I served with the Royal Artillery from 1974 to 1985. During the first year of training, I was also bullied as I was very thin and weak. Once I joined my Regiment no more bullying. But I've seen a lot. Soldiers from rough upbringing were bullies to the weaker soldiers. It was the bullies who would get promoted first. The only option for those being bullied, was to leave the Army. I saw many fine and intelligent soldiers leaving because of this.. I enjoyed being in the Army, but the bullying was the worst part. Nothing was ever done to stop it. If anything it the bully would be seen as the better soldier and soon become the NCOs

My god the top brass do close ranks when it goes wrong. There is still bullying and racism in the Army. It's just one of those things. Also getting promoted is not how good you are at your job its about if your face fits and if your liked that is why the Army is on a downward trend and no one really wants to join the Army anymore, which I think is very sad.

From the outside looking at the Army it all looks fine n dandy. However, scratch away at the surface and it’s anything but. I was attached to 2nd Battalion Coldstream guards and because my cap badge was different I was ostracised by most of them. Nobody would sit next to, or opposite me in the cookhouse, got snide verbal abuse by many and a couple of threats. Little I could have done, so had to put up with it. I was told others before me had similar experiences. Pathetic attitude.

Have veterans UK seeing me tomorrow regarding this very issue, plus also to discuss my discharge given new medical evidence found on a recent MRI spinal scan. Some ASMs/NCO's are bullies so I hope I get my karma.

We need to force the MOD to stop this by following the steps that were used to stop racism in the ranks. We need soldiers who know what is the true line between right and wrong to strike. This is every soldier from Private to General, Infantryman to members of UKSF. They should use technology and social media eg Instagram,Twitter and Facebook etc to publicise it. Then the MOD will be forced to change.

The only way to stop this kind of bullying is for all the officers, senior NCOs and junior soldiers to undergo compulsory anti bullying training from Sandhurst,Pirbright right up the chain of command. It must be repeated on every training course; the duty of candour-the soldier's obligation to report any misconduct they observe or they could face charges for keeping quiet. Strong action against the perpetrators where there are substantiated complaints will show that bullying is not acceptable. Finally, any officer who threatens the victim into silence needs to understand that this is an offence under both military and civilian law: Conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline, in civilian law; witness tampering. Both can lead to steep fines and custodial sentences. Bullies don't deserve a platoon commander's loyalty;they deserve a dishonourable discharge. Any unit can function just fine without the unit bully.

Your dead right. This needs to be addressed and stopped. Also this is why nobody wants to join the army because of bullying, prejudice and racism. The MOD needs to dishonourably discharge officers and NCOs for bullying and forcing the victims to be silent.
