However, SeaWings may not need that jawline for catching fish with their other natural advantages in the water, and they might have it to be able to fight other dragons/ survive on land. Also, they might have it to hold on to larger creatures like whales etc, or land animals when on land. Alternately, it may just be vestigial, and something that simply didn’t change as SeaWings migrated to the water, as they survived just fine without it. I think it’s probably this way for holding onto dragon necks.
@Rainydaysie
@Rainydaysie Жыл бұрын
exactly my point as well! evolution happens with natural selection.. and the seawings are a KINGDOM, a COMMUNITY. They share their kills with others of their kind, so the short snouted dragons arent dying off. Therefore, it's literally impossible for natural selection to occur in that way.

Plus SeaWings, as Tsunami realized while swimming to Pantala with Turtle, (epilogue book 12) still need land despite being built for the water. They can't stay in the ocean for their whole lives, they need to come out sometimes. It's like how SandWings live in the desert but still can't take hours and hours of scorching heat with no shelter, as Palm realizes, (prologue book 10) or how IceWings are very cold resistant, but they still have their limits.

@@oliviadavis3638 sea wings need to rest not to leave the water, but you might be onto something about killing land animals. Maybe their diet used to mostly consist of land animals because they could easily overpower a land animal in the water. They can pull bigger animals that might put up someone what of a fight, into the water and overpower them with their natural advantage. It would be better than having to fight something with the same advantages as you.

okok but hear me out, (spoilers for arc3 ahead) i think the reasons why leafwings & silkwings have those pointed snouts are because they do need to use them. according to half of arc 3 and the prolouge of chapter 11, they lived in vast forests which are crowded as HECK with all the vines, roots, carnivorous plants (you heard me, Swordtail), so obviously the animals have evolved to get around these with compound (and frankly, complex) eyes, lightning quick reactions and small, slim bodies, like fish! (minus the eyeball part). So the dragons, in turn, have to evolve as well. And any evolution could happen in 2000 years, amirite nightwings. So their nimble snouts were most likely used for snatching prey out of almost any pocket they could hide in the jungle. And although the Tree Wars happened and the breath of evil sucks, 50 years isn't enough time for a whole species to change based on new society; nonetheless two species. So there you have it, my argument for why Pantala is justified with their dragon anatomy. (JMA, you do have a point though. i knew tsunami's design was weird and had to double check the in-book guide. like, why she built like that? what happened to the horns and why is it so s l i m ? like that straight up looks like rainwing slim...ness. slim-ness, sure) Great video too, love to see more content coming! probably should add too if im going to write an entire essay on youtube.

JMA I’ve had a theory/headcanon for a while that might just solve this anatomical crime. So my theory is that a long time ago (likely pre-scorching) some force drove NightWing ancestors out of their territory and into the sea. Then, after thousands of years, they evolved to better suit their underwater lifestyle, but they still kept some semblance of their original appearance. For example, they both have stocky builds, plantigrade feet, and the aforementioned short snouts. Even the SeaWing spines look like webbed NightWing ones, and they have similar scale patterns on their necks. TLDR: SeaWings and NightWings are evolved from the same species, and that is why they have short snouts Also I love your content JMA :)

Never knew that but definitely a valid point. The only thing I'm curious about is are fish enlarged in Phyrria (sorry if I spelled that wrong) and Pantala like fruit is? Because in book 2 Riptide runs into a whale and with the wording it sounds like the whale might be around the size of the dragon which means its size wouldn't have changed much. If dragons are so large they wouldnt need as large mouths if they mainly ate smaller fish, but if they ate sharks and larger aquatic animals it would make sense for them to have longer faces.

actually, a lot of aquatic predators do (did) have robust jaws. discounting the shellfish specialists, many large sharks and nearly all of the aquatic carnivora have very powerful bites. orca are a major exception here, being just about the only macropredator that doesnt have robust jaws, which is likely due to its ancestors being fish specialists having only recently transitioned to marine mammals, similar to humans only recently transitioning from the trees to the ground. of course, other modern cetaceans lack robust jaws as well, and all are specialised to much smaller, often piscine or mollusc prey, meaning orca are your best modern base for a large hunting mammal. take a few steps back in time, however, and you will see that damn near all of the cetacean predators had robust jaws. from the extrmely primitive dorudon and basilosaurus to the more modern acrophyseter and livyatan or the much stranger coronodon, which was technically a balleen whale

do remember that tsunami was raised on cows and pigs and goats and such, not necessarily fish, so her snout structure could be different compared to other seawings due to the prey she was raise on and her method of hunting, which likely WOULD be more like a lions. but more likely so that it was just a design error.

There are a lot of factors in this to think about. I've also heard that the wing anatomy for the dragons in WoF is off. Apparently, in order to properly function, the wings should attach to the spinal column... not the shoulder. @@JadeMountainArchive well you did too, plus I think I should add that the seawing hunting strategy is similar to that of a shark. They swim close to the target as fast as they can, and either grab them with their claws or bite them. And considering they often hunt to eat later they most likely grab their prey, to not accidentally bite it in half. The queen would be furious if a hunter bit the tail off before it was brought to the cooks, wouldn’t she? … Well that was a load. I understand you, even I had rage moments on similar details. But in the same time the snouts of seawings never bothered me that much. Maybe because it seemed to me quite… understandable, and sensible.

what about animals like sharks, whales, dolphins, and porpoises? they eat animals like fish and have pretty bulky jaws. i think seawings have bulky jaws so they can tear into larger prey. while they eat fish, it's also been mentioned that they eat animals like whales and snails... i don't imagine super sleek jaws being very effective for eating those types of foods. seawings with longer jaws would still look kind of cool, though. have to admit lol

Wasn't that the shape of the jaw looked like in the Nightwing guide to dragons? Also seawings are not fully aquatic, they can live on land. Due to that they need a specialized jaw to eat a variety of prey, should they ever be on land for a stretch of time. It also could be the case that an Animus made their snouts different, possibly to fit in, or to eat a variety of food.

I know this isn’t being serious, but… 1. Dunkleosteus ate sharks with a much blunter snout than that. 2. These dragons could not have evolved from reptiles. Reptiles are Tetrapods. Dragons in wings of fire have 6 limbs. You can’t just evolve an extra functioning arm as a vertebrate tetrapod. It would need a good place or way to attach, and there are only two forms available: the pelvic girdle and the pectoral girdle. Both require being at the end of a rib cage, not in the middle. They would have to alter the arm joints in a way that would make using the arm very difficult for many many MANY generations. To make a hexapod dragon, you would need to go back to the many-segmented creature vertebrates evolved from, and select for an extra set of limbs, then re-evolve it from there through reptiles, to dragons. This is why every flying vertebrate has wings made of the arms. But fortunately there’s magic in this world, so many impossible or nearly impossible things can happen.

I don’t know how to explain the Pantalla dragon snouts, but Maby sea wings have their noses like that for fighting or hunting on land which they sometimes do. Especially Tsunami
@Dog-with-Insomnia
@Dog-with-Insomnia Жыл бұрын
Id like to think that the reason they have those kinda snouts is because they are simply faster than most of the things they hunt, and plus, they can always use spears. There is no use in a long snout to catch fish if you can just hurdle a spear at them.

To be fair you could argue that becuase seawings have weapons they don't really need elongated snouts plus they are huge compared to fish therefore and a lot faster therefore do not need as much range im their jaws

Think about it: Tsunami grew up in the caves. She would have eaten stuff other than fish and therefore would have developed a different snout.

JMA, I want to tell you something, Its not a big deal Tbh plenty of dragons who live in water have short snouts, and aquatic creatures in real life have small snouts and primarily eat fish like axolotls

Wow why didn't I think of this. Personally, elongated snouts would look really cool on Seawings. Like imagine what looks to be 2 prehistoric sea creatures rapidly swimming towards you, communicating with flashes of life, and then being able to reach you from farther away o.0 (RIP fish)

My theory is that all tribes evolved from a single tribe, which is why they have some fetures that don't make sense just like the tailbone in our skeleton. it's also possible there's been a lot of cross breeding between the tribes, which gave them the similar characteristics.

The small nerdy detail that got on my nerves was how after thousands of years of isolation of the "Dragon" language, after it was bought to Pyrrhia, it didn't change. The Pyrrhian and Pantalan languages would've evolved in that time and become mutually unintelligible.

Tbh the covers have been a little inconsistent with the book's descriptions sometimes. Just look at the cover of Darkness Of Dragons: Qibli has a traditional slim dragon snout instead of the usual blunt Sandwing one, his earring is in the wrong ear, and he doesn't even have his signature scar!

One thing I and some other commenters have been wondering is how to think about the shape of shark snouts in relation to this. I'd love to hear the perspective of someone who's into zoology on this!
@Simon_The_Chipmunk
@Simon_The_Chipmunk Жыл бұрын
They don't eat as much fish as you'd expect. Their diet consists of mostly seal/larger fish (compared to their body size), so they would mostly use their mouths instead of catching fish at a distance charge and ram into them stunning them and enabling the shark to use it's teeth to rip and tear their prey apart.

Honestly the sea wings have always bothered me. The fact they have wings at all is a little ridiculous, in fiction we'd typically see water based dragons as wingless or surpents having attention around long fins etc

I've also noticed another thing that this cover has that should be a bit different! If the dragon on the cover is really Tsunami, then where are the spirals on her wings? Turtle has them on his cover, but Tsunami does not!
