most of the megablocks and hive cities we have in sci-fi worlds we have today have their roots on Kowloon. It basically a favela that grew upwards instead of to the sides.

It's not practically it is. A lot of the influence for mega-blocks in sci-fi works like Neurodancer were based on Kowloon, and 40k's hive cities are based on the mega-cities of Neurodancer and Judge Dredd. The cramped spaces, dystopian sci-fi themes/architecture, and using your dead citizens as a food source (corpse starch = recycled meat from Dredd) are previously thought of ideas translated into the 40k setting. Another cool design, but for fantasy, comes from London Bridge (the one from the nusery rhyme 'London Bridge is Falling Down'). Part of the reason why London Bridge burned is because an entire street was built on top of it, with homes, kitchens and shop fronts. So when ever you see a bridge covered in buildings in a fantasy game, now you know where the inspiration is from.

Well, to be fair, I'm pretty sure the 40k writers were partially inspired by Kowloon & partially inspired by things like Judge Dredd that were based on Kowloon

That's the perfect way to put it! One of the coolest places I'd never want to be. Much like Pripyat in a sense, it's just super different by force of circumstance from what is "normal".

I'm so so glad you watched this! I've been recommending this video to reactors for a while but very few actually watched it, most just watch the video by Neo (which is great in its own right) but this one goes much more into the feeling of the city, rather than just the history and numbers. Kowloon is actually a major inspiration for so many different amazing things from Stray to Warhammer to Dredd to Cyberpunk, pretty much any dystopian hive-city has drawn at least some inspiration from Kowloon!

One of my favorite Call of Duty missions takes place in Kowloon. The mission 'Numbers' from Black Ops 1 has you running and gunning across the rooftops and through the apartments with some of the best music in the game playing in the background.

There was also a game as a tribute to this place, athought they made it a horror game. Well living on that blocks is hell itself. It was also said that it is highly operated with lots of groups/mafias. Btw the Government decided to demolished the City because it is not that stable as it used to be and it might cause a huge disaster in history. Every people know that there was a lifespan for every man-made structure. Btw those Megastructures self-sustaining residence "Utopia" projects that was dreamt by rich people are just basically like this. It is not a futuristic cyberpunk or hightech environment, it won't happened cuz eventually it will be ended up like this because we are humans.

Hong Kong's colonial government demolished it finally because it was almost time for the British to hand HK back to China, and the governor thought that the CCP would use it as propaganda for how bad British rule was. The CCP let them demolish it in spite of appeals from Kowloon (they had stopped a previous attempt to clear out Kowloon in the 50s) because they didn't want to deal with Kowloon themselves. The difference between those pod cities and Kowloon is that Kowloon organically happened because of circumstance, and the people who lived there, not as some rich ahole's vanity project.

Paws, the Kowloon Walled City simply had to be demolished prior to 1997 when China took over, as it's a bit of an embarrassment for both countries. Also, the people in Rome had been using the Coliseum as a convenient source of stones for centuries. The Robert Rodrigues/James Cameron movie "Alita: Battle Angel" has its story set in Iron City, much of its design was based on the Kowloon Walled City too.

It might've been an eyesore, and I wouldn't want to live there, but it was the home for many, many people, who got scattered from their communities when it was torn down. The reason it got torn down in '94 was because the circumstance that allowed it to exist ended. Governor of Hong Kong felt Kowloon would be an embarrassment to the UK when they handed Hong Kong back to China in '95, and that the CCP would somehow use Kowloon against the UK on an international stage. China for it's part let them tear Kowloon down even though they had stopped previous attempts to clear it out, which they did as an annoyance to the UK back in the 50s. In '94 though, they didn't want to deal with it when HK would be given to them in '95, and they were more than happy to let the Brits finally clean it up for them.

Have you heard about “The Line” they are building. I think it’s in the UAE but not positive. The Line is going to be a new style of city that they are testing out and it will be very narrow, tall, and very long. They want to build it so you have homes and businesses close together and can commute by walking with intricate pathways connecting areas horizontally and vertically. They also plan to have some kind of tram system that runs the length of The Line. From what I’ve seen and read it kinda seems like they might have taken some inspiration from Kowloon but more modern with open spaces for fresh air and daylight.
@Ukitsu2
@Ukitsu2 5 күн бұрын
A bit of an update on this: The Line is already canceled; thank the gods, it was going to be a waste of resources for the entire planet, and it was gonna fail anyway. It was definitely not a positive thing. btw, the cities in the UAE aren't an example of good urbanism, either.
@Dieselneck73
@Dieselneck73 5 күн бұрын
@ I hadn’t heard it was canceled. I thought it was an extremely ambitious project to say the least and also thought it was probably going to fail if built. I had seen something that claimed to be earthworks for the line but could have just as easily been a road or a runway. I could see some similarities in the planned idea for the way people would navigate the line and in kowloon so thought Paws might be interested in checking it out see she seemed to enjoy this video
