With the jjk anime two of my favorite fught scenes are the two where yuji and todo are fighting together against a single enemy using the "boogie woogie" cursed technique. The fights are also good in the manga but nowhere near my favorites but in the anime they did such an amazing job realizing that power in a way that they couldn't quite do in the manga. Being able to use that clap sound with the hard cuts to things switching positions so fun to watch. They threaded the needle of making those transitions easy enough to follow while still being briefly disorienting. I had just so much fun watching those fights.

Personally, my opinion of a fight scene lay in seeing the intent of the participants. A lot of choreography is about distracting you with colours and motions, a stream of superficial actions which exists just for the spectacle but does little to actually advance the combatants towards the fight's conclusion. There is merit in that, the ballet-esque fights of Wuxia films for instance... but I like to see minds actively working the riddle out of how to win and experiencing that with them. Whether it's the insane gambits of Araki's Stand battles or the brutal punch-outs of Hajime no Ippo -- Investing into the narrative of the fight is what makes it truly memorable to me.

It’s not just episode 7 either, character is constantly being built in every fight. The scrap for the stolen loot in episode one communicates Vi and Powder’s respective characters and struggles amazingly and wordlessly, in the second episodes enforcer encounter, we see Marcus prepare to fire at children to bring order, episode 3 is arguably Vander’s standout character moment in his brief fight, episode four, through body language, subtext, and subtle facial animation, communicates brilliantly the state of Jinx’s psyche post time skip, etc etc. Tiny decisions in every fight contribute to character arcs far beyond the fight itself. Consider for example VI’s fight with Sevika in ep5, with her recklessness that nearly kills her, compared to their fight in episode 9, in which Vi ultimately wins by learning to defend herself by blocking (“you’re guard needs work”) showing a broader shift in her character. Basically, it’s all peak.

I think your 6 are a bit simplistic Here would be my 6 parameters for judging fights: -Spectacle (Choreography, directing, animation, art) -Stakes (What are we fighting over? Are there win conditions outside of just killing the opponent?) -Ideas/Meaning (What does this fight have to say in the grand narrative of the story? What philosophies do they embody?) -Push/Pull (How the fight shifts advantage and how unclear it is who will win.) -Strategy (How much deeper is it than ‘they exchanged blows’) -Build up (Everything that happens before to make this fight make sense)

@@reaperandyel especially considering the breathing styles in demon slayer are not magic, it is purely visual candy, They are different sword styles, that require different amounts of stamina and strength to pull off with different angles, speeds, points of impact and situational advantages and disadvantages (which is true they do not use these different advantages or disadvantages in matchups but that could also just be because the slayers are dispatched with whoever is available and a lot of the slayers don't have special breathing techniques and just rely on strength, but the hashira are dispatched more specifically probably to their specific strengths and weaknesses, but they don't really address this in the show, so it's still a fair criticism

@@reaperandyelI think “magic system” is a stand-in for techniques, skills, and in-universe physics. Basically, it’s whatever sets the rules for a fight regarding what is possible and what is practical, as well as what sets each combatant apart both stylistically and strategically, which in turn makes each fight unique and intelligible. A series that does not define these things has a hard time depicting the flow of battle. Like if you watched a game of speed chess with no understanding of the rules. Or like if you watched an Any% speedrun of a game you have no familiarity with. This is actually part of why so many mediocre battle anime/manga pause the action to have some character comment on what is happening. Because the world’s physics and the characters’ abilities are too poorly defined for us to understand the significance of anything that’s occurring, and the budget/schedule is too restrictive to provide sufficient visual spectacle to distract us from the fact that we actually have no idea what’s going on.
@Starlit-MusicАй бұрын
4:55 For me personally the thing main thing I look for in a fight is unpredictability, something that I feel most don't ever think about but definitely notice when it's missing. It's that feeling when you see a 2 (or more) characters either preparing for a fight, or taking a breather during a fight, and you realize you don't exactly know how it's gonna play out. Even when you know that the protagonist has to win this fight, you can't possibly imagine how they'd pull it off, what they might loose in the process, or how any external factors may affect the fight. Jujutsu Kaisen's fight scenes are great examples of this, cause they constantly remind you that at any point things can take a drastic turn and that nothing is garinteed. The Last Airbender also has many great examples, specially how a simple shift in environment or even time can drastically change the tide of battle. Of course there are also bad kinds of unpredictable, ranging from fights that feel borderline random to fights that are so stagnant that if you didn't know it had to end you'd probably assume it wouldn't until one side passed out from exhaustion. At the same time though, when I feel like I already have a perfect idea of how a fight is going to play out before it even starts, as I did when I watched Bleach, I find myself quickly get bored of the fight and even get annoyed at any storry elements they try to interject into it to keep it interesting (i.e. the random flashbacks of random characters we'll never see again). Though it definetly has its time and place, such as in a few fights in Frieren where it feels more like you're supposed to know how it's going to play out (as it made it easier to subvert my expectations in later fights), it's honestly what drives me away from most battle anime.

I know that its very near to the end of the series but the culmination of the fight with Mahito honestly has to be put in a fight scene hall of fame somewhere. Yuji finally snapping and unlocking all of his potential, plus some, with the animators overlaying him imagining mahito as a wounded rabbit and himself as a hungry wolf chasing him down even though hes defenseless. If you really relate that to the story as a whole its Yuji's "going over the hill" moment with him realizing that his motivation for being a sorcerer and as a person is no longer to make sure he and others can "have a good death" he realizes that his one sole guiding reason is absolutely destroying anything that would prevent others from living as they should and keeping the scales even. Mahito's death being anything but good, fair or glorius and it was Yuji himself who caused such a death really was peak character development.

I feel like you didn't explain your categories well enough. I don't know how to evaluate them. For example, with my preferences; if I get bored by fights that have higher stakes than the story would allow the hero to lose, is that plot or hype or something else? If I like fights that say something about a character, but don't really impact the plot, like Yoda vs doku showing that Yoda is purely spiritual in his fighting style while every other character I had seen were more physical in theirs, is that an expansion on plot, is it purely choreography or something else. You clearly have a well thought out theory, but unlike your other videos, I can't really get my head around it.
@AWanderingSwordsmanАй бұрын
I'd imagine they both fall into plot by his system but I too am not fully on board with his layout. I'd probably put like tension, strategy, logical consistency, characterization, visuals/cinematography, and choreography. If the main character can't afford to lose for sake of the plot, it has no tension. A fights outcome is pretty basic in how it affects the plot (either bad guy was stopped, or they weren't) but very impactful when it comes to characterization. Like demon slayer's sword styles are about characterization for the most part, instead of strategy. The honest straightforward guy has bright fire, the adaptable balanced main character has flowing water until it changes to righteous fire. The sound guy is clever and flashy. The boar head guy is beastly. The zenitsu is... he just sucks. Because all these styles accomplish the same objective, the path the characters took to get there is able to characterize them (somewhat).

The hard thing about the magic system in Demon Slayer…is that there is no magic system. The author has said that there is no magic to the breathing forms, it is only visual. These are normal humans, fighting demons. I also think that the choreography of Demon Slayer is underrated, but that’s just my opinion. I think that Demon Slayer has been fundamental to create the popularity of anime in the West.
@brianangeli4378Ай бұрын
No, the magic system exists, it’s just that the elements don’t actually exist. Like when zenitsu does a thunderclap and flash, he genuinely moves faster than sound, but no lightning is created
@TheMrDavidCurranАй бұрын
@@brianangeli4378 but that is the difference between magic, and the fantasy world system. If within the fantasy world system, a normal human can dedicate themselves to training and then move faster than the speed of sound, that is not magic. It is a semantic distinction, but it is the difference between what is achievable for non-magic beings, and the demons, who can affect things outside of themselves that goes against the base laws of the narrative universe (ie, teleporting 1000s of people into a pocket universe).
@xXSamir44XxАй бұрын
Ah yes. Normal humans that recover from burst ear drums and other injuries in minutes, while fighting and straining their bodies. Not to mention a specific line from the manga.
@TheMrDavidCurranАй бұрын
@@xXSamir44Xx normal humans for the narrative universe are not the same as humans in our mimetic world. It’s the difference between for example, Will in Wistoria can achieve (most of) his swordsmanship without the use of magic, while Noor in I Parry Everything can achieve his swordsmanship through ‘skills’ which are magic. You have to look at it from the aspects of the narrative universe, not real human beings on planet Earth outside of the book/show/movie.

I feel as though you may have missed some of the general themes of Demon Slayer and some parts in your video kind of reflect that as I believe some of the points being made are incorrect Pt1 7:25 There is definitely a time when Tanjiro is at a disadvantage because he’s a Water Breather and just for using certain breathing techniques in general for example 1: When he’s fighting Rui (Thread Demon) he isn’t strong enough to cut through his blood threads and almost dies because of it leading to him remembering the dance and breathing style his father did and unlocking thr Hinokami Kagura 2: When he’s fighting Gyutaro and Daki his water breathing techniques aren’t strong enough to kill (because as he mentions multiple times he’s not great at Water Breathing) and the Hinokami Kagura is taking its toll on his body so he manages to mix the two styles thus learning new things about how breathing styles were made and how the Hinokami Kagura fits into that system 2.5: Tanjiro not being the best at Water Breathing is a main plot point that leads to him mainly using the Hinokami Kagura as his primary fighting style 3: And Tanjiro is often at a disadvantage from using the Hinokami Kagura until he masters it enough to use it consistently as his main style like against Rui where since Tanjiro didn’t get the kill and was completely out of energy he couldn’t fight Rui when he got back up but he managed to stall long enough for the Hashira to arrive 4: Another time is when he’s fighting Daki and almost asphyxiates when he goes into his slayer mark state and over exerts himself almost being killed by her until Nezuko saves him and the general disadvantage of the Himokami Kagura at first is the strain it puts on Tanjiro’s body which is why he switches between that and water breathing a lot in the entertainment district and Mugen Train Arcs 5: Also on the Mugen Train when he’s too exhausted from the Hinokami Kagura and the prior battle to be able to help Rengoku which upon Rengoku’s death spurs Tanjiro to learn how to use the Hinokami Kagura consistently 7:32 Next up trading opponents for a better match up this happens pretty early in the series 1: When fighting Yahaba (Arrow Demon) and Susamaru (Ball Demon) Tanjiro starts by fighting Susamaru using water breathing and it’s defensive properties to dodge the incoming balls from all directions and cut her arms off while Nezuko fights Yahaba but they end up switching opponents since Tanjiro can use the more flexible nature of water breathing to counter Yahaba’s Arrows Tanjiro ends ip fighting him as Nezuko would have too much trouble with him 2: When fighting Hantengu they swap for better match ups multiple times with Tanjiro fighting the Hantengu clones while Genya hunts down the main body eventually they switch because Genya isn’t strong enough to kill the main body and so Nezuko and Genya fight the clones 3: Again in the Hantengu fight when their fighting his Hatred form Tanjiro, Nezuko and, Genya are losing badly before Kanroji (The Love Hashira) saves them she then fights Hantengu’s Hatred form as she’s better suited to keep him at bay while the others find the main body and kill it Bonus: They’ve even teamed up for better matchups like when Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke teamed up to try and take down Daki using Tanjiro and Zenitsu for defense while Inosuke beheaded the main body as Inosuke was best suited for killing her as he seemed to be the only one of them that could at the time 7:42 This is a misunderstanding of the system in and of itself it’s not that the attacks themselves so much of have different effects as the point of every single attack is to cause damage but the main difference is the styles themselves some having more or less versatility then others it’s just like any real life fighting style the point is to beat the opponent and cause damage but the way you go about doing so varies from style to style Sound Breathing is meant to be loud and flashy in order to confuse the opponents senses and cause them to make mistakes in battle Water Breathing is meant to be defensive and flexible trading in power for adaptability especially from those who aren’t the best at Water Breathing they lose a lot of power in their attacks like Tanjiro did which is why he changed styles Beast Breathing is a more wild unpredictable style using chaotic movement patterns to throw off opponents it’s a style that relies more on instinct it’s why in his fight with Daki’s belt Inosuke’s moves where hard for her to read. It also allows for him to find enemy weak spots a skill no other breathing form seems to have Thunder Breathing is made to be incredibly fast focusing a lot of its power in the legs Tanjiro even used it to catch up to Hantengu during their fight when he realized no other form could work Mist Breathing is a style meant to obscure the users movements making them hard to defend against as you don’t know when and where their attacking from Later in the Hashira training arc we see how the different principles of different styles can be mixed into general combat with Serpent Breathing and how it’s useful for weaving around obstinate and surprise attacking your opponent and Tanjiro learns that general principle The goal of the styles is of course the same to attack and damage the opponent but it’s about how they do that and what is best for the scenario and how effective the user is at taking advantage of their style that determines their battle strategy and the flow of the fight

Pt: 2 A lot of story telling and key moments I feel are shown through Demon Slayers fights and the way they might choose to fight a lot of the stories being told in Demon Slayers fights have to do with Family, Bonds and, Connections 1: During the fight with Rui’s Mother (The Spider Demon) and her willingness to accept death instead of living under Rui’s false idea of what a family is and Tanjiro’s decision to give her a painless death and that sentiment being carried over into the fight with Rui and what a true familial bond looks like with different aspects of Tanjiro’s family aiding him in a fight against someone who doesn’t understand the importance of family Tanjiro’s Father saving him by teaching him the Himokami Kagura his Mother waking up Nezuko in order to save her brother and Nezuko unleahing her demon blood art in order to save Tanjiro and allow him to land an almost killing blow against Rui it’s a story of a loving family coming together even in death to fight a fractured idea of a family that Rui wanted to find by replacing the one he lost 2: Marked Tanjiro vs Daki and the fear Muzan and his blood has against The Demon Slayer he fought long ago and how that will is being carried on in Tanjiro as he cannot abide by the horrors Daki committed by destroying the town and harming its people 2.5 To continue with he entertaiment district the overall theme of the fight was to similarly Mirror that Brother and Sister dynamic of Tanjiro and Nezuko vs Gyutaro and Daki both the brothers being hard workers for their family both of them having sisters that their towns considered to be beautiful both fighting to protect their sisters but one also wanting to save his sisters humanity as well as the innocent around him while the other would rather turn his sister into a demon and burn the world down for her 3: Mugen Train Tanjiro’s hard decision to instead of living in a fantasy with his family instead choosing to kill himself in the dream world in order to continue to fight for what is right and even Rengoku’s will to fight to his death and how that related to his mother and the struggles he had with his family and Tanjiro having to face his weakness head on when he fails to save Rengoku 4: The entire fight with Hentengu was an allegory for how Hantengu would rather blame the world for his cruel deeds seeing himself as the victim is literally depicted by him being this small fragile looking creature despite actually being a strong monster he uses his emotions to manipulate and fight people almost as if casting his Anger and Hatred unto the world cause how dare they pick on him such a small and pathetic creature surely he could do no wrong 4.5: Also gotta mention my favorite part of the fight where Tanjiro almost makes the same mistake Gyutaro did where he was willing to protect Nezuko even if it meant that the Sword Smiths would die and Hentengu might escape but being tossed into doing the right thing by Nezuko and how later Tanjiro has to reconcile with his actions during the Hashira training arc when he mentions that he’s not perfect and he needs the help of others to keep him on the right path he could have easily ended up like Gyutaro or Rui but the people he meets help him grow and stay a kind loving person it’s those connections that make him who he is Some of Demon Slayer’s story telling is in your face some of it is subtle but it’s definitely shown through the fights and character actions I didn’t even really touch on too many side characters stories and how their fighting styles also kinda reflect themselves and their stories I mean Tokito and his Mist Breathing I think are an interesting pairing the general fog clouding his past as he lost his memories and how he seems to hide his more kind and gentle nature behind the veil of his blunt stoicism which is kind of his unconscious way of acting on the memory of his brother Idk how to end this whole thing I typed out so just gonna say I hope you have a good one i’m not a fan of this particular video but I don’t disagree with everything you said but I definitely think you and the guy in the video you referenced missed some very important details and that lead to you being incorrect about some things in Demon Slayer (namely Water Breathing Disadvantage, Match Ups and, the point of the Magic System/Breathing Styles) keep making videos and if you feel as though I’m wrong or misunderstanding something I hope we can have a good discourse around it

Incredible video couldn’t agree more with a lot of the points you made. Particularly about the importance of fight choreography keeping a fight timeless, another great example of this are some of the fights in cowboy bebop. While the fights do not have any of the more incredible flashy visual effects we see in anime today, they do have incredible and realistic martial arts choreography, that makes them still hold up very well. My 1 small very petty nitpick is that I think youre a little off with Toji vs Gojo. It isn’t about when Superman fell and was actually defeated. I think it is about when Toji killed talented prodigy Gojo, and in his place rose an even more fearsome being - a Superman with an inability to truly connect with the mere mortals around him.

I hate how everyone dunks on demon slayer when they are reviewing something when they barely understand anything that the show is obviously telling them. Especially the Captain Mack video. Even basic reading and listening skills would tell you why there isn't a difference. its because the attacks all come from the exact same move set, Sun breathing. Its like complaining that one type of pistol doesn't shoot completely different from the other. Additionally, all they have is swords. Its not unexpected that they all use a flurry of sword strikes as attacks. Most of the time, its all they can do.

Just because there's an explanation, doesn't mean it's a good one. The show emphasizes multiple times that breathing styles are adapted to the user's ability and personality. But it's never clear how that makes any difference. That's 101 fantasy writting: every style needs a weakness.
@pauljrechezona312629 күн бұрын
@@davisantos3431 don't lie yes it showed exactly how. Answer me this.....what is the difference between tengens sound breathing and shinobu's insect breathing? They CLEARLY show the differences and advantages of each breathing styles. There is a clear advantage of zentisu thunder breathing speed in contrast to water breathing easiness and defense (watch tangiro parry guytaro's blood blades) So don't come here with outright lies as an legit critique without any examples
@davisantos343129 күн бұрын
@@pauljrechezona3126 Shinobu is a different case because she says she's physically weak, so it's not specific to her style. Zenitsu is also a different case because HE specifically perfected the first form to be ultra, mega, blazing, jumbo fast (despite every character looking just as fast as the other). But what is the difference between water breathing, mist breathing, wind breathing and fire breathing? If it wasn't for the visual effects you would NEVER know. What's a weakness that is specific to fire breathing? Or water breathing? There is none. It's not a problem to like the show at all, I recognize the merits even thoung I don't particularly enjoy it, but don't try to pretend like it's more than what it actually is. The story is incredibly shallow and there's a huge overreliance on flashbacks and blunt exposition. Character development is nowhere to be found: Tanjiro is exactly the same person from beginning to end, aside from physical improvements. The last season finale is 50% exposition already. In the short fight scene with Gyomei, there's a crescendo in the soundtrack that has such a huge and sharp increase in volume, I actually thought there was something wrong with my headphones. And I repeat: there's nothing wrong with a spectacle. And I respect Demon Slayer for raising the bar so much on the production aspect. But it is primarily that: a spectacle.

Fate appocrypha actually has one of my favorite finale fight of every anime. They really showed what would happens if either side win and both the main protagonist and villain has their own goal and character. Most bad fights are usually about characters trying to win their opponent but not what's behind. In KmY ss1, the 2 best fight are both Tanjiro trying to protect his sister so he really have a goal. But fights like one with the drum demon is just straight up a "I want to win" fight which is much less exciting.

So basically, you are just talking about the series vs each other in general for the power systems/fights. Which I'm sure we agree. But, I mean, there is a reason why the Demon Slayers fight (we know which one) is considered one of the best animations of all time, they literally won awards. JJK is dope, DS isn't even in my top 5, but that fight was godly BECAUSe of UFO. JJK's fights can be more interesting, and has characters I care more about, but DS clears MAPPA's works animation/style wise, including JJK. I mean dude, UFO's fate series was considered and still is considered some of the best animated fights. UFO incorporates cgi and 2d together so well that you really don't notice. Anytime there is CGI in JJK it stands out like a sore thumb. UFO literally makes DS popular. That says a lot.

My favorite fight scene by far is from Fate/Kaleid, Illya versus Saber. It probably doesn't mean as much to a random watcher, but as someone who read the original Fate/Stay Night VN and read Fate/Zero before the anime came out, it was like the author saying, "This might be a magical girl anime, but it's still Fate." There are no real deep character motivations. One character is an aggressive doll that exists to mindlessly kill, and the other just wants to survive. But it foreshadows so much.

I think the central question that any fight scene needs to answer in its own way is, "why does this matter?" The fight itself then presents its actual argument visually as an answer to this question. The reception to any given fight scene will almost always be tied to how much the scene got us to care about what was happening on screen. The components of fight scenes talked about in a video like this one are essentially tools in the creators' toolbox and the tools they go about using to craft the scene can be utilized fully or not as much depending on what the creators' wish for the viewers to be drawn to. The fight scene in question can still be amazing even if the creators chose to not place emphasis on every tool they had at their disposal. Sometimes if you try to utilize a tool that you don't have mastery over, you can ruin the overall product by forcing yourself to include something that if utilized effectively could have added greater depth but simply wasn't. To give a picture of what I am talking about, a person can build a birdhouse with wood, nails, a saw, and a hammer. They can use these tools to craft an excellent birdhouse that serves its function well. Another person could build another great birdhouse, but also make use of a power saw, paint, screws, and wood glue. The birdhouse could end up just as great and just as functional even if there were a greater variety of tools utilized to create it. What you don't want to do is sloppily use a tool you aren't confident will help you build the birdhouse you wish to create just because you think it might add another dimension to the house if by doing so you compromise the house's overall integrity. That's the way I view a fight scene. A min maxed fight scene can often times be far better than a more well rounded fight scene that doesn't execute on every component to the same extent that the min maxed scene does on its one or two elements of focus. Theoretically if you could execute on every component at a 10/10 level then you might be able to surpass the min maxed fight scene, but I would argue the more components you seek to utilize in constructing any given scene the harder it is to give each of those components the level of focus needed to execute on them all at a 10/10 level. All of this is before even getting to the idea that different people will often care/place higher emphasis on one component of a fight scene than another (a 9/10 Viewer Experience could matter more to any individual person than a 9/10 in Directing).
