Great horse, Royal Palace, one of the best Derby winners for sure.

Thank you so much for this. My favourite Derby winner - one of the all-time greats, robbed of the Triple Crown by an injury, and winning the 1968 King George despite sustaining a broken leg! Royal Palace's 1967 Derby looks tremendous in this sharp Technicolor.

Royal Palace and Ribocco were the two class horses in this particular Derby, the rest of the field was of substandard quality.

I do love technicolour. Very under-rated winner, squeezed in-between the brilliance of Sea Bird and Nijinski he never got the recogniton he deserved, but Royal Palace was a seriously good horse.

When George Moore was very young, he was on a train from Sydney to Melbourne with a very young Tommy Smith, who would become one of Australia's most successful trainers. Smith told Moore, one day he will train the winner of the AJC Derby and Moore would ride it. It did happen when Moore rode Smith's Playboy to victory ten years later. When Moore dismounted, Tommy said 'Told you so'. Moore never won a Melbourne Cup, so this win on Royal Palace was likely his most important.

One of the most underrated Derby winners. He would probably have won the Triple Crown but for injury, and the following year, won the Eclipse, defeating Derby winner Sir Ivor, who Lester Piggott considers the best he ever rode, and destroyed an outstanding field in the King George despite breaking down in the final half-furlong. A pity there was never a chance to run him in the Arc.

Totally agree with you. Injury probably prevented him from becoming the first Triple Crown winner since Bahram in 1935

Racing had class back then!! Now, you may as well be in Primark, a council estate, or a brothel!!! Thank you Jockey Club, for bringing racing down to the lowest common denominator!!!!!!

at 2:12 starting tapes can still be seen. Stalls were phased in during 1967 for the major Flat races iirc.

Royal Palace was the first winner I ever backed , I saved my pocket money for months to back him , crack Australian jockey George Moore rode four of the five classic winners in his first season , but Sir Noel Murless thought he often went too soon on horses .
Royal Palace was a seriously good racehorse , won the Guineas despite his stamina laden pedigree , imperious at 12 furlongs , better than the fabled Shergar all day long
