The Difference Between Common Aerial & Satellite Coaxial TV Wallplates

This video show the difference between most common aerial and satellite coaxial wall plates used that are used in most domestic and communal IRS TV systems.
After watching this video you will able to identify most different types of aerial sockets and what purposes they serve, together with being able to choose your own coaxial wall plates.

Hello! I have the last quad wall plate in my flat and a single gang female coax socket in bedroom (I believe it's called Slave). Anyhow now that I added a TV in the bedroom as well I want to get freeview+free sat (via TV runners) on both lounge and bedroom. My understanding is that if I connect a cable between Sat2 and Return and then connect a combiner/diplexer in the bedroom from which coax for TV and coax for sat go to bedroom TV should work, while lounge tv will be connected to TV socket and to Sat1. I don't have the cables yet but tried to connect a simple cable between the Radio port and the Return port, then the bedroom with a simple coaxial cable in the RF port of the TV got about 55% signal strength and 100% quality. I then connected a cable between Sat2 and Return and again the Freeview TV was similar but lacked the HD channels. I then tested with Sat1 and return and it worked great, all channels available on Freeview. Unfortunately I don't know what to make if this.. I thought the signals were combined and then split in the quad wall plate, how can the signal of Satelite or Radio fuel the Freeview reception? Can I watch Freeview and freesat on both TV's? Will I need a combiner in bedroom or maybe just a simple splitter? Should I change the flimsy poundland coax cables with webro ones?

What socket and cable would you recommend for running virgin media coaxial? I need to run cable from front of the house to back, but I want it done properly and not clipped to skirting board. We are going to do a full electrical rewire anyway so it makes sense to do it properly.

Is there a way to terminate satellite cables with a wall-plate to ensure I can use Sky Q in the future. In my new house the builders left three satellite cables from between the loft and the lounge sticking out of the wall. Would I lose signal strength if I put a wall plate on?

Hi Tom . Good video , for the last tv plate you spoke about , just want to confirm you would have 2 cable from the sky dish and 1 cable going to another room . But then to send the signal to the other room am i correct to asume you have to put a link between the return tv module to the quadplexer ?

Yes that's right, these plates used to be popular for Sky playback systems where the Sky box had an in and two outs. Otherwise you will need a link lead to connect other room(s), or if you wanted to keep the aerial in the main room also a 2 way splitter or amplifier will also be needed.

Hi Heidi. Sorry for the slow response. Yes it can be done. I would recommend using two F modules for the satellite cables and one coax module for the aerial. You will also require a 2 gang surround and back box to house these. If done this way there will be a spare module space so you will also require a filler module insert. I hope this helps. Tom

Hi John, it seems like it should be a common thing but it isn't. You could just install a single screened socket and insert and plug-in two way splitter.

Hi am in a new build house i have no digital aerial on the roof but i have tv wall points in each room for freeview, can i get sky dish and use the tv point in each room for freesat or do the need to change wall plate to f connector

Hey Guarav. It's best to change for F type wallplates if you can but they would be fine to use as long as they are not isolated wallplates as this will stop the voltage from your satellite receiver reaching your LNB. Obviously you would need appropriate flyleads also. Tom

Hi yes, if you get a two gang modular plate and build it up with separate modules (2x F for Sky Q) that will work, you will lose your TV aerial connection if you do it this way though if and if you use one. Alternatively, you could make Sky Q work with this plate but the Sky Q signals would need to be converted to dSCR signals and the box set up in SCR mode, but this is quite a bit more complicated. Can you explain or do a vid on installing the aerial, satellite & hdmi sockets/feeds/faceplates like you did for your tv on the wall please. I'm about to dot & dab plasterboard on my chimney breast to stick my tv on and I'm pulling my hair out trying to get my head around how the cables will end up coming out the wall, maybe as a socket on the wall or flying connectors that would look bad and like you said having them all fed from an input faceplate where my sky box, freeview recorder & xbox will be. Dot & dabbing will give me the gap I need for the cables but need to know what to terminate them into. Thanks

Yes it's fine, is only a problem when one of the signals is too strong but that is not often the case.

I am trying to sort out a problem in an apartment block where I have no satellite signal through the diplexer wall plate, but I do have the terrestrial signal. I have a roof installed "Digital" Aerial to feed a TV with built in freeview. I'd very much like to use a satellite face plate to link to my set because it has the more sturdy f-type fitting, especially as the set will be mounted on a pull out and tilt style bracket. Can I do that; or must it be the normal TV outlet? Thanks

Hey, yes no problem you can use the satellite plate for TV aerial signals. If it's going up behind the TV on the wall you may want to get some right angle F adapters too. Tom

It won't work Manish. To do what you want to do, you will need a Multi-switch amp, not a loft box. 4 cables in from the satellite dish, one cable in for terrestrial TV. From here you run 2 separate direct cables (no splitters) into the Quadplexed wall-plates. This means that to support four separate TV points for examples with Quadplexed plates, you would need an 8 way multi-switch amp. There are other ways of doing things but it's going to be too difficult to summarise/ explain. Please also note that the multi-switch suggested below is not compatible with Sky Q.
