Their attempt failed. You can criticize their attempt to contain the balloons but it is simply incorrect to act as if they all failed to even consider what would happen when releasing that many balloons. 1970's there was a show call WKRP Cincinnati. One episode they had a turkey drop (from a helicopter) for thanksgiving. The joke was the birds don't fly and were released too high in the air and damaged the city. Fast forward a decade and someone in Ohio actually does some similar but the other way ( balloons going up) with the same results.

The balloons didn’t kill anyone. The car accidents were caused by drivers who chose to be distracted while driving at high speeds. If you want to look at a something major like this you pull over and then look, not while driving at high speeds through traffic. As for the fishermen, they were dead long before the search begun. Sad reality is that most search and rescues are looking for people who have been in an accident that either kills them immediately or at least quick enough that they are dead before people notice they are missing.

I have never agreed with people releasing balloons. They do end up coming down at some point. And farm animals eat them or they end up in the water where they also get eaten.
