I get what joe is saying but he’s trying to hard to discredit the fact that Wayne probably mentor’d tf out of drake and taught him how to move so he don’t end up like Wayne. Yea drake is a half white popstar but pop stars get fucked by the music industry too. Drake is where he’s at because he makes great music and does everything in his power to keep a pristine image to the public. That’s the difference

What was left out of conversation was the connections Drake has that Wayne doesn’t. Drake was also signed to J Prince’s son. That is how Drake stiff armed his way out of Cash Money. Wayne did not have that. Wayne wasn’t going anywhere.

What joe is missing is that drake had a bad deal by today's standards but no where near the lil wayne signed at 11 in the 90''s kind of bad deal. He had more leverage and had insane offers from every label before he signed with young money. He was also an actor and older so he didn't just sign blindly. The problem with drake's contract is multiple people having a cut ie wayne, baby, universal, and j prince but it wasn't a typical slave deal or 360. Times have changed with social media and streaming. Way more bigger artists are able to renegotiate their deals then in the past but joe is still right to some degree about the race and skin tone thing he is implying.

Rory definitely has a point. It's likely Drake learned how *not* to navigate through Wayne's situation. The former isn't linked to Birdman like the latter, so that could explain the differences in trajectory. I *can* see where Joe was heading, though. There are plenty of factors to consider before jumping straight to colorism (Drake being Jewish probably helped him though, as sterotypical as it sounds) imo. Drake and Wayne came up under different circumstances and maintained different brands- and marketability, by extension.
@lionel85544 жыл бұрын
Insightful thought bro. I feel where you’re coming from. So you think Drake being part Jewish gives him doors and opportunities Wayne didn’t have? The epitome of Hip Hop is to be from the hood and talk about that life and be about that life. Think of 50 cent for example he became fifty because of his lack of privilege. Why is it that Drake somehow got passes in the industry that Wayne wouldn’t or couldn’t if Nothing else but the fact that Drake avoided certain pitfalls that Wayne had to suffer?
@ctredez20474 жыл бұрын
@@lionel8554 It's hard for me to confidently say his opportunities are *solely* because of his Jewish background, because a factor that's just as significant is the fact that Drake came up in the acting industry. He probably had some foundation of management and industry experience before he was seriously invested in the game. Whereas Lil Wayne, while he came up under an iconic label, may not have had that same type of network; at least not at a similar stage in his career compared to Drake, you know what I mean? There's mad factors in the differences in their careers though, forsake. A legitimate deep-dive comparison would require a lot of nuance.

Wayne had more connections than almost any rapper. CM had crazy buzz so as a teenager Wayne was able to sit back and learn/listen. When he was ready, he already had one of the biggest labels around him. I dont know why people act like Lil Wayne was an independent artist who grinded out alone to get to the top, he had a machine around him. CM waa already worth 20-30M when they signed to Universal.
