As for someone who has a real interest in Smithing I didn't think I would learn so much in 8 minutes. I knew some things bout the whitesmiths (mainly they worked with tin) but most of that was new to me. And I've never even heard of the other color smiths (or at least in that term) until now. Great job!

But whitesmith are the ones that deal with the real heavy metal (i.e. lead).

The distinction that someone making jewelry from silver is a goldsmith, while a silversmith makes objects like plates and cups etc, is still true today. Signed, a goldsmith ;)

My grandpa was able to work with multiple materials like wood, metals of many sorts. He hand crafted tools both large and small. He made utensils to use and hand made musical instruments! I recall him showing me his workshop in making violins, guitars etc. He had brought all of these skills of mechanical abilities from Kentucky! I think his origins were in Scotland! Nice video.💪🛠️🔨⛏️🔧🔩🗜️🎻🎸‼️He was a pretty awesome musician too.🤔🤗👍

Smart and Martin and Martell are names also from striking trades...simmilar to Smith/Smidt,
@josiahtheblacksmith467
@josiahtheblacksmith467 3 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken martell means hammer which seems similar to heimer schmidt which means hammer smith. Smith is a derivative of the archaic word smite which means to hit. Blacksmith means one who strikes the black metal. Martel would indicate one who is a hammerer or who makes hammers. Charles Martel was Charlemagne's grandfather, Charles the hammer.

@@josiahtheblacksmith467 Smith means smite, or strike. Hmm... There are a few Labor Strike, and crossing-the-picket-line jokes here, that I won't touch.

I have never found a source proving 'whitesmith' worked in silver. Working with tin, certainly, also called a 'tinker'. Those polishing weapons, or armor were also called a 'furbisher'.

This has much more sense than what I thought was the reason for the name "black", I thought it was because they'll get very dirty for all the oxide and the charcoal 🤨🥴😅

i haven't watched the video yet but i'm gonna make a guess ob what the different teems mean, blacksmith is someone who works in iron or steel, whitesmith is someone who works with silver (or maybe polishing?), redsmith is working in copper, brownsmith is gold, that is my guess, i'm going to edit this comment and correct myself. edit: alright, i was correct on blacksmith, i was surprised at how close i was with the polishing guess for whitesmith, the reasoning behind my guess was completely wrong, it was that in the middle ages a suit of full plate armour which was also polished was called "allwhite", now that was wrong but i was on the right track, i was pretty far off on brown smith and almost right on redsmith (not quite though), i didn't even consider greensmith
