I didn’t start surfing until 1994, but I lost a fine mate named Mark, here in Oregon. We both drove VW busses, miss Mark something fierce. RIP mate.

I was born & raised on a small east coast beach in nz. By the early 80's i was in the water surfing, fishing & swimming all day, everyday. I would regularly jump out the window at nite, only to be found on the beach, mingling amongst the bon fires which were filled with like minded teens, 20's & so forth. Drugs, alcohol & of course fireworks were found everywhere. We were regularly raided by the local cops who were too thin on the ground & since we were all fit & fast, they never caught anyone except those were had already *crashed. Heady days & beautiful waves!

Nahhh… turn off the fear mongering news! I am a child of the 80s and as a grom then I wouldn’t even dream on surfing by the hevys along with keeping clear if I wasn’t at my home break. Wayyyy more love in the lineup these days.

Born in 62. Social situations are guided by the largest age demographic. Right now, we have extremism. 60+ verses 30s. The more people argues, the more extreme these groups become. It will all die down. We're just repeating the 60s right now.

Anyone who knew surfing in the 70's remembers a time before cell phones, surf cams, watching the way the gulls were facing to tell if the wind had gone offshore, and a time when the sport wasn't completely exploited.

I was on the northern beaches in the 70’s and yep a few died from heroin. There’s this mad pic in surfing world of one of the king brothers in this huge barrel at little Avalon offshore and off it’s guts years ago. Michael king it was. Late 80’s maybe into the 90’s Michael died on the needle and his younger brother too. Insidious drug that has taken untold to the grave……..

The Hamptons in eastern long island new York have great waves and in the 70s a unbelievable surfer ? Rasmussen...found shot dead in Harlem and not another peep about it. Not anything...just wondering because he was getting national fame for his prowess in east coast waves which nobody did.
