearance doesn’t excuse his characters behaviour and antics, and people need to realize how dangerous this mindset really is

Just wanted to point out that unfortunately, shows like dateline, 48 hrs, 60 minutes etc have been criticized by various families throughout the cases they’ve covered in the past, to sensationalize/tweak aspects of their story- whether it be the editing, omitting key details and context, the questions asked, etc to bring in views and ratings. My telltale sign that someone is being exploitative is the use of sensationalist language, inserting themselves into the narrative of the case in order to flesh out the ‘story’, the lack of emphasis on the victims and how their lives were affected, etc. If the video reads like a storytime KZbin video circa 2017-18, or like a gossip magazine at the grocery store checkout, it’s immediately a red flag 🚩

I dont know when audiences started getting so wrapped up in the moral quandaries of dramatised accounts of real life events. I think the Dahmer series focused a lot on the victims and tried to give some insight on what could lead someone to become a serial killer (the psychology after all is often what interests people most about true crime). It’s starting to get on my nerves the chastisation of people if they either want to watch true crime or artistically tell stories that are in the public domain (and often happened DECADES ago). I didnt even know half of the victims names until i watched the Dahmer series, and now i know a lot more about them as HUMANS not just one of his numbers. I also have a brain that realises that it isn’t a documentary so am not using a dramatised series as a reference to real life events. I also thought Evan Peters was attractive - no that doesn’t mean I fancy Jeffrey Dahmer or am fangirling over a serial killer. I really wish people would stop moralising every single thing, entertainment is entertainment and should make you feel things, be curious, learn etc. not all of us want to sit around watching Telletubbies and stories where every character is lovely and “unproblematic”. We watch films about wars, rape, murder, we want to confront our fears and empathise with the experiences of others - as long as it’s not gratuitous i don’t see what the big issue is.

I'm not against it either but I do think if the immediate families of the victims or people who were directly involved are still around their wishes should be prioritized. Keep in mind what happened to Heath Ledger. Portraying such a dark and morbid character pushed him over the edge. Becoming that character forces whoever is playing them to be in a dark place, and stay there for a long period of time. While i cant 100% say this is what happened to Heath Ledger, nor can i definitively say this is where Evan Peters is headed. As someone who has watched Dahmer, i was extremely uncomfortable. That halloween, many kids from my school dressed up as Dahmer. I feel like the series itself is problematic. I felt like it was leaning into feeling bad for Dahmer, and what added to that was how he was played by Evan Peters. I had to atop watching it multiple times because I was so uncomfortable watching and sinking to that dark place. I can only imagine how Evan felt becoming Dahmer in the months of filming the series. Im glad Evan decided to take a mental health break. ive been to that dark place and it’s terrifying. While AHS is one of my favorite shows, and as much as id be sad to see him leave again, I hope he can leave the series all together and find a role much more suited for his goofy personality. I really hope he can heal.

I feel like people kind of forgetting Evan peters is a 30+ year old man and he knows what he is doing,no one is forcing him to play those roles, the recent "poor Evan playing all those hard roles" is naive. he went in there willingly,he could have said no and should have said no to that Dahmer show,it's not like he is starving on the street,he is rich. I love him i really do i loved him since I was like 14 but come on guys he is building a bank on thirsty girls like us .

I get where your coming from but I don’t think he’s doing it on purpose. He probably chose to do the Dahmer project because the story in itself is interesting and there are things that definitely need to be addressed that still happen to this day. I don’t think we wants to do these types of roles because he knows he’ll get little fan girlies. I also doubt he got casted because he’s hot, he’s a great actor and he’s good at playing these types of roles.

I was really disappointed when his role as Quicksilver got axed, he was really funny in those movies and easily became one of the top 5 actors in the X-Men franchise. Kayla thank-you so much for shouting out Kendall Rae as one of the least/non problematic true crime KZbinrs for the medium. In the early days of Truecrime she was one of the first I started watching and have stuck with to this day because her content has evolved to include lesser known cases, some of which involving indigenous, trans, unsolved cases that mainstream reporting media simply does not bring attention to. She also makes it a point to collaborate with family’s of victims and state s at the beginning of her videos to exercise kindness when leaving a comment as the family usually do read the comment section.

That is interesting when you said the most ethical form of True Crime reporting is Journalism. After Columbine and the way it was covered, the way it was glamorized and so much misinformation was published in articles and books (Columbine by Dave Cullen has a massive number of inaccuracies) there has been a push by many people who have been affected by the 24/7 news cycle to be far more ethical.

He is not stupid and he knew what he was signing for. You cannot simply agree to play a real serial killer with real victims who had families and get all praise. If people are demonizing Evan Peters only just now that Dahmer just came out, for playing Dahmer… Jeremy Renner played Dahmer in a movie years ago. Zac Efron played Ted Bundy, John Cusack played Robert Hansen in The Frozen Ground… Nobody went off on these actors for playing these roles. Did Evan Peters play alot of dark roles - yeah… However Evan hasn’t been some huge, famous actor until more recently… As a younger and newer actor, you get a script, and as a young actor, you just take the role. I really don’t see why Peters is being criticized for playing Dahmer… I don’t know why people were against the making of the series. Yes, I understand the victims families feelings on it, however the Dahmer story was already showcased in a movie… So why is nobody talking about that, or the several other serial killer movies and shows that have been made? I just don’t get it.

“I don’t know why people were against the making of the series”…” yes I understand the *victims families feelings on it* ”…You answered your own question. At a certain point, it becomes excessive.

late to this vid but i had a friend (keyword had, major mental issues) who was madly obsessed with evan peters and one day she came to me and admitted that she romanticized about jeffrey dahmer and fingered herself to him. she then proceeded to explain how she understood how he felt since she wanted to kill people too, and that if she had the chance, she would've been dahmer's friend back in his school days so she could support him and be there for him. what she said was more in depth than what i'm summarizing but it was fucking weird and insane. she would post about how much she loved evan peters and how much he loves her, and that someday she'll meet him in the industry and get married. which is kind of besides the point i'm making, yeah that part is weird but holy shit when i read the majority of these comments, it perfectly describes the way my ex friend was acting about jeffrey dahmer. she seemed to not care about the fact that this man murdered, raped, cannibalized, you name it, his victims. i chalked it up to her being fucking insane but then it hit me, i wasn't too well aware of all of evan's roles at the time and when i realized he was the one playing dahmer, it fucking clicked in my head. it's so creepy how these people excuse the actions of a literal serial killer just because he's portrayed by evan, who is considered really handsome. and it's not just dahmer either, all of evan's other roles which are usually dark and sinister, people seem to be drawn to men with issues. which is fine if it's just a character, because we can all like whoever and whatever we want, but if this were a realistic situation i bet you the same girls who fantasized about these characters (including my ex friend) would more than bat a fucking eye. so delusional, i'm sorry
