I can remember in the 1950’s when malls were first being built, people saying, they hated to see them built because they felt it would lead to store closings downtown. And they were right, main streets across the country began to die in the 60’s. Then when Walmart came on scene, people started worrying about the malls dying, but it wasn’t so much Walmart, it was the over population of retail shopping, or retail greed.

@Kelpie Birds Yeah I noticed that. I began seeing some more name brand stores opening-up in my local downtown district. I wonder if it's because they want an old-school small town Americana feel these days. No wonder why they're developing these open-air lifestyle/town centers these days. Because more Americans want to go back in time to the golden days.

More to add... I mean if look at these new houses they're building today, they are either Victorian or (more so) Arts & Crafts style houses instead of the more modern (I guess "then"-futuristic) minimalistic style homes of the mid-1900's (meaning like mid-20th century like 1940s, '50s, '60s and well up until the mid '70s -- maybe even early '80s the latest). I wonder how long is it until we start seeing people dressing up in suits and ties and ornate dresses again? And "apparently" they claim gas lamps are futuristic these days (along with EVERYBODY'S FAVORITE subway tile). Like REALLY?!?! I thought that shit went out over 100-years-ago! I thought this was the 21st century, not the 19th or early 20th. Weren't we supposed to have flying cars and MASSIVE spaceships like the Starship Enterprise by now?!

A mall like this could be converted into a beautiful conservatory with a massive collection of plant life. A few restaurants and stores could be optional, and community events, weddings etc. could be held here throughout the space or in reserved halls. It would be a massive amount of work but it seems like many pieces are in the right place in terms of layout. Especially with that glass ceiling. I go to malls today for the atmosphere but I rarely buy anything. If the focus was shifted to the interior space rather than stores, I'd gladly pay a small fee (parking, membership, donations) in some form to have access and I'd like to think other people would as well. Maybe someday this idea will be implemented in a mall of similar style....

These are wonderful ideas and i couldn't agree more. I'd love to see and be surrounded by plants, one of the things i wish buildings focused more of having - instead of an optional side piece. Plants would bring so much joy. And interesting takes with weddings and events and such

The real death of malls is cause by the rise of social media. Malls were built not just for shopping, but where the local community can gather. Strip malls are made for just shopping. Now that a lot of people are substituting the internet for a good portion of their social life in that sense the idea of a mall can be viewed as a dated concept.

@@hunterjayfilm -- I agree that the rise of technology and convenience have change society and behaviors. I remember when I used to hit the mall in middle and high school to meet up with friends in the early 2000s pre-social media. Now people can just Facetime or use IG to connect, despite that human element missing. My thing with shopping in malls though, def is the experience. You can't physically try on clothes in person or see certain items in the flesh. You can't experience the joy and chatter in the air or just people watching. Mall spaces have to be inviting, and the few malls that have been successful throughout time do a good job of providing an experience, on top of good mall management overall.

I remember visiting Rochester a couple years ago. I was driving down the highway and off to the side is this huge mall, and in the window is this carousel, sitting there forbodingly. The parking lot was empty and I could tell the place was abandoned, but the fact that that carousel was still there for all to see was absolutely fascinating. The building also looked to be in surprisingly good shape.

I used to go here with my Aunt and cousins when I was like 5. I remember going to the store by the food court that has the slanted storefront. I think they had a helicopter ride, but I was too young (I can't remember the name of it). My family grew up in Irondequoit and strongly opposed it being built, mostly due to lower income area. It would have seen success if it was built in Webster (the town to the east), but at the time it was undeveloped and young. During the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's there were too many malls built and too much retail and Irondequoit Mall was one of them. What a tragic waste of labor and materials. While many people hold malls in almost sacred regard and have happy nostalgia for them the reality was that they sucked perfectly good downtown shopping areas dry and destroyed them. Malls and suburbia itself is a a poor use of land. None of the malls, especially the ones built in the '70's and '80's were actually that beautiful or aesthetic as they were nearly all Brutalist, windowless, prison-like barns very much alike. I'm not sorry to see them go.

um, bit of reality check, the 'downtown' you're referring too, was already going downhill way before this place came about...so, there's THAT. People hold malls in high regard for the memories and fun times they had with family and friends...y'know, before everyone had their head so far up social medias ass they forgot what having an actual life and relationships was about. Don't rag on something you apparently never got to experience just because you're an uptight prude.

Sorry, but it wasn't 'over sauration of retail' that did the mall in. Remember, none of the current retail development in Webster was there when this mall was built. No, it was an unruly young crowd that made suburban shoppers feel uncomfortable and so they began to stop coming. The stores reacted by offering less merchandise and the spiral downward was inevitable! I never felt unsafe at the mall. But this is a classic example where 'perception was reality.'

Another great production Ace! I grew up in Rochester in the '80s-'90s. I remember going to this mall with my parents when it opened. I was 9 years old, turning 10 in a few weeks. Absolutely amazing mall. I was used to Long Ridge, Greece Town, and Marketplace, so to see the incredible amount of natural light and bright white walls and cool '90s colors was awesome for even a 9 year old to take in. I agree with your comments about malls bringing back emotions and memories. When you walked into that Ruby Tuesday's I was taken back to 1990 when my parents and I had dinner there at what was then called Stash 'n' Stella's - a '50s themed restaurant with jukeboxes on every table. The mall's 2-level Italian built carousel was dismantled and sold to a collector in China for $245,000. Another thing I do remember about the mall was early after its opening there were rumors around the area that the mall was sinking...and that all the big trucks driving by on Route 104 were making it worse due to vibrations...nothing seemed to have ever came of that. I do remember my first trip there feeling the railings and floor of the upper level halls shake.....don't know if that was caused by all the people walking or the trucks (probably all the people)! Keep up the great work!

As a kid it just seemed like such a fun place, all lit up like a carnival. It’s sad seeing it crumble into a landmark of failure and wasted opportunity in Rochester. I’m happy we at least have this 4k footage (and remarkable 90s video) to hold onto. As a tribute, I found an old snapshot of the logo and recreated it digitally to help preserve it. As a local Rochester NY area resident, I can say that the downfall of the Irondequoit Mall/Medley Centre Mall is indeed sad. As far as malls go in the area, it's one of the newest and nicest in terms of layout, design, etc. Aesthetically, it's FAR nicer than nearby Marketplace Mall in Henrietta, and I would say, even nicer than Greece Ridge Mall. IMO, location is what doomed the Irondequoit Mall, pretty much from Day one. It not in a typical suburban location, as are the other local area malls, and was simply not conducive to folks travelling there - especially when yes, there were at least 3 major malls competing for traffic. Hopes (and expectations) have risen and subsequently fallen over the years for this poor mall - truly sad that it never had a chance. We'll see how the "Skyview on the Ridge" Community Center conversion works out.

Malls are dying everywhere because public spaces, especially those near urban areas, are no longer safe. Even worse, the sense of community we used to feel in this country is practically dead. Malls in Mexico are still hugely popular. Why? Because they are safe. Also, people in Mexico go to the mall to see their friends and neighbors, and also to be seen. In Mexico they still have social trust and social cohesion. Not so here. The US is a dying country. It's not really even a country anymore - just 70 million socialists and Marxists, opposed by 70 million believers in the America we grew up in. The people who "won" the recent election hate the people who "lost". There is no "united" in the United States anymore. Malls aren't coming back; any more than America is coming back.

Social distancing while malling, no problem, just visit Irondequoit Mall. Corona virus is the final nail in the malls coffin. The old estimate was that 25% of the malls that were in existence in 2000 would be gone by 2025, now maybe 25% of malls will remain. Nordstroms and JC Penny have just announced bankruptcy. Future shopping will be mostly on the internet, Costco, Walmart, and hopefully back on Main St.

If you do your trip across the states you should check out Eastland Mall in Bloomington IL. It’s right next to part of historic Route 66. It has sadly been declining the last 10 years or so but really has gone downhill the last 4 or 5 years and probably has less than 50% of its stores left. There used to be 5 anchor stores and sadly there’s only one left, with another one being turned into a couple different stores. It has a pretty cool history and it’s the mall I grew up going to my entire life.

Yea, and when it shuttered all those people went to the Irondequoit mall...which made a lot of people nervous (or so I've heard) this WAS the very first place I recall hearing Spanish for the first time though lol

Haha, you said that you don't become sentimental "per se" and then went on to say that you're the definition of that sentiment! These places drum up some sentimental and wistful feelings- our senses aren't immune and it's ok to feel and remember the good times of feeling a larger world than us with friends and family and a large dash of consumerism.

I grew up going to this mall every weekend to race slot cars with my father, I was only around 8 or 9 years old at the time but I remember walking through as it was emptying out. I wish I could've had a chance to walk through one more time. A lot of great memories were had there none the less. Thanks for the great video and digging up some old memories I had stored away!

It’s a shame, that was a nice looking mall that had no chance. Remember going there a few times in the teen years. So many malls in the area though.

This is so close to my sisters house in Webster NY near off Bay Road. I have fond memories taking trips with her to this mall when I was younger. So sad to see this mall in disarray, but glad it's being repurposed. Thank you Anthony for getting these in vivid detail videos to help us reminisce.

I don't understand why malls in the states can't cope with competition from malls 10-15 miles away. In Australian cities there is a mall in every major suburb sometimes must shorter distances apart servicing the local community and they manage. I guess nobody in American towns walks or uses public transport it's a total car culture?

Drove past this mall on my way home from Kodak Center last December, it was hard to see at night through the snow - but it was easy to recognize the large, empty mall. I remember coming here a few times when I was younger, sad to see it go.

I lived in Rochester 1989-1995 when I was a little kid, I remember this as Irondequoit mall, while it was still a happening place. I think its gradual demise started long after we moved away, it’s like halfway eERIE (CANAL NEARBY!). I visited town for the first time since we moved away in spring 2019, my best friend and I drove by the place and still recognized it! Weird memories.
