From what I've heard Chihiro was basically meant to be a call out of Japan's extremely toxic gender culture, to the point a boy who isn't traditionally masculine is in less pain pretending to be a girl than being viewed as a failure of a man. It's absolutely a commentary on gender roles, just not a trans commentary. A VERY good comparison here would be Ranma 1/2, where we basically see the reversed situation with Ukyo(Girl who was too manly and eventually pretended to be a boy for a decade to escape the bullying), or Ranma's drowned girl curse teaching him not to be a misogynist. It's gender commentary, just not in the way a lot of modern western viewers might take it because Japan is a different place.

i knew almost nothing about danganronpa until this video and find it all fascinating. tbh i can totally relate to your sentiments towards the end about having a weird attachment to a series you're now incredibly critical of-i was a massive fan of the star wars sequel trilogy all the way through my middle school years when they were still coming out which um. did not end well when they turned out to be bad lmao

I feel like this discussion is super frontloaded to the 2016 onward era of the fandom. What about the SomethingAwful, OrenRonen, Project Zetsobou era?

I sometimes forget how much people ended up liking Nagito once the official english release came out. He really wasn't liked back on SomethingAwful much...neither was TeruTeru for that matter.

Gotta say you did an amazing job with this video!! I recently got back into DR and knowing fandoms I am glad I generally dont get deep into fandoms anymore AND also that I barely ever ship anything. It's a bit overrated imo. About headcannons, especially Chihiro, as a Persona and DR fan I gotta say I feel like those kinda headcannons arent really helping anyone xd? Those kinda headcannons feel like you just ignore a whole different problem to make your headcannon work and that bothers me a bit(also bc those kind of headcannons ARE often made out of stereotypes as you stated). What I mean is: tackling gender stereotypes also helps queer people because a lot of people still think "feminine guy=gay" (which persona tackled with Kanji f.e), I dunno how to feel about people ignoring this canon for their headcannons... But anyways, I agree with the whole video, especially the Killing Harmony part(as a Kokichi fan, man some can be annoying but Kokichi haters can be worse lol)

The one argument I would make is everyone can make a valid argument. Except for the people who claim Hagakure should survive. Chap 3 was a mess and a person with the title ultimate Gambler should not have made all the mistakes. I can accept Ishimaru dying but at least make the trial make sense. All she had to do was kill Hagakure put the AI nearby but have it covered so it doesnt know who took it, and let Hifumi and Ishimaru battle it out. Not perfect, but better than what they gave us. But this is a series with Great what ifs and the fans love arguing though it can look toxic

I started to be a Danganronpa fan when i was 15 (back in 2020) Now, I'm 20 (Btw, my birthday was recent. October 12th.)

Chihiro is canonically male and cis according to the creator. And according to Alter Ego and his Dad and Chiaki. Why would you program your AIs to misgender you? Nobody would do that...ok Miu would do that, but regardless.
