Discord, Discord, Discord... We all hate it, but we all still use it. But who, and what, is actually behind the largest "gaming" messenger? Should we really trust it? What about its sketchy history with furries?

This general hate about anything not completely open is just sad and angering. (I myself am person for open-source, making and wanting to make more CC0/BY assets but...) I tried hard to agree with you on anything in first half of the video but after finishing watching it just seems to me like another longterm-accumulated-anger video like most known videos are. Don't get me wrong I like your channel. But this just felt like little-researched (in a good way meaning - feeling like it contains good data, fair-quantity but lacking parts, arguments and their explanations) yet heavily unexplored/biased review of a service's behavior uninformed about status & challenges of the comms/social platforms scene. It would be fine if wasn't affecting opinions of a such mass (not necessarily this video) ------------------------- Every platform as huge as discord has to have these tiring ToS and related documents not only because of dozen of variations of country laws (since you're global) but mainly to prevent and lessen pressure from other parties. (individuals threatening (usually naturally "spamming" or making good points while unfortunately many times not being able to afford official dispute costs themselves), organisation lawsuits (mostly to steal power/money)). In discord's case all this is amplified (hard to secure themselves against lawsuits/bankruptcy) because of it's capabilities it's giving to it's users (bot automation, integrations, file hosting, advanced streaming, quality specialized external features (e.g. advanced noise cancellation), etc.). For the public data visible, I don't have my own research on this - but the ones specified (except for account creation date if true) may be completely reasonable given the bots and depth of integration (since otherwise would for ex. many features require every user on every servers they're in to give access to his/her data to all individual bots used (and every time a new ones are added). To private data collected.. Except for the common obvious (IP logging) and since from what was shown is understandable for what is said here... How can you try to fairly focus your efforts on service that's used by tens of millions of active people when you don't have data that you can connect together to make better decisions. So many people that'd have been descriptive (good feedback) and on point in forms (if data wasn't collected through app) don't have time/energy/will to do so alongside their lives. Those who do USUALLY don't treat their free time well, have enough money support and care less about it. Lack of theming and modification (for accessibility) is completely valid point but in most software, I believe, there's common experience of heavy exploitation (some modders aren't that pure "when a loot is this great") and ruining of experience (ex. missing text, color change missing, overflow, etc.). If you as a company have to for ex. deal-with/prove that someone didn't saw the accompanying policy text when (for ex.) a feature such as advanced noise canceling is introduced because your grey theme wasn't updated for this kind of tag (if css) and it wasn't visible, then of course you would, with many other reasons that are not only tied to structural decisions but will come up along the way, decide you will state that you won't be officially allowing this kind of usage. Even GNOME Linux env. had similar concerns some time ago. Do you even realize how much is discord open to customization of the whole platform especially when you compare it to others (channels, apps) and what they provide in a solid structure for free, what they have to maintain? I agree it should be better in accessibility but that's a talk for another day. People should be fighting misinformation and researching in relations (industry as whole or larger groups of entities and their decisions) rather than focusing on just one. Of course Discord and Google (for. ex.) have larger questionable decisions, history and status (ex. "How can discord even make enough money") and that should be discussed but are you really looking at the bigger picture here? Why lynch these organizations that still actually provide great help, support, many reliable free services (considered best for many for reason that are not just marketed) and even still have people who want to be honestly open (not planned as financial business strategy from the start) while there are many more and potentially bigger that'll never truly change (only in minds of the public) and mute & take whatever they can while remaining cautious. (M$, 🍏, etc.) The only way you can avoid this (not needing to collect and moderate most of this data at least for law compliance) is to remain small, silent or change focus/industry (not anything with multimedia). For some time, until laws will be looser, becoming decentralized might temporarily help - hopefully while you (who decide to go this way) are not making the enforcement details worse for everyone in the future - but... Be wary as it may be HIGHLY inethical and damaging in many fields. (ex. for everything you do (data collected) while remaining connected to the network (less than easy in the potential future) you lose many important rights including the "Right to be forgotten" as there'll always be someone who might have your data, decrypt 'em (if you'll be important for someone enough later) and redistribute it again.

The main point of it is that Discord is a product, and we pay for it with our data (and money in the case of Nitro). What we have to do is decide which products we want to support, and which we don't. We need to support good products that are as fair as possible to both the consumer and the producer. That's why the "Right to Repair" thing is bullshit. It wouldn't be a damn problem if people would stop buying shitty Apple products that are unfair to the consumer. Making Daddy-God-Imperator Government force Apple to change things is backward authoritarian bullshit. If enough people just stopped buying iphones, they would have no choice but to be more fair. And if you buy them anyway, then understand that YOU agreed to the ToS of the phone, and you accept that you can't fix it yourself. That's how markets fucking work, but most people don't even understand concepts as basic as that. That goes for software too. Don't like how Social Media sites treat you and other people? Minorly inconvenience yourself, and stop using them. If you don't, then you are showing that you value the service enough that it outweighs the problems. For example, I still use Discord just to talk to my 1 friend, who refuses to change chat clients. I value talking to her, more than the data harvesting and freedom problems. Kinda like you can hate the exorbitant price of a certain food and the size of the portion, but buy it anyway because you value the taste more than the cost. If better alternatives exist, that offer a better product/service for a lower price (including sacrifice of privacy and freedom), then we need to buy/support that product. That's why I use Linux, it's a better quality product than Windows and costs almost nothing; in both money and freedom. It's like the difference of a $5 homemade burger, vs a $500 Big Mac. We automatically know which is a better value, even subconsciously, our brains are AMAZING at judging value. We just have to learn to apply that to software too.
