The Discovery of King Tut

The Discovery of King Tut

8 жыл бұрын

In November 1922, after five years of searching, Howard Carter and his patron Lord Carnarvon finally discovered the last resting place of Tutankhamun. His tomb was found directly beneath the tomb of Ramesses VI, which had been built much later on. As a result, the debris from the construction had been dumped into the entrance to Tutankhamun’s tomb - a stroke of luck for us today, since the boy king’s tomb does remained intact and hidden for more than 3,000 years.
Two figures standing guard indicated where the entrance to the burial chamber must be. On February 17th 1923, Carter began tearing down the wall that separated the antechamber from the mummy of the Pharaoh.
When the opening was large enough, Carter was able to peek through and spied a wall of gold. This later turned out to be a golden shrine. Between the shrine and the chamber walls there was just enough room to squeeze through.

Can’t imagine how many people on the streets of ancient Egypt that time when their king was about to laid rest. Must be a big event, who knows how extravagant their ritual was.

They’d lived through several monarchs dying in a short time, compared to people who lived under rulers like Ramesses or Pepi, who lived a Looooooooooong time. Malaria hit Egypt during the Amarna period and wiped out a lot of the royal family, Tuts mummy even tested positive for it. I love the 18th dynasty, but I would think people may have been relieved that phase of rule was over, and all its instability, even if I think Horemheb was a dick.

It's fascinating all the history we are only uncovering now in the modern era. Who would have believed such things existed. I mean people even though Moses and the Exodus was fable till the massive discovery of dozens of sites of the Exodus around a decade ago. It's crazy even after all this time we are still finding all this stuff in the middle east.

The tomb contents are actually only worth about a billion. So technically Bezos swamps that. It’s also funny how people forget, or likely just don’t know, HOW Egypt got rich, which was by brutal subjugation of their neighbors - like Nubia and the “asiatics”.

The miniature coffins that contained the organs is inside a glass tube, was it originally found in the glass tube? did ancient Egyptians know how to make glass?
@mikesully110
@mikesully110 3 жыл бұрын
no, the glass tube is just to display what is inside the outer canopic jar. Just so the museum visitors can see what was inside them. I think the canopic coffins were underneath the glazenware ones inside that box. If they were kept as in real life museum visitors wouldn't be able to see them. It confused me at first as well when I saw modern looking glass or plastic.

it is quite clear to me that ancient Egyptian society consisted of mixed races. the gaurds in tut's tomb were clearly black, yet tut was clearly not. Nefertiti was not black, but was definitely the mother of a royal wife, and wife to a pharaoh. there were white members and black members. very little was made of it, btw, back then. so it seems to me that in ancient Egypt they lived in a mixed race society, and they didn't make anything of it.
