Each one of them pushed Suleiman to the edge even when he gave them numerous opportunities. Mustafa constantly disregarded his decisions and mostly fought with Suleiman over women ironically accusing him of being Hurrem's lackey, Selim because of his drinking and wastefulness and Bayezid by being dumb and impatient even though Suleiman directly told him that Bayezid is the one who is closest to his own personality and both him and Hurrem hinted at Bayezid being their choice of successor. It's no surprise Suleiman loved Mehmet so much, the only son that did whatever he wanted and didn't argue or question any of his decisions. While Mustafa was stuck up and whining on being sent to Amasya, Mehmet accepted being sent to the same place without complaints realising the strategic importance of the province and what it means for a prince to be able to govern such a place successfully.

However, they were both heirs of an empire with a law to kill the same heirs to prevent civil war. You cannot expect them to sit still and not plot for the throne because getting the throne is they best way they can ensure their own survival. It's not good or bad just a way of survival for them. They are both infamous because of their executions which are historically accurate facts. The rest are speculation and stories made to glorify princes who couldn't make it especially in the case of Mustafa whose poems and stories were written by Tasclicali of Yahya who was his close companion. Henceforth, it would be a biased account anyways. Also, no Ottoman prince especially a 30 + year old and the oldest living heir like Mustafa would be as naive as they portray him in the show. Perhaps in real life Mustafa must have thought that Suleiman would die soon as he was already in his late 50s and as Mustafa was already the popular choice amongst the army and scholars he would easily succeed to the throne. Unfortunately, for him and even as a monarch of 16th century Suleiman lived an unusually long life. As sad it is, fathers and sons were rivals in Ottoman Empire. The birth of a son poses a threat to the life of the father. They can and have been used against each other by others vying for power. We can't view those times with modern day lenses.
