The Wankel engine was/is basically the reincarnation of the two-stroke engine, regarding it's attributes: fewer parts, more compact, easier to fix, but not-quite-as-reliable-as-promised, and more thirsty.
@doktorbimmer6 жыл бұрын
*The irony here is that the Wankel is a 4-stroke design.. Fewer parts? Not really true, the Mazda Renesis engine for example had over 235 moving and seal related parts alone... and they were more expensive and difficult to manufacture.* *Compact? if we are talking about 1950's motorcycle design (the application that the Wankel was specifically designed for) Maybe? but in terms of automobile design its not significantly more compact and in terms of aircraft design its larger and heavier than equivalent gas turbine engines.* Easier to fix? Well, if that were really true we would see far more old Wankel engines on the road, its a clear case of reliability trumping ease of repair.* _Cheers!_

One works and the other doesn't, anti-matter is just matter with inverted charges, the only special thing about is that it converts itself and matter into pure gamma-rays if it comes into contact with matter. If you somehow were to be able to get a really fast spinning black hole than (theoretically) close to its singularity space-time would bend so much you'd get a closed time-like curve and do things like travel back in time or defy space as we know it.

a few things wrong with this: 1: Rotary engines are very easy to maintain, there is absolutely nothing hard about it at all unless being consistent with standard basic maintenance and adding a bit of oil to your fuel is somehow hard for you then that's on you. 2: The only unreliable thing about a rotary engine is the owner, if the engine fails on you 9.9/10 times it's something that you did (or didn't do) and not the engine's fault. Or may even have been built poorly and/or incorrectly (it happens just like it does with piston engines too). Rotaries do hate boost though, so I won't fault anyone for that (wanna be fast? it won't be reliable. Wanna be reliable? it won't be fast - can be kinda quick though lol). Also something to note is that the old (pre-1986) carbureted rotaries were very reliable, there are still plenty of them running today with up to 400,000 original miles on them. The 13B in my daily driver SA22C is over 40 years old, street ported, makes fairy decent power and torque and came from a junkyard as is and I've put over 20,000 miles on it with no engine related problems at all in the last year that I've owned it (actual car or engine mileage is unknown, ODO is only 5 digits and engine was built in the early 80s and that's all I know). My last RX-7 also had over 261,000 miles on it when it was totaled in an accident and ran great too, so this "unreliable" stigma that rotaries have isn't very well deserved, it's more that it's just not for everyone 3: You can use rotaries in many different applications including aircraft, boating, sandrails hell even RC cars too (and yes there are RC cars with Wankel rotary engines small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and make about 1ish HP lol) Basically what I'm saying is that rotaries are awesome wonderful little engines that deserve more credit that many people aren't very willing to give them. they're simple, easy to maintain, easy to understand and are just plain fun because you can beat the dogshit out of them as much as you want whenever you please (granted that your engine is at operating temp of course). But as I've stated, they're just not for everyone just like pistons aren't for me and that's okay:)

Thank you for this. I have worked on a number of engines, and the cylinder heads have always been concave, not convex as in your diagram. Being concave causes fuel ignition to be 'cupped' leading to a more efficient use of the power stroke. Also may I add, rotary engines have poor breaking performance compared to cylinder engines, requiring a different style to driving.

The idea behind rotary being unreliable is spread by jackasses who don't know how to treat it. They do require more care on a day to day, but can be extremely reliable. Letting it warm up, not cranking and instantly killing it, premixing if you're extremely anal. Otherwise check your oil. They are also capable of generating massive power in a smaller package. And they are simple to work on. It's like anything that isn't a 2j. Treat it like shit and it will be shit. 2j engines, Chevy smallblocks, and the rb26 can be treated bad. They like abuse and keep going with it. Had an fc I used to beat the shit out of on the road, but upgraded mixing valves, and proper operational rituals helped me get about 200,000 out of the engine before swapping in a lovely 20b

@ShaunFVG6 жыл бұрын
Etherion I didn't say anything on consumption. These cars were not made for economy cars. We are speaking on reliability. Based on your post, that group of people shouldn't own a rotary. That's like buying a foxbody gt then crying "only 12 miles per gallon!" Consumption isn't a factor on reliability of rotary. Buying 1 you should know the basic information. The Rx8 for example is the most practical of the rx series. However it still consumes a lot. Now if we talk about a idk a Chevy cobalt, and it consumes a lot of oil, then there is a problem. We are speaking towards reliability. And a rotary is extremely reliable when treated well.

Thats not a rotary engine it is a wankle. A rotary engine looks like but predates the radial engine. Diference is rotary engine has a non rotating crank shaft bolted to the fire wall. The entire engine spins the crank remains still. Imagine a cartoon wear upon grabing an air plane propeller and the entire plane spins around..
@Cuccos195 жыл бұрын
Very true, that's the real rotary engine what you described. Like a radial engine working "upside down" (camshaft stays, whole engine block revolves). They were used in the very early stage of aviation (and on some non aerial vehicles too) to get more efficient cooling at relatively low speed. The big disadvantage was that it made a huge torque and made the aircraft tricky to fly (300-500 kgs of take off weight and the engine itself was 100-150 kgs). They are completely obsolete now. But Wankel engines also called pistonless rotary engines. More precisely Wankel engine is one of the several pistonless rotary engines. I could imagine these engines in LSA or Ultralight aircrafts: kzbin.info/door/JraHIZdQgpTc0z7iWs2Oow

r 12, 2019 at 12:17pm + Cam VanDerHorst By: Cam VanDerHorst, Contributing Writer Mazda has made breakthroughs in rotary technology - and it may return to production soon. Fans of Mazda's rotary engine have spent years lamenting the loss of the unique powerplant and eagerly awaiting its return. In the face of ever-tightening emissions standards and ever-increasing fuel economy requirements, it has seemed - for a while now - that the rotary engine was doomed to remain a relic of the past. Perhaps more so than any other industry rumor, whispers of the rotary's triumphant return have appeared with unmatched regularity, only to wither and die on the vine just as quickly. However, this is no rumor - this comes straight from Ichiro Hirose, the executive in charge of powertrain development at Mazda. More Rotary Rumors: Rotary Fan Renders A Modern RX-7 For 2020 And Beyond Everyone At Mazda Is Dreaming Of A Rotary Sports Car, Says CEO The Australian motoring publication Drive had a chance to speak with Hirose at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, where Mazda was celebrating the reveal of their new CX-30. More important than a new crossover, however, was what was revealed about Mazda's developments in rotary engine technology. According to Hirsoe, what was originally intended as a range extender has grown to become a much more versatile powerplant in light of recent technological breakthroughs. He says that the new flexible rotary hybrid powerplant currently in development is so efficient that it could be sold in any market in the world - even markets with notoriously strict emissions regulations in place. Hirose went on to describe a setup similar to the Toyota Prius, in which the hybrid drivetrain has the versatility to not only generate electricity, but to actually power the drive wheels when needed. This technology, dubbed XEV, may make an appearance in production cars - at least in Australia, and, we'd imagine, Mazda's native Japan - within the next few years. That's perhaps the most promising news yet for the rotary engine faithful. While we may never get another car like the RX-7, we may indeed end up with something even better.

another few differences between piston and rotary motors are that rotary motors are unable to be carbureted and supercharged, but could possibly fit a direct injection system or be turbocharged
@doktorbimmer6 жыл бұрын
*Most Wankel engines were carbureted.. Mercedes-Benz tried unsuccessfully to develop a viable GDI Wankel engine but the Wankel engine simply cannot achieve the required static compression ratios.
