I think Montblanc made a pen with a similar cartridge “holder”. I don’t know if they still make it. It was supposed to be a traveling pen, I believe. Great find for you and another great in-depth examination of pengineering.

HI DB! Thanks for showing this interesting and unfortunately short-lived pen! The design is quite futuristic, which may explain why it didn't fly from Pelican. They are really famous for their more traditional designs. Might have sold better if from Lamy or Faber Castell, perhaps.

The epoch nib used the same stamping die as the older silvexa nibs, and may indeed at least on the steel nibs been using up remaining stock from the series of pens (gold as well). Over time the sled tended to rust, wear out and snap. Also on mine after using it for over a decade the cap liner wears and the snap cap retention becomes very loose and barely holds, to where if you cap it and jiggle / shake the pen the body drops from the cap
@Doodlebud

Oh damn, hoping that won't happen to mine over time

Nice find & review DB! The filling system being cartridge only is somewhat unique & not one I've seen before (that's not unusual). Another unique cartridge only pen is the Bic EasyClic with a somewhat strange way of loading the cartridge. It writes surprisingly well for such a relatively cheap pen. Since you mentioned it, I had to go look and found a P361 with a fine nib that will be on it's way to me soon. I also saw a different seller had one P360 with a broad nib left, a much smoother looking pen. The P361 will sit nicely next to my Pelikan Level L5 with a broad nib!!

I think I will be grinding the nib on this one as it just doesnt do it for me. A regular fine nib on this pen will be a great daily user. Hope you enjoy your new pen!

Would you consider doing (or do you know of) a sac-size and nib-size identification, finding new/used sacs/j-bars/nibs that will work & basic replacement video? I scored on an auction last month and got several purse pocket pens, including a lovely small black esterbrook that needs a sac & j-bar, a small majestic (sears brand made by a different company?) that needs a new sac & j-bar - it needed a new nib but I ordered some replacement #5 jinhao 82 mini nib units and pulled the nib that I think will work, the j-bar & lever still seem snappy & functional... a pale yellow celluloid Signet that just needs a sac... Or differently... I have a pocket black Bohler (looks like a thicker version of the Estie Jr I have) that I need to figure out how to take the broken piston rod & stopper out of and then codge together some kind of replacement, and a lovely sheaffer balance jr with a translucent amber striated black pinstripe swirl body with MOP flakes overlaid, back half of body and cap are both black with the same MOP flakes... the blind cap and piston still move okay but the stopper very clearly no longer keeps a seal, and I haven't been able to determine whether the section is screwed in or friction fit. Plus I need a new nib (and ideally a new feed, as the feed I have is damaged). I'm really struggling trying to wrap my head around doing the puzzling out what size/type parts I need and where to find them what sort of process to go through to most carefully attempt disassembly and decrease the risk of causing more (and possibly irreparable) damage. Not your channel niche, and maybe taking advantage of your amazing support of subscribers, but pointers to any visual or video resources you know of or ideas for where to learn more for amateur vintage pen tinkerers would be super helpful.

@@Doodlebud oh that’s cool! So you’re gonna make the physical products then? Not upload the files so people with the means can make them? That’s cool. I’d love to print one just cause it combines my 2 passions, fountain pens and 3d printing, but I totally get wanting to make a physical product you can sell and earn from. Perhaps I’ll try and buy one when I can and they’re available. I’ve made a couple fountain pen items I’ve uploaded to the various 3d printing websites and it’s always nice to see how many people download them and comment how useful they are. The 1 thing I’m looking forward to getting in the future that you also deal with is the laser engraver/cutter. I want one so bad. Your channel is like the most weird amalgamation of these weird hobbies and they’re all my same hobbies! I love it! Your channel is like made for me. lol.

It feels like some Lamy pen. Similar in visible shape. Same as in Safari punctured-when-closed cartridge.
@Doodlebud
@Doodlebud Ай бұрын
Yeah definitely has a Lamy feel. Yup, same as on the Safari, Vista, AL, & LX. This one does have a nicer threading in feel when you screw it down. But its super smart to do it like that. Eliminates the issue of users not pressing the cartridge in all the way.

Cart only (no cart converter), is an instant deal breaker. CC is okayish but in general I'd rather not. It also depends on alternatives, I.e. I'm far more likely to accept a JP pen with a CC than say a Pelikan, as there are less alternatives.

I view the modern obliques as more of a unique aesthetic as opposed to a functional oblique as on vintage nibs. 5 deg or so with very little effort put in the modern nibs compared to the 40s-50s era pelikan nibs with a 15-20 degree grind in addition to proper profiling of the underside of the tipping

Like the design, pretty sure it's a good pen, it's a Pelikan, they never failed to produce good pens, but the no converter is a big issue for me. Sure you can always refil the cartridge but with time they tend to get loose and if you can´t find their model anymore you are with a useless pen
@Doodlebud

Another viewer said you can fit it with a converter. You have to fill the converter on its own instead of dipping the pen and filling it that way. I have a little needle end adapter to fit a converter to bottle fill it to make things easier
