Thanks for your comments Trevor. I often get customers coming up to me at shows and tell me they bought a tool 10-20 years ago and it's still their main go to turning tool. Treated respectfully they will easily last a lifetime.

Excellent video! I have had these holders for some time but still learned some new techniques. Many thanks, John

Thanks John. Yes there are a number of techniques such as turning the tool bit 90 degrees to give a shear cut that many users would not be aware of.

Nice tool. Must be great for the hobbyist. I want one for sure now that I have seen this demo. Such fine finish has been very hard for me to achieve on my small lathe.

This thing is amazing. Its now my go-to turning tool. Mind you, I've got a drawer with $1000's of dollars of carbide tooling. My only complaint is I didn't buy it 10 years ago.

@@eccentricengineer as you showed it has no problems with metals. But the inherent geometry really shines in plastics. There is nothing better.

I recently bought the diamond tool holder and I love it but now its time to sharpen some bits. It looks like you are using a 6" grinder, is your tool rest (table) at the centerline?

I was always surprised by one moment with this holder. Why does HSS blank sharpen not at every corner? Indeed, in this case, it is enough to turn the cutter when it becomes dull and work? Trips to the grinding machine are 4 times less frequent. And the cutter consumption is 4 times slower?
@peterroach9045
@peterroach9045 Жыл бұрын
Because the "end" grind creates the top clearance/rake. Even if you ground with zero rake, the tilt off the tool bit end has a compound slope, (slight concave because of wheel diameter). You could use all four corner IF you hollow out the end and ground each corner separately, so you would have a castellated end. Easier just to buy and use more pieces. ( HSS bar comes in 4" lengths so just chop a few bits.)

Just got a set for Christmas and am enjoying it so far! One question, though: any suggestions for chip-breaking in aluminium?
@eccentricengineer

Glad to hear you are happy with the tools Richard. I usually use 2011 free machining grade whenever possible as it comes off in small chips rather than the long strings of some other grades. If I need to use 6061 or 6262 Ally I put a chip breaker on the top of the tool bit with the corner of the grinding wheel. I'll have to do a short video on how to add a chip breaker when I get a chance as it's a bit tricky to explain in a comment reply.

Hi Gary. Been having a bit of trouble of late burning up HHS tool tips and I'm sure it's me. I need to verify my tool rest angle, but one question is how long do you generally extend the tool in the grinding jig? Second question I thought I'd ask here so if it's a dumb question no one else will need to ask. I saw the comment below on the tool holder at 90 degrees, and that's what I've been doing. I assume where I've noted a different angle it's an older model tool holder. Normally I use a 1X2X3 block off the chuck face to set a 90 tool holder degree but the tool angle to the work looks really shallow. Is there a tool to work angle I should watch for? TIA, Ron/Shiseiji1958

Hey Ron, did u fix your problem with the burnt tips? Im curious to know, thanks Victor
@ronkellis769
@ronkellis769 Жыл бұрын
@@vl_hantverk Yes. It was probably my feed rate, but also using a tool with a radius on the nose took care of the problem. I now grind one end with a radius and leave the other end sharp. If I need an absolutely square cut I will just flip my tool over.

Hi Trevor, yes the head angle was changed a few years ago so that when the shank/toolpost is at 90 degrees both the left and right hand tools will turn and face a workpiece without having to readjust.
