23:00 I think part of it is the fact that the games teach you that combat is a punishment. The routes have a ton of spinners and paths to avoid trainers that teach newer players that combat with trainers is something that happens when you mess up.

If I were designing the Pokemon games... 1) Monotype gym leaders, but ace Pokemon should be native to the region and try to show off what the new Pokemon can do 2) Gym leaders can be fought in any order but the team they use depends on how many badges you have. 3) Boss trainers (Gym leaders/E4/Champ) should have access to TMs/Egg moves etc. early game gym leaders will stick to the TM that they give out, later trainers will use more variety of TMs 4) E4 trainers will be strategy based rather than type based. You master type match-ups by beating the gyms and then you have to learn actual strategy to become champion. 5) EVs/IVs on boss trainers - doesn't need to be "optimal" spreads, but something with some thought. Unique trainers should feel unique in their teams. Aqua Admins Matt and Shelly from RSE were basically glorified grunts. Why they did not have Huntail and Gorebyss respectively as their aces is beyond me. Magma could have maybe used Torkoal and maybe Aggron as admin aces. But the point is that more creativity could be put into the gym leaders' characters. SV did a better job with this as gym leaders are like real people that do stuff and have some cool team choices that are flavorful even if not the most powerful. Although I still have no idea why TPC seems to be obsessed with having late game Ice gyms which doesn't even show off the new snow mechanic basically at all. Where was slush rush Cetitan on Grusha's team? I don't need every gym fight to be a run ender like Whitney or Clair, but every gym should have something to make it a memorable fight. The SV grass gym with the Tera Grass Sudowoodo was simply classic! And it gives him actual coverage for Fire and flying types!

The Iono fight is still my fave gym in S/V cause I rolled up with a few good ground types expecting to win easily, wiped her early pokemon and then got _destroyed_ by her Tera Electric Levitating Misdreavus. Not super tough on the runback but on that first run I got blown out and it ruled.

For what it's worth, some games do have E4s and bosses with IVs and EVS. Def agree with the rest, though and I'd go one step beyond E4 should have truncated versions of common gimmicks like Trick Room, Weather, Terrain, and even stuff like Stall or Webs

To be honest, I like the current pokemon battle system vastly more than any weird 3D real time version you can could come up with. I think the battle system is one of Pokemon's greatest strengths, and the reason that it hasn't changed much is that the core of the system is already excellent.

yup, like some people said in other comments, the problem is not the battle system itself but rather the fact that they don't put in hard battles in game, not even the boss fights are hard mostly, so that's where the issue is

Ditto has tech in this game with a glitch and rage. Basically use transform to a Pokémon with rage like onyx from earlier route, use rage, the defeat other Pokémon with a different move and then you keep the moveset. Still niche but gives you more than transform. Main use of this was more for passing impossible egg moves.

The weird thing about Dragon Age is that between the first and second game, the combat system doesn't actually change that much compared to the third game, but when the second game came out, the sky was falling. And the combat in the third game isn't actually that different from the first two compared with the complete genre shift that the combat for the fourth game got, but when the third game came out, the sky was falling. And now that the fourth game is out, the sky is also falling.

People care a lot about the battles. But in a sense that they want to not be too challenged by them. They want their nice and cozy, sometimes a bit challenging strategic combat, and I actually think that they are greatly balanced for the average player (same with the AI). So people want their nice and battles to be as they are, and that not that many people are talking about it (outside of people who are doing PvP battles) speaks for them being just good as they are (for the majority of players).

Main series Pokemon titles have like 95% of their difficulty packed into the boss battles, and most of those are very beatable due to either poorly developed teams, monotype teams or bad/abusable AI. All the regular battles are glorified EXP dispensers, so if you hack in candies to bypass grinding, you're not incentivized to do any of the battles and they just feel like filler. Nowhere is this more evident than when you're in the final gauntlet against the evil team and still facing teams of 2-3 unevolved Pokemon that are 10 or more levels below you. That's why I've stopped touching main series games. ROM hacks, mods, and fan-games are how I get my Pokemon fix now. I also wish more such games would adopt something like the Field Effects from Reborn and Rejuvenation, but that's just me.

I think a lot of people really care about the combat system in Pokémon. Wolfey has one of the biggest Pokémon channels and that content is hyper focused on the ins and outs of combat

Sure, but his channel is focused on competitive vgc double battles where its a human vs human. The games pve battles are 90% forgettable trainers who spam the same 15 pokemon at you with braindead AI. There is a reason why so many people only remember the big fights, i.e. gym leaders, e4, champ, rivals, evil teams and such

@@frosty980 That is true as well, although if it happened people would either adapt or stay on the older games. They have the ability to make the vanilla pve fights interesting, diversifying pokemon and movesets, making special AI for trainers, giving out other rewards for battling can all help. Its a big reason why ace trainers in sun/moon stand out to me, you get TM's or useful items after beating them and they usually have a unique/rare pokemon with an actual strategy. They still werent that difficult but at least its a start lol

The radioactive dumpster fire that is Scarlet and Violet got me thinking why I even like Pokémon in the first place. It sure isn't the fights, like Jan said, they have always been bad. So what? I narrowed it down to 3 elements Pokémon always did great: -The design of the creatures. They are both cute and badass in a way no other clones managed to reproduce so far -The environmental storytelling. Every region has little secrets and the routes are always fun to traverse -The sense of adventure. Discovering a new world with your little pets helping you along the way is just fun Everything other than that could be trash and people would still play Pokémon. In fact, this is the state of the franchise since at least B2W2, and arguably has always been the case. Scarlet and Violet just took it to an extreme with the N64 graphics, popping, crashes, the bad level curve etc

From personal experience (I'm italian), it's mostly being self-taught. I don't exactly know the specifics of Jan's life, but as another bilingual European, the english taught in our school system is the most basic shit ever, so you either teach yourself through the years or it's kinda impossible to be fluent in it.
