The memory loss was a form of a Non-Disclosure Agreement that Kirito agreed to for the test of this system. Basically, the gear prevents short term memory from being converted into long term memory and blocks access to your own long term memory. So you wake up and have no recollection of what occurred in the game and when in the game you regain that memory but lose access to your own memory.

@@nftbootlegger Consider them advanced NPC's then. I see this as an open world RPG and hence all the other characters are basically NPC's. Sure they're advanced, they have a wide range of choices/ options. That's all. They are NPC's which use AI.

All of you are wrong. They are AIs. AIs and NPCs are completely different. NPCs are programmed to act one specific way no matter what, AIs are more advanced, and act in more than one way, like your team mates or enemies in an FPS game.

AI are artificial intelligence. That means they make choices without our input.they have free will. Npcs non playable characters, basically programed people with a limited amount of responses. 0 intelligence basically. so yes,they are very different. Do your research people.
