The Development of the Chinese Navy

About the projection of Chinese navy, the total number of ships, submarines, naval aircraft and supporting infrastructure continue to make gains, which will likely continue in future years. With this as a baseline, the strategic, operational and tactical proficiency of the Chinese navy has also made progress in parallel, with varied results. At the strategic level, the Chinese navy has attempted to strike a balance between regional focus on the western Pacific and adjoining waters, and other, sustained operations in distant waters. While it is accurate that the Chinese navy has expanded the scope of their operations over the past decade, they do not have sustained global presence and reach. Concentrating maritime power in areas such as the East China Sea and South China Sea has certain advantages, although the cumulative impact of years of at-sea time and tough challenges in the world’s oceans is an important barometer of capability. The PLAN will achieve the proficiency associated with extended maritime employment in time, but a strategy which allows both a regional and global deployment posture has yet to be fully realized.

Military TV seems to be using data from 2019 for some strange reason, here's the some corrections on the both the surface and underwater assets of plan according to official data in 2021 1. China currently operates three type 055 cruisers, with another 2 in sea trials and 3 going through fitting out.They include: 101 - Nangchang 102 - Lhasa 105 - Dalian 2.China also operates 1 amphibious assault ship (basically helicopter carriers) with another 1 in sea trail and 1 going through fitting out. The ship currently in service is: 031 - Hainan 3. China currently operates 36 destroyers, their types include:

They also forgot to mention that the Chinese navy main theater of operation is near its Mainland. Therefore the navy is able to count on tremendous fire power from its land based assets in the form of land based mobile anti ship ballistic and cruise missiles and land based airpower that can reach thousands of miles in range within the region. Furthermore, nobody wants to join any anti China alliance in East Asia other than Japan and Australia. Nobody want to join the US to go to war with China in the region other than Japan and Australia.

After all in the Taiwan Straits, USN will not just fighting against the PLAN but also fighting PLAAF and the worst of all the PLARF with their DF-21D, DF-26 & the lastly the most deadly DF-17 Hypersonic Glide Vehicle which US General John Hyten has stated : “We don’t have any defence that could deny the employment of such a weapon against us,” General John Hyten, who is now vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in March last year(2018). As for why most of nations in Asia does not view China as a threat because they don't see China has any expansion ambition & 2ndly China is their important trading partner. For example Antony Blinken tried to persuade ASEAN nations to join US against China, he failed in all the nations he has visited and cut short the trip!!!! 😂

you give too little credit to china, esp. looking at what the pla navy has achieved in such a short time. the u.s. navy took over 50 years to get to where they are today... i doubt they could've achieved in such a short time the same scale and projection as in china's case. even real mil experts have publicly stated what the u.s. navy achieved comparatively in 20 years, china is likely to do it in 5-8 years.

Check it out... From 2014-2022 (8 years time), 8 Type 055 14,000 ton mega-destroyers have already been built (3 commissioned, 5 in sea trials), another batch of 8 under construction. The first Type 055 started construction in 2014 (No, that's not a typo. EIGHT YEARS ago) and now ........pause . ....Along with the 8 new massive multi-dimensional stealth capital warships being commissioned to the Chinese Navy also includes but not limited to China's 2nd aircraft carrier the 75,000 ton Type-002 Shandong which was also launched/commissioned into active duty within the same time frame, along with 2 more 7,500 ton Type 052C destroyers (predecessor of the Type 052D), twenty two (yes....22) 8,500 ton Type 052D destroyers (already one of the most capable modern warships capable of hot/cold launches--unlike the other modern systems that can only do hot or cold), seventeen (17) 4000 tons Type-54A frigates, seventy one (71) 1,500 ton Type 056 corvettes, three 45,000 ton Type-075 LHD ("mini assault carriers"), 5 Type-071 25,000 ton LPD (landing platform dock or amphibious platform dock), eight (8) 7000 ton Type 815A/G "intel gathering/long-range signal & reconnaissance surveillance/monitoring "ships", two 11,000 ton Type-94A Jin-class SSBN (able to launch ballistic nuclear tipped missiles anywhere in the world), the Type 094-class sub has 12 silos on its back, with each JL-2 missile carrying up to 8 MIRVS (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicles, independently hitting their specific targets) and three (3) 7000 ton Type 093 Shang-class SSN (nuclear power attacked sub) being commissioned into the Chinese Navy (PLAN) all in 8 years...and from recent satellite imagery of Chinese military shipping docks (just outside, not inside those humongous ship building factories), there doesn't seem to be any slow down. But the real baddies under construction/being fitted out are the new 20,000 ton Tang-class SSBN, with 24 silos on its back, with the new JL-3's being able to fire SLBM (submarine launched ballistic missiles), cruise missiles, anti-ship/air/satellite missiles) and each warhead carrying 10-12 MIRV, the 85,000-100,000 ton Type 003, China's first flattop carrier with EMALS. The 4th, or starting from the 5th, Chinese carriers would be the orcas of the oceans, 130,000-150,000 tons, AI assisted/operated, highly advanced and sophisticated and can carry 120+ aircrafts. These baddies are going to come online by 2030. That's in 8 years.

I wonder how effective the PLAN commanders and sailors are, at their job. It is incredible the rate at which China is expanding its navy, what could also be incredible would be if the PLAN is training personnel adequately to man these assets. How many institutions does China have to train it's navy personnel? What type of training is this?

The number of DDG destroyers is nearly 45 (including ships that are almost complete and are ready to join the fleet). The number of ships in the latest classes is huge (8 x Type 055 DDG/26 x 052D DDG/6 x 052C DDG/32 x 054A FFG/52 x 056A FSG/20 x 056 FSG/20 x 041 SSK/8 x 071 LPD/8 x 815 AGI/16 x 072A LST/etc) plus 3 x CV carriers and 3 x LSH helicopter carriers. These have all been built in the last 10 years or so, and 15-20 large sized vessels are commissioned each year, not including many dozens of smaller and medium sized auxiliaries and also dozens of new CCG and MSA coastguard patrol and support vessels each year too.

Those coast guard, frigate, corvette and even thousands of commercial ships can be used to form a sea wall along the Taiwan straight to create a corridor and absorb damage for amphibious assault on Taiwan beaches. Taiwan just don't have enough missiles to sink these so they even want to avoid these less valuable targets. But the weapon armed on these smaller vesseles can also do a lot of damage.
