Good advice lol usually when the gov says something is "safe and effective" its far from it. But let em slap a danger label on something and that would be totally safe and effective. We're living in an upside Down backwards clown world lol

Most people i knew had big brown glass bottles of chlordane sitting around in their home shops and sheds when i was young. They treated their homes for termites and many other pests back then as well as pests on fruit trees. I can remember the smell of it as it lingered for days after they sprayed, but there was very few if any mosquitoes and flies throughout the summer, it was a very good product in that respect. Enjoyed the show Mr & Mrs Hoss!

I am with you Greg and I might be wrong too, but I planted my corn, set out my plugs (peppers, tomatoes, melons, cukes, squash and basil) to harden off and plan to get those planted soon. Still have to prepare the bed for my watermelon. The strawberries plugs I got from HT are looking awesome! So glad to finally find a place to get them. Thank you! I did go down the rabbit hole, and it gets just as bad as what is allowed in packaged foods sold in grocery stores and even our fast food. There are much stricter regulations in other countries.

Your analysis of the dirty dozen is probably correct. If you dig into the sample data, you will find data as old as 2002 for items on both lists. Was this data cherry picked to fit desired outcome? Personally I place the article in the "this fits EWG's agenda" category and therefore it's worthless to me. I've been gardening for many years, but you still come up with fresh tips and techniques I need to try. Thank you.

In regards to the netting for strawberries, I have hoops over the two rows (60 ft long rows). The netting stretched over the hoops. There is about four foot of headroom, I crawl down between the rows to pick. Not necessarily real handy, but have not lost any berries to the birds. If I were to do this again the hoops would be longer, giving more headroom. My strawberries are on drip line for irrigation. Found a KZbin site, called “Genius Tomato “, talks about food coming from China. That will really open your eyes. Time to double the garden size! Keep up the good information on your shows. A lot of the information is more for you southern folks, but much information is good for us in the NW.

Maybe that's why cilantro tasts like soap. I can tell you almost immediately whether something has a preservatives in it or a pesticide because it causes a asthma attack. For example... I can not drink any coffee from that most popular coffee shop because they use pesticides on growing coffee crops for their shop, also I can't drink certain wines because of the preservative they sometimes use. It causes severe asthma problems and not worth drinking any of it.

Thanks for the information! Mama Hoss, the painted strawberries sound like such a cute idea. Unfortunately, the deer eat my strawberry plants and leave the fruit on the ground. The netting would have to be electrified to work. Yes, there's already deer in the freezer. I'm making another attempt at deer/raccoon/possum/armadillo/turkey proofing this year that will make my garden look like a penitentiary.

I am such a fan of deep dives into gardening topics, and this week's video was a timely and useful one. I have young basil plants under grow lights, just waiting for their turn to go outside for the warm season, and while I'm honestly not worried about the store-bought dried basil in my pantry, I am very much looking forward to having plenty of fresh basil to use and plenty more to share and preserve. Old Goat is either hiding behind the bunny or trying to whisper in its ears. Perhaps there are secrets to share, or maybe he's just getting fashion advice from the dapper bunny with a polka-dot bowtie. What secrets does Old Goat know, and will the bunny reveal them? Only time will tell.

Often times pesticides are used for convenience, when there are other ways and will grow clean, healthy food. Cheap food is not necessarily good food. Government regulations are determined ( mosty) by the lobbyists that contribute ( bribe) with the most money. It's best to know your farmer.

I've been gardening for awhile like you I feel it time to get going. I'm in zone 9 here in panama city. I started my garden early I measured the soil temperature and waited till it reach 68 degree before I started putting my tomatoes in containers which I started in Jan. I Felt it was warm enough to put corn in the ground? But it wouldn't come up? I waited 14 day s. Nothing, I had a few. So my neighbor and I talk to each other on a day-to-day basis. And he's a gardener. We talk about moon phase the zodiac and all that. Well I've waited to plant my corn again after the spring equinox to plant. So I'm waiting to see if this makes a difference. I can tell you the weeds are coming up! So the science with soil temperature warm days, etc doesn't always work? So my thoughts are when the best time to start an early garden.

Agree completely with the problems with such a miniscule percentage of produce being tested. Incomplete, inconclusive, for sure. I'd be curious to know how they selected the small sample size from Florida and California, etc. Who gets tested?? Random? Draw names out of the hat? Testing by volume? (largest producers, etc). I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the problem was bigger than that report indicates.

I'm itching to get stuff in the ground already, but we still show one night next week where it may be in the mid 30'ish. I need to wait as I just have enough starts for our garden beds with little extra this year (saving seeds "just in case"). As to pesticides (and other stuff), that is one of the huge plus points for a home garden. You know exactly what was put on the plants and fruits. I do use sprays, but stick to OMRI certified products and apply as directed only when needed (spinosad, etc...). A few years back they traced the Western USA lettuce ecoli outbreaks to field hands relieving themselves in the fields which made it into the irrigation trenches for the lettuce. That alone is an argument to grow your own lettuce (not to mention the current prices) as that is super easy to grow in beds, tubs, containers, or even Kratky hydroponic tubs (no electricity needed). Of the stuff on the dirty dozen list we grow our own spinich, greens, peppers, beans, and of course blueberries. As for our buddy the Old Goat, he is talking to his friend the Easter Bunny on the shelf behind and above Greg (behind the white bunny). But like I said, with the weather warming I'm itching to "Get Dirty"!!!!!!.
