A full unabridged audiobook of the classic fairytale, "The Devoted Friend", by Oscar Wilde - complete with sounds and visuals.
The Devoted Friend tells of a poor man by the name of Hans and his unlikely friendship with a well-off Miller in the village. As the story progresses, we realise that this friendship is not as equal as it first appears and the demands placed upon Hans become greater and greater, ultimately leading to tragedy.
The story was first published in May 1888, as part of a collection of fairytales by Wilde.
Read by Elliot Fitzpatrick.

This story mentions the "linnet" and since I didn't know what that was, I looked it up. I see it's not a native bird to the Americas (I'm American) so that's why it hadn't heard of it previously. Unfortunately, wikipedia says "In Britain, populations are declining, attributed to increasing use of herbicides, aggressive scrub removal and excessive hedge trimming; its population fell by 56% between 1968 and 1991, probably due to a decrease in seed supply and the increasing use of herbicide. From 1980 to 2009, according to the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme, the European population decreased by 62%. I'm very sorry to hear that. It's eggs are really pretty, white with little purplish speckles on them! As an avid bird lover and feeder for them, I hope the linnet is able to make a comeback in Britain and Europe. Thank you for this great story! I love Wilde!

Yes, there are precious few linnets. Many people don’t know what to look for. The male is extremely recognisable though and they have a lovely song. Thanks for listening!

Have you heard the cockney song”My Old Man said Follow the Van”. It mentions the wife taking her ‘old cock linnet’ a bird which was very popular in Victorian times.

"The devoted friend" is surely the nastiest thing Wilde has ever written; up to now I am not quite sure what I should despise more : the utter ruthless selfishness of the miller or the utter dumbness of poor Hans.

I love Wilde's stories but I couldn't listen till the end because I wanted to throttle the miller and couldn't beer how much abuse Hans was willing to bear, loved the kind little son. Sometimes things are just too much. But this is very well done and it is a reief tohave achange fromystrries and thrillers . Thank-you

A ferocious piece of satire! I wonder if Wilde had any individual in mind when he wrote it, or if it was a general observation?

@@classicaudiobookswithelliot Good gracious! And yet, now you point it out, why should I be surprised? Nursery tales traditionally warned children that the world was a dangerous place and they should not trust their natural enemies ('The Gingerbread Man'; 'Little Red Riding Hood') or that they might need to use their wits to get them out of a tight spot ('The Billy Goats Gruff'). Wilde was pointing a similar moral at a more sophisticated level.

@@heidimartin5070 it's deeper then that, Hans wasn't aware of anything like that, he is just a human being, where as the miller is a monster who thinks he's a human. I'm sorry for Wilde to have encountered such monsters.

i hate this story. i hope the miller gets his. Poor Hans is so gullible. why would Wilde write such a horrible story. it’s so hard to listen to and very sad! the rat is horrible, too. i don’t get it! i’d rather read “A Christmas Carol”. now i have hatred for the rich and know these types much better. there’s one in amurica now who is just the same. is that why he wrote this story? to show what these people are really like? if so, it certainly worked!!!
