I wanted a Tesla roof but $100 grand slowed me down

When they put a tariff on solar panels from China $150k is the starting price for Americans.
@MaxKito23 сағат бұрын
Maybe the system works well depending on the size of the rooftop being covered, the location of the house for daily/yearly sun exposure. What’s confusing, is that there are many videos of some American homes adopting solar panels successfully, but not from Tesla. So maybe just maybe Tesla or Elon overpromised and under delivered and that’s why their result. Plus this ain’t cheap at all regardless of whichever company a person chooses.

I worked at tesla as a solar installer in Portland OR for a year, there were so many customer complaints, delays backlog, panel problems etc.. it was labor intensive, hazardous work. It makes a lot of sense what Tesla is doing to try and get away from it.. it just doesn't make economical sense
@yvanpajevic96803 сағат бұрын
Yeah but they were supposed to find a way to make it easy and profitable. They failed. This is a loss and it sucks. Nothing's perfect, not even Tesla.
@JasonStewart-d8t3 сағат бұрын
@yvanpajevic9680 agreed, I was disappointed going in as a new hire at Tesla thinking this was going to be a booming industry / segment. Some things just don't work out but it seems it didn't cause too much damage to their plans as their commercial energy is doing well

Cost is the biggest issue. I was quoted $200k roughly for a solar roof. As you mentioned Asian panels are cheap. The same solar system in Australia would cost about 5x-10x less. The logic of start expensive and go down doesn’t work so well in an industry most Americans see as optional. In Texas, thr payback on a system like this is 100 years. No way worth it. Now if they put focus into solar, (Elon did say it was one of his life goals) subsidies solar installs, make the cheap and worthwhile, while increasing output, then people would buy them.

Solar for homes is difficult because roofs are irregular. Solar farms integrated into the energy grid are a much better option.

The only real problem was not putting them on the roof of new houses before the house goes up for sale. That would solve all the problems. A roof that will power your home for 50+ years! No electrical connection! No power bill, ever!

TSLA should only do the low hanging fruit. New construction where ALL the needs are met in construction. They should be also building solar fields. Preferably next to MegaPack installations. Why they are not running hard to develop designed solar/charging/megapacks/travel centers. Imagine a 100 acres of sustainable development. This would be a huge profit center.

The next thing that Elon needs to do is to team up with @CaseyPutsch aka Casey the Car Guy and combine all the best aspects of Tesla's cars with the new Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology AND the best aspects of Casey's concept car the Omega-Car, Which runs off of a 1.9 liter Volkswagon Desil engine... **Omega Car vs. Traditional Vehicle (1994 Corvette):** * **Fuel Efficiency:** The Omega Car achieves approximately 104.7 miles per gallon on diesel, while the 1994 Corvette achieved 34 miles per gallon on gasoline. * **Greenhouse Gas Emissions:** For a 100-mile drive, the Omega Car produces 21,201 pounds of CO2 emissions, whereas the 1994 Corvette emits 55.86 pounds of CO2. **Omega Car vs. Tesla Model 3:** * **Fuel Consumption:** The Omega Car uses 0.955 gallons of diesel per 100 miles, while the Tesla Model 3 (rear-wheel drive) requires approximately 27.3 kW hours to travel 100 miles. * **Equivalent Energy Density:** The Omega Car has an equivalent energy density of 36.23 kWh/gallon, whereas the Tesla Model 3 does not have a direct equivalent (as it's an electric vehicle). * **CO2 Emissions:** For a 100-mile drive, the Omega Car produces 21,201 pounds of CO2 emissions, whereas the Tesla Model 3 emits approximately 23.5 pounds of CO2. **Additional Comparison Points:** * **Range and Tank Size:** The Omega Car has a larger tank capacity (500 miles) compared to the Tesla Model 3 (210 miles for the rear-wheel drive model). * **Energy Source:** The Omega Car uses diesel fuel, while the Tesla Model 3 is powered by electricity generated from various sources. **Calculations and Assumptions:** * To calculate the equivalent energy density of diesel, Casey multiplied the amount of diesel used by the EPA's kilowatt-hour equivalency factor (37.95) and obtained a value of 36.23 kWh/gallon. * The calculations for CO2 emissions assume that the electricity generated for the Tesla Model 3 is produced by a mix of energy sources for electricity generation, including coal-based power plants, natural gas-based power plants, and renewable energy sources based on national averages...

Stanford Ovshinsky was a prolific inventor of modern technology, including amorphous materials. In the early 2000nds he developed a new kind of solar platform. Solar material could be produced in pieces about a mile long. They could be cut to any length. One could drive a spike through them without destroying or short circuiting them. He built the mile long factory. But by the Obama administration China began a program of massive subsidies to their solar producers to capture the world market. This drove US companies like Ovshinsky's and Solyndra into bankruptcy. Obama could have prevented this by buying from home grown sources for government installations, but didn't. Perhaps Tesla should license his patents, make improvements, and create its own inexpensive and damage resistant solar using that process in a dedicated solar Gigafactory.

I inquired to Tesla about 6 years ago regarding solar plus Powerwall. My roof will need to be replaced by 2027 and I’m hoping that I can install a solar roof rather than attaching panels. Never had a response.

As soon as you have to rely on local contractors, you are screwed. Getting an affordable, consistent, quality product out of general contractors is pretty much impossible.

Too complicated, too much work, not enough corners to cut, the Chinese government is giving massive subsidies for their solar panel production anyways. The cost benefit of Tesla Solar is just too low for them right now and they don't want to invest money or people or time into that.

Tesla's solar division has struggled due to competition from China, manufacturing challenges, and pricing issues. While not dead, it's underperforming expectations set in 2016-2017. Tesla continues to promote solar products but has shifted focus to conventional panels over solar roofs.

Tesla should have offered a PAID assesment service prior to accepting orders, ie, won't install if your house is above x years old, if the structural beams on the roof are worn out, if there are leaks for rain, too many surfaces, etc etc etc Otherwise the business model is a NIGHTMARE when it comes to customer service/warranties etc.

Imagine if you could have one battery storage sale to say a utility in CA and just have to work with one client rather than thousands of individual installs. Called go after the low-hanging fruit.
@GershonBenYitzhak4 сағат бұрын
Just make solar farms and give everyone some batteries and have them pay for electricity. Done. We don't all need solar on our roofs. But we do need to massively scale up solar farms.

@@DraftedByTheMan i mean, ya, if you have the money to pimp your house out with solar... then you still need to invest in batteries. like i said, bad in practice

Well considering I have heard that Elon Musk FINALLY wants to try going the Hydrogen route it may not be the "END" of his solar decision, Hopefully just expending a little less time and energy on solar so that there is more time and energy for hydrogen.
