Hey guys! In this video, I go into detail about all of the differences between Jurassic Park's Game Warden, Robert Muldoon and Jurassic World's Raptor Expert, Owen Grady. I'll also be using a little bit of Steven Spielberg's Jaws for good measure! This analyzes every aspect of Jurassic World's Velociraptor training as well as the Velociraptor mishandling done by the original film's Wildlife Expert. It's basically a Jurassic Park vs. Jurassic World sort of video told in a conventional and realistic way as to what may go down in real life. Hope you all enjoy it and hope you're excited to see Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom! :D

While I agree with you whole heartedly, it might be worth nothing that velociraptors were a brand new animal when Muldoon had to handle them. They had no idea how they would act and react to certain environments, so a level of distance was the wisest choice. Owen handled them amazingly but to an extent it was down to the lessons learned from the first movie. Owen and the other handlers would already know what they were capable of because of these previous events. Muldoon didn’t have that luxury.

I think Owens raptors were designed with more tameable traits as well. Remeber that both Hostkins and Wu wanted to use them for military purposes, that was the hidden idea behind the raptor program anyway..so altering their genom to be more reciprical to being tamed isnt far fetched..its stated in the books that Wu CAN make them more docile but Hammond didnt want him to. It would make sense from the stand point if Wu and Hotskins..they were testing the raptors seeing which combination of genetics would result in the best Raptor for war...this is probbaly why none of Ownes raptors are the same they all have distinct looks possibly as a result of different test genomes.

I think somethings to bear in mind are; 1- Muldoon had no sources that he could research on the raptors. Undoubtedly Grady will have done a lot of research into the animals and other similar dinosaurs and modern animals, whereas at the time of JP1 there was nothing that could be researched into the raptors as no one could actually know what their behaviour would be like. 2- Muldoon was not a raptor handler, he was head warden, and therefore had many responsibilities, if there was an issue with an animal Muldoon was there sorting it out, as with Rexy in the comics, meaning he would not have had time to build any sort of relationship with any of the animals. Grady on the other hand was head raptor trainer. Grady's entire job was the raptors, spending time with them and attempting to train them, which obviously is the reason he could build such a strong relationship with the raptors. If Grady couldn't have put time into the raptors, the same way Muldoon could not, then I think Grady would have had a far different outcome from his interactions with the animals.

@Peder Hansen Are you implying that training wild animals is "Hollywood bs"? The US Navy is able to train dolphins and there are people with no military background that is able to tame crocodiles, lions, bears, wolves, and even komodo dragons.

@Daniel Sayce I have a point of view I would like to share: What also happened that I think made a big difference is that in JP1, they infused frog DNA where there are holes in the Dino DNA. Frogs are difficult to tame, switched sexes on you when you wanted to have them only female, and eat everything that moves and fits in its mouth. I believe that if the Velociraptors were infused with bird blood, they would be much easier to tame. In the JWorld series, the velociraptors there had red eyes similar to goshawks, which are a type of raptor that is commonly trained to cooperate with humans by falconers. IDK if they were already infused with bird blood giving them eyes like that but I think that it made them easier to train for Owen. I think Muldoon had the disadvantage of training with an intelligent amphibian-instinct velociraptor, while Owen had it easier by understanding how birds behave. I would love Velociraptors infused with modern raptor DNA. Preferably Harris hawks because they are also pack hunting raptors that are the easiest to tame and handle in the falconry community.

@@imgvillasrc1608 yes, but they require a full-time job to do that successfully, and even then people still get killed by 'tame' animals all the time. He had more time and experience with this specific species is all

After his death in real life, it always hurt me to re-watch that scene where his "Robert Muldoon" character is killed by that raptor. At the very least, he had an iconic weapon; a lever action rifle. Which most people have seen thanks to Cowboy movies, and those that look into it find out that 45-70 is probably a better bullet when compared to the SPAS-12's 12 gauge slug. So Owen's choice is a fairly decent choice if there was a situation that called for him to hunt a raptor. Not just that, but the SPAS-12 while iconic and badass, also had some issues, issues that could have been death sentences. Meanwhile Owen's Marlin had no such issues, besides being underpowered against T-Rex sized animals or Owen not firing at the Indominus Rex's head before he ran out of ammo.

They are two entirely different characters in my opinion. Owen cares for them and wants them to treated with respect. Muldoon believes "they should all be destroyed". It all comes down to their personal experiences with them. Owen basically raised the raptors, while Muldoon was just an over-seer, watching their primitive wrath play out while feeding or attempting to escape.

I think it would have been interesting to see Muldoon if he’d had the opportunity to learn more about and work with raptors. Owen had the chance to imprint and work with the raptors; he also had access to knowledge about the raptors from what was learned between Jurassic Park and the time of his employment. I think working with the raptor squad also gave Owen experience from which he could form his own opinions. Just my thoughts! Another great video!!

I don’t think Muldoon would of trusted them no matter what. He was screwed as soon as he was left alone because the other person had managed to run away from the spot. Both Grady and Muldoon had their own strengths when it came to wildlife behavior. Grady was definitely more adept at handling the raptors but to be fair, at the time when Muldoon was alive, there was very little information about the raptors due largely to a lack of study and research. A lot of problems on Isla Nublar could've been avoided if the scientists had done some in depth wildlife research on Isla Sorna before even thinking about creating Jurassic Park. If they had just turned the dinosaurs loos on Sorna and observed their behavior from infant to adult, they would've had a deeper understanding of the animals and would've been better equipped to contain them.

I think they were too busy popping out dinosaurs as fast as they could than study them. They practically had a toxic plant with a triceratops and didn’t even consider some new plants could be fatal to dinosaurs. It took an archeologist who has no real training on extinct creature to figure out the plants were making it sick.

And not without good reason. In the book, Muldoon saw how they could figure out how to escape their paddock and that they developed a taste for human flesh. Add to that their viscous nature and Muldoon rightly saw them as the uncontrollable killers they are. It further proves Hammond's hubris and how out of touch he was with the reality of the park. Muldoon wanted gun emplacements and LAW missiles to contain any escapees, but InGen balked at anything that would kill their "investments."

Well as long as we're going just off the movies I think Robert was better than Owen not because he didn't have as much knowledge as Owen but he was the first person to do this with zero knowledge of how the raptors acted, thought, or hunted. By the time jurassic world hits the screen Owen would presumably have 3 park incidents to learn from assuming Grant or Malcolm wrote books about their experiences.

I have to completely agree with you on the which one was better with raptors. Thou i feel overall with other animals on the park. Muldoon ((more his book character than movie but even so)) was more experienced with a more diverse role than owen. From what we saw owen really was only there for the raptors. While Muldoon showed a knowledge on how to hunt and recontain the animals if they got out. Along with a good knowledge on the dinosaurs as a whole ((we see this more in the book but since they are relatively the same person we can somewhat conclude)) i love both characters but i feel they fit different niches

My problem with Muldoon, bad ass that he was, has always been his approach right before he died. He was supposed to be this bad ass African hunter, but he couldn't be bothered to have his weapon at the ready for when he found his prey. It took him what seemed like forever to lock the stock on his shotgun in place after he saw the raptor dead ahead in the bushes. Not to mention, for someone who was supposed to know a lot about these animals, the fact he was being led into a trap never occurred to him? Get outta here.

First off, these are genetically altered hybrid dinosaurs that no one truly knew the full extent of, not even a seasoned African outback hunter. Secondly he had his shotgun folded to conceal and keep it from getting in the way as he marched through the foliage and thirdly he wasn’t some super human like Jurassic world has pumped out with Owen, he was an actual character with flaws. He was overzealous and undermined the Raptors, he kept calm till the end but that didn’t stop his inevitable demise.

Poor Muldoon has been getting a bad rap ever since Jurassic World came out and showed that the raptors could be trained. I don't think anyone can logically deny that Owen's approach was better, but in Muldoon's defense no one had ever seen a raptor in the flesh and they couldn't have known what to expect. I imagine Hammond would have raised an eyebrow if Muldoon tried taming and bonding with the raptors. Besides, Muldoon was hired to be a park warden, not a specialized raptor trainer. Owen was hired for that specific job, and for nefarious reasons. Muldoon is still my fave character from Jurassic Park, it's a shame he has retroactively become a sort of anti-hero because of Jurassic World

I think you are right about quite a bit. I would also like to point out that Jurassic Park came out at a time when the advantages of using primarily (if not entirely) positive reinforcement was not as well known or mainstream for the viewing public. You can see this in the much higher amount of shock collars and choke collars that were used in training dogs or, if you want to go with something more of the same level as Jurassic Park would have been, the iconic image of the tiger and the whip that was common at that time compared to now. Animal control and training has changed a lot over the past decades.
@Alrik.

Of course Owen is the better raptor handler, but if you look at the timeline Muldoon might not be too bad either. Animal handling in general has become more "humane" and less treating them as beasts since the early 90's and in universe, he was one of the first people to ever work with these animals, and they'd been studied for decades already when it was Owen's turn to handle them

Experience.. it's all about the experiences made in the first one ... I wouldn't be surprised when Owen didn't do the things he did with the Raptors in JW when they never had Raptors in the first place. .. Robert just got to work with animals no one has ever seen before... It's always easier to understand something based on the mistakes made by someone else..

They say the big one killed all the others but two. How ever there where shots clearly heard at the end of that containment scene. You can't tell that a raptor could take multiple point blank shots of 5.56 and 12ga buck or more likely slugs without severe, most likely fatal injure. It is possible that the 'Big One' killed off the wounded raptor. However I think Muldoon may have had more then likely hand, probably for good reason, in death of the siblings then movie alluded to. Look at his death scene. They set up a false ambush site to allure him to the actual kill site. The big one made sure he seen it coming. This tell me that they knew Muldoon himself was capable and dangerous well as this attack was personal. The fact the other raptor held it's position even after the attack was initiated is curious in itself and could lend itself to my previous stated Theory.

I like this. They’d definitely know he was. Him being so worried about them, I bet he made frequent visits to their holding pen. And I smart as they were, after watching Muldoons interactions with the guards and other personnel, I bet the Big One deduced Muldoon was the pack alpha of the humans.

Agree with your second part, although the first part I don't. It could be just that they fired that many shots at the one raptor just to put it down quickly and make sure it stayed down.
@noooneofimportance
@noooneofimportance 6 жыл бұрын
Bazgoth Ar I agree that is a high possibility but they way they made it sound later in the movie the Big One was responsible for ALL of the siblings deaths but two. They made no mention of the park wardens having to put any down. If we can all agree that they put at least one down then that means that they where lying in that scene. Remember they where trying to convince the guest that this park was safe for operation. perhaps they were afraid that if they mentioned that they had to put some of the animals down that Alan, Ellie, and Malcolm would instantly blacklist it. Now that I think about it did they even mention to the above Trio that a person had died?

The raptors during Muldoons time were species that hadn't lived for many years.. How could he be expected to control or understand a creature that had only just began to start living again.. Raptors would have been studied and researched years before the opening of JW so Owen would be more at an advantage.. Also he bonded with them from an early age.. So of course Owen would be superior.. I still have respect for Muldoon tho..

Like in real life, as more knowledge regarding certain animal species is acquired, better tecniques are developed on how to handle with them in certain situations. Like you said: Owen basically had the advantage of being dealing with an animal that was now more studied and understood, in comparison to Muldoon, who was dealing with an animal which had never been dealt with by any human. The aproach made by each man is a reflection of their way of looking at the animals but also of what they knew about them (an area on which Owen puts Muldoon on a corner, not simply, but foremost by being 20 years on the future). Also, I wouldn't call the JP dinosaurs"animals". As much as I like the movies, they're basically genetic aberrations, mixed with only-god-knows what's DNA. I believe Alan's words in the lecture in the beggining of JP3 regarding them, remain the truest: "Genetically engineered Theme Park monsters. Nothing more and nothing else".

He didn't treat them like mindless monsters though. He states in the film that "They show extreme intelligence, even problem solving intelligence", he clearly understands how intelligent they are, how dangerous they are. He handled them in the best way he knew how, to keep them locked up, behind plenty of security. He wouldn't have been allowed to kill them because of their financial worth, the only thing he could do was isolate them

Funny how you mentioned Quint. I found Muldoons character from the book to be alot like Robert Shaws version of Quint. Muldoon in the book was a bit of a drinker. And had an screw or 2 loose. Muldoon in the movie was scared shitless of the Raptors. His death was because he was way too focused on killing the Raptors than looking deep in at them and studing them like Owen did. "They should all be destroyed." He sees the one Raptor and is like " kill it kill it Kill it." Not where's the other two Raptors.

This is an interesting analysis. I feel the initial batch of Raptors might have been psychotic based on book and film descriptions of their behavior in comparison to the other dinosaurs. Muldoon saw this and it did color his opinions of them. Also since the Raptors were always fed in their pen(with only one escape killing someone in the novel before the JP incident) Muldoon doesn't have working knowledge of them in a hunting scenario, which led to his film death.

I just want to bring up Owen Grady's quote on the indominus, which clicked when you talked about the cow. "You left her in here with no outside contact and the only thing she has to look forward to is that crane." Then something about "you turned her into a monster." (because of the way it was raised) This could go a bit towards explaining why the OG raptors were little indo's. Also, the raptor killed her siblings, much like the indominus did. A little bit of Ret-splaining for those that are paying attention.

I absolutely agree. Even though i Like Muldoon, it seems to me like he didn't like working at Jurassic Park but accepted the Job since Hammond saw him as a top-notch man.. I have the Impression that some time after he started to Work at JP he realized what he's gotten himself into and since then just reacted by instinct (survival and protection) rather than logical. To simplify it Muldoon was more of a Classic Zookeeper while Grady is an Animal Trainer. On the other hand you can't blame Muldoon since he and InGen were stepping foot on unknown territory. To quote Alan Grant: "Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?"

I think all we know is that Owen is a raptor trainer, while Muldoon is a game warden. Owen does his 'behavioral research' and Muldoon is in charge of protecting all dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. These roles also show that Muldoon is the rational guy and Owen bases his actions more on emotion.. we are in 2018 after all and nothing goes without sensationalism.

1: I love any video you release in regards to Muldoon (and/or) the raptors. 2: I think Owen was better with the raptors vs Muldoon because he imprinted on them when they were young AND didn't see them or treat them like his enemies. Muldoon was already a hunter when he started working at Jurassic Park so he may have immediately tried to find weaknesses and strengths of the raptors as a means of 'how do I end them before they end me?' and tried to force his way into dominance. From what I can see it was mainly trial and error/learning as you go with the enclosure being upgraded and having to feed them a certain way. 3: As I'm certain we all know neither Muldoon nor Owen had control over the raptors but we see that Owen's raptors respected him more and held him in somewhat high regard vs Muldoon's raptors who saw seen him as a foe.

So Klayton, which UK cinema are you seeing the movie in? Also are you going to a day one showing? I'll warn you, there are 15 - 20 minutes of ads before the movie and 10 minutes of trailers. It's standard before movies here, be warned. :) I'll be going to my local cinema on release. I'm so excited!

Dude holy crap lol I didn’t even think about it till you brought it up between jaws and Jurassic Park. Both had rich guys who benefited by positive publicity and wanted bad things kept secret. Jaws had the mayor Jurassic Park have John Hammond Self proclaimed hunters/experts Jaws with the boat captain Jurassic Park with the game warden. Both took place on an island. Amity island Isla nublar Both involved kids related to the main protagonist. Jaws had Brody’s kids Jurassic Park has hammonds grand kids Kind of a stretch to say but both movies had impossible monsters Jaws super size/mutated Jurassic Park, cloned dinosaurs. I mean shit i bet you could do an entire movie and comparing both movies. Great work!

As a kid, and seeing JP for the 1st time, I always got upset with Muldoon when he only loaded his Shotgun with one shell. Realizing now he added more shells. Though he still treats'em with lil respect and didn't know how well the raptors were strategic to obtaining the target. He still badass though. Owen was someone new in the JP series, he treats'em with so much respect but is still cautious about them. The raptors are abit different from "The big one"s pack but still have the desire of killing. Still Raptors are Raptors; stealth, intelligent, problem solving, fast, and strategic. Gotta love em! 💚💚💙💙 Always... fantastic Video!
