+Vince Almaraz I agree. He was a bit of an arsehole to Leo's character for much of the movie but stood firm when the pressure was on to turn over Quinn's records, and then this scene where he got revenge for his two fellow officers was fantastic. I always wondered if the female police psychologist handed over the evidence Leo gave her to him for him to know for sure who the rat in the force was. While I thought the hit on Matt Damon's character at the end was brilliant, I thought the way it was executed was not quite realistic. If Mark Walhberg's character Dignam went to the trouble to break in and wear protective clothing, for sure he would have waited in hiding for Matt Damon to come in and close the door, rather then shoot him with the door open and splatter the open door & hallway with his blood for anyone passing by at the time or in the next minute to see.

There is a big part of Sullivan that welcomes death. Just before he opens the door, he leans against the door, seemingly tortured psychologically. He hates the choices he made that led him to where he is now. So when he sees Dignam, he doesn't try to run, he doesn't throw the bag at Dignam as a distraction, he doesn't scream for help from his neighbours, he doesn't try to attempt rushing Dignam & fighting back even though it would be pointless. I love reading everyone take on this ending, makes me see it from all kinds of different views. Here's mine if anyones interested - Sullivan is living a cursed life, the dog part just sent him over, he feels like everyone can see what scum he is. When he sees Dignam, he is shocked at first but knows exactly why he is there. He, for an instant, wants to try to talk his way out, but seeing the absolute hate and determination on Dignams face, he accepts his fate as he hates what he has become anyway, he knows there's no way out of this one. So he shuts his eyes and turns his head like a scared kid expecting a punch. Dignam gives Sullivan a couple seconds to dare to say anything, try to deny it, try to say you're sorry, try to say you didn't mean for Billy to get killed. But all he sees is Sullivan accept it and turn his head away. He probably thinks to himself " Not only are you a rat, but you're a coward as well, you won't even look at me when I do this. So I won't even say anything to you, you're cowardly rat scum, and ill exterminate you like one." Great film.

I hate to be "Mr Know It All", and in all honesty, there's no way I can claim that title on a thread with Donald Trump in it. But I can testify to the procedure known as the "surgical scrub" because, well, I'm a medical student. It involves, among other things, wearing a full body gown similar to the one Markie Mark is wearing, and it also involves wearing plastic shoe-covers, just like what Dignam has on, and gloves. Maybe Dignam quit the police force, became a doctor, and then came back to get revenge. He obviously violated the medical code of ethics by shooting Matt Damon's character. Also, when I was a radiopharmaceutical researcher, to enter into any radiochemistry lab, you have to wear shoe covers, a gown and gloves. So the other possibility is, Dignam went to work developing radiodiagnostic imaging tools at a nuclear medicine institution. Or maybe he pretended to be a doctor by first becoming a chemist. The final possibility is, and I think this is the most likely, that I'm just wasting my own and everyone else's time by writing nonsense when I have an exam in a week and should be studying. So at this point I apologise to all involved in this thread, especially you, Mr Trump, and I bid you fine people "adieu!".

Yea, Dignam, was a tour de force of raw human aggression that doesn't take insult from anyone. He doesn't show fear, but he's the type of cop I wouldn't want to be stopped by for a traffic violation. He would probably tell you you're getting a traffic ticket plus he's going to break your headlights and give you a ticket for that as well. Then, looks at you and tells you, "Hey speed-racer, you can just take an ass whippen and we can call it a day". Afterwards, he would tell you he's not even a traffic officer.

Rio Martino it would raise suspicions if he takes the groceries. What if there were witnesses that saw him going into the elevator with the groceries or there was a security camera at the lobby I’m wondering how Dignam was able to get inside that condo if he wasn’t a resident, also how was he able to get inside Colin’s apartment if he didn’t have a key, the only explanation would be he rappelled up to the window and somehow managed to make his way inside, and if he did why didn’t he made it all the way down from the window afterwards... I’m assuming all of Boston PD and The FBI will open an investigation about Lt. Sullivan I highly doubt Dignam got away with his murder even though he used gloves and a silenced pistol.. also many officers of Boston PD were aware of the Bad relationship between Dignam and Sullivan, also he resigned after his boss’s death. Used this scene as part of my English essay it really is cool and symbolises more what guys think In this scene, Scorsese used props to foreshadow Sullivan's death. From the start, Sullivan's first bribe into the gangster life was the grocery back full of items. Costello handing him the bag full of items is kinda like handing Sullivan his new life making the body and outside the brown corrupted paper bag and the inside and soul filled with bribery, guilt and corruption. The more and more items Costello's kept adding the more tainted his soul became so Costello could control it from the inside. This new body Sullivan had acquired was the start to his end. Throughout the movie, Sullivan was on a search to make his picture of himself higher. An example of this is the middle of the movie where Sullivan bought the new apartment. The real estate agent talked about how buying this apartment would be making a move up in life, basically improving the image of himself. Even at the end of the film where Sullivan kills everyone in the elevator scene that's his soul from inside that paper bag (the food items) acting and when he brought news to the situation saying he was a hero making him look clean he again brightens the image of himself. That's why the ending scene of The Departed where Sullivan is seen carrying a white paper shopping bag filled with the same items shows that even after all the things he’s done to clean himself he will never change what's on the inside that's why the paper bag changed but the items didn’t, and that's what foreshadowed his inevitable death that was coming a few seconds later. After Sullivan dies the bag falls basically symbolize his death as his body and soul falls to the ground spilling.

Wow! Very fine analogy! I couldn’t have said it myself.. you really gotta owe it to the directors for this one! Beautiful cinematography! The actors were also a great choice for this scene! They really nailed this scene and made it perfect. I think that this scene should be more popular in the filming industry... I think this scene should be used as an example for great movie making! I’m gonna bust a nut to this scene! Jesus fuck!

That's a bad analogy. Antelopes get ripped to pieces and suffer an unimaginably agonising and slow death. They fight to the end.

I love how this movie gives you both a tragic end (Leo’s death) and a satisfying end (Matt’s death)
@benjarvis74854 жыл бұрын
When I first saw this movie I was so bummed about Leo getting capped and Damon’s character getting away with all of it that I totally forgot about whalberg. When they show his shoes wrapped up at first I remember audibly saying “ohhhh shit!” In the theater lol

I feel like back in the elevator when Sullivan started begging Billy to kill him rather than hand him in, he had accepted he was dead. So when he finds Dignam waiting to kill him, he just goes "okay" since he knew it was coming sooner or later.
@KillaJ9725 жыл бұрын
Whalberg was just as real as Caprio and Damon’s characters. He knew what was up and knew how he needed to handle the shit the system couldn’t handle, then and there. A true OG.

What I like is that Dignam didn't even like Costigan but he still chose to avenge him by killing Sullivan. He constantly gave Costigan shit about his family's connections to the Irish Mafia but knew injustice when he saw it and wasn't about to let a murderer get away with his crimes unpunished

Maybe for some. This is normal attire for most. Also people who need to actually move and do things, tend to wear pants they can actually move around and crouch with ease in, like how a cop needs pants that are functional.

I see some people interpreted the scene in different ways, I have never had a doubt about this scene. I have allways thought that Wahlberg killed Damon out of revenge for DiCaprio and the police force. He knew he was the rat, and couldn`t let him get away with it. Still belives this.
@CognizantCheddar10 жыл бұрын
I think it was more revenge for Sheen's character than DiCaprio's character, but basically yes, Dignam knew who the rat was, and wasn't going to let him get away with it. How else can it be interpreted?
@CognizantCheddar10 жыл бұрын
38ldp You're overlooking something. Dignam (Wahlberg) was plainly implied to suspect more about Sullivan (Damon) than you're giving him credit for. Recall Dignam's second to last scene in the movie, when he physically attacked Sullivan, refused to unlock the undercover files, then was put on leave and went AWOL (until the final scene). Note that Dignam was fully aware that Sullivan effectively caused Queenan's (Sheen) death in highly suspicious fashion, not to mention Sullivan demanding access to the undercover officers file without any sort of good reason for it... all that, while Dignam also knew there was a mole in the police specifically trying to figure out Costigan's (DiCaprio) identity! *It wouldn't have taken a genius to see how Sullivan's actions pointed a finger directly at himself as being the mole*. Sullivan never gave a real explanation for why he was having Queenan tailed, and he never gave a real explanation for why he needed access to the undercover officers file. *And Dignam noticed that*. As for the clothes thing dude, that's simple: Dignam was a cop. As a cop, he obviously knew how criminals usually leave forensic evidence at a crime scene. So as a cop, he understood how to 'dress' himself to make sure the assassination would be totally clean. That's all that was, man.
