Crusher run is only mildly dusty once it gets compacted. It's one of the cheapest bases you can buy and also the most effective.

I like using a 1-2” layer of 3/4 Clean to dress the top of the driveway. 3/4 Clean does not have all the dust and fines in it, 3/4 Minus does. So heads up if you’re new to this.

Crusher run WILL wash out on ANY incline with a hard rain! It's a good base but I need heavier rocks like #57, or heavier, that won't wash away in moderate rainfall...

As somebody who's owned a rather steep gravel driveway for 25 years, I can tell you that crusher run is nice to keep graded and for regular passenger cars to drive on. What it is *not* good for is staying in place during summer storms - rain washes crusher run off pretty easily. We really don't have much choice but to use 57 stone (3/4"), especially on steeper parts of our road. - Ed on the Ridge

Hate to differ with you but my experience is different. The base layer I use is always the bigger stone, all the way up to 3-4" with no fines. This is topped with 1.75" to fill the voids and lock the big rock in place. On top of that goes the 5/8" with fines to build a very smooth cemented together surface. Here in the far NE Washington state area the soil is clay. Small rock simply sinks into it and is gone forever without providing a benefit. The best solution is to use road fabric to stop everything from sinking into the mud.

In Florida the process is similar but not the same. It's all about the soil you have in the area or lack of it and the materials you have to work with. Here, all we have is crushed cement or limestone. 57 rock is our best bet for top layer since it rains so much. In other areas people would never use crushed cement (1 1/4 minus) as a base layer but here it's used all the time on top of 3 to 4 inch rock to create a base and then 57 rock (3/4 clean) on top of that.

3/4 can compact under the right circumstances. I have heavy dump trucks driving on my driveway and it does compact down but it doesn’t really cement together like crusher run

The biggest benefit of 3/4 is you don’t get the mud slinging up like you do with crusher run , it also hides the water on the road better

@@BRIANVANDUYNI made a driveway out of crusher run and have no mud slinging around. I park a log truck on that weighs 21,000 lbs when loaded. The benefit of 3/4 is it looks a lot better, but because it doesn't compact, heavier vehicles create ruts if it's layered too thick.

Will laying a thin layer of 3/4 on top of crush help it with running water? Part of my driveway is going to have a dip in it which may have running water through it in heavy rain. I'm trying to keep from using concrete and it's too small for a culvert.
@stevenferro
@stevenferro 2 жыл бұрын
over time water and heavy rain ruins everything. You haven't really given enough information for someone to give you good advice. It sounds like you need a small culvert with small headwalls at inlet to prevent erosion. If you can't do this then maybe look into placing excavating, placing geotextile to prevent weeds, placing riprap or 4" clear stone, then placing geotextile again and then placing your driveway granular on top. If you do this the water will run right through your rip rap area which is sandwiched between the earth and your driveway so it's held in very tight and the big stones wont move. Also, you can always use a culvert you just need to build the driveway up over a longer distance.

is 3/4&2"Crushrun mix good for drainage? I don't want a bunch of water chilling under my pavers then freezing and lifting them all up or should I just do 3/4 clear and HPB especially because I dont own a gas compactor plate.

Ditto...would also like to know. I would like to install this under artificial turf in a contained area bit worried about drainage and pooling water.
@stevenferro
@stevenferro 2 жыл бұрын
@@HuyTran-tc8cw crusher run is not good for drainage because you are taking a giant rock and crushing so you basically get stones/grains of every size. This means all the gaps are filled. If you only get stones of 1 size it means that there are a lot of gaps so this will drain. You should be using HPB which is high performance base under you pavers because it doesn't compact and it drains very well and it is very strong even though it doesn't compact.
@stevenferro
@stevenferro 2 жыл бұрын
it's very important that when you are finished excavating and before you place the gravel you have to slope the subgrade. This way water that gets into your granular base will drip down until it his the subgrade and then because the subgrade is sloped it will run to the sides and you can keep your granular base dry. Make sure that it doesn't pond once it drains to the sides of your driveway. You need a way for that to drain out.

You have to perform a proctor test to find that out. Every gravel is slightly different so you can't just use the same density for all crushed stone. it's usually around 2300kg/m3

Crusher run and 3/4 limestone are the same thing. In order to get 3/4 limestone you have to crush it. Your nomenclature is very laymen like and you aren't explaining what's going on here. The difference between the two gravels that you are showing is that the second one has all the fines washed out of them. When you call something 3/4 gravel or 3/4 limestone gravel you are just naming the largest size of the stone. So that's why I am saying that 3/4 crusher run is the same as 3/4 gravel. The only difference is that someone told the gravel pit that when they order 3/4 gravel they don't want any grains of gravel less than 5mm or 1/8" in the mix. That's the important part of all this. Now with this information you can go to any gravel pit and order exactly what you want. If you go to any gravel pit and order 3/4 limestone all you are doing is saying that you want limestone type gravel and the largest size of the stone is 3/4". Unless there is a standard in your area, you are going to get a slightly different product where every you go because some placed will make the cut off point at the low end at 1/8" or 1/16' etc. What you are missing is the gradation curve for gravel. google it and you will understand.
