I love how you have reframed the story: i'm so used to the story of Henry that I kinda forgot how awful it must have been for the people actually involved, and what it was to be a woman back then. Thank you :)

It’s a myth that Anne seduced the king, it was actually the other way round. Anne ignored the king and went back to her home at Hever castle for a year just to get away from him. It’s also believed that she didn’t celebrate Catherine’s death or wear yellow but henry. It’s annoying when people paint Anne as an evil person when that’s totally not the case. She was murdered by the king and his men, accused of crimes she didn’t even commit. The least people could do is understand she wasn’t as horrible as people have been making her out to be for the past 500 years.

Henry married Anne of Cleeves 1540, three years after Janes death, so not QUICK at all. Henrys 'disgusting' treatment of EVERYBODY is generally thought to stem from a serious head injury he recieved during a bout of jousting. Brain damage has been known to dramatically change s person's personality. Prior to this he was a kind, generous and much loved king.

He began making arrangements for another marriage 4 months after she died. He was turned down by some of the women he proposed to and it ended up taking years before he married again, but he did move on quite quickly after mourning his "beloved" wife.

@@MEAJJEKL Yeah, after Jane died, Henry had the hots for 16 year old (ugh, I know) Christina of Milan and wanted to marry her. She's the one who sent Henry the sarcastic reply that "if only she had two heads, one would be at his service". Personally I think Henry and Jane's "betrothal" a mere 24 hours after Anne Boleyn's judicial murder kind of usurps marrying Anna of Cleves less than three years after Jane's demise. That shocked people even at the time. In 1536 one extremely cool guy was jailed in the Tower for publicly declaring that Anne Boleyn was innocent and had been beheaded solely so Henry could marry Jane.
@MEAJJEKL2 жыл бұрын
@@Mark-Smeaton I never thought I would ever have a conversation with you 😁 And yes, Henry was most callous with how quickly he moved on from Anne. I personally believe that Jane was already pregnant at the time of Anne's trial, because of a few reasons: he wouldn't have risked another marriage, especially one so hot on the heels of "an adulterous wife" without CERTAINY that the new one could give him a child. Eustace Chapuys also mentioned that he did not think Jane was a virgin, and if she was already pregnant by Henry then she wasn't! I have read a source (I wish I could find it now but I can't remember specifically from where I found it) that in September of 1536 Jane had a stillborn daughter. For it to have been a stillbirth rather than a miscarriage, she would have needed to be full term, meaning a January to early March at the latest conception. She was DEFINITELY pregnant BEFORE Anne's trial if that report was true. And we do know for a fact that she had gotten pregnant at least once before having Edward, and that resulted in a miscarriage. Looking at Henry's previous behaviors, he probably had a secret ceremony with Jane promising to be rid of Anne very soon, got her pregnant, then had Cromwell quickly dispatch his wife "judicially". This is the same pattern he used WITH Anne, having a secret wedding in France then conceiving Elizabeth, declaring his marriage to Catherine null and void through Bishop Cranmer, and officially marrying an already pregnant Anne. Why use a different formula if the original one worked well enough? Just my personal theory though! So if Jane was already pregnant, that would explain why Henry married her so quickly after Anne's execution. It doesn't make it less callous at all, but it gives an immediate "need" for the marriage whereas after Jane's death, he already had his son and noone already knocked up waiting in the wings. He was restless and wanted to be "in love" again.

Anne Boleyn was most definitely murdered mostly for confronting him about Jane but also for the Miscarriage of the bo which only happened because she was afraid over his accident so much for gratitude and true she insisted they marry before she have him and that ended bad for Catherne but that also lays at Henry's feet more than hers and she may have been callous to Catherine and Mary but how much was Henry's influence we do not know doesn't make 100% right but Henry is holding the cards here he is in charge and he was the cruelest one to his 1st daughter and wife ! and then to Anne and her Daughter with him and then we have Jane he even threatened her once basically woman don't sass me or I will do to you what I had done to Anne Boleyn he didn't say those words but that is the gist of it 1 And then there is Catherine Howard his child bride! atleast Anne got a trial Catherine Howard was accused charged beheaded! No trial no chance I mean Anne had no chance either but even less for Poor Catherine

I’m no fan of Henry Viii but the only time that England had had a woman on the throne, the country had been split by civil war. Henry needed to pass the Tudor crown on at a time when there were still York loyalists which created extra pressure. There was also doubt as to whether or not Katherine of Aragon had been truthful when she said her marriage to his brother had not been consummated. Henry had been a very religious man so poor Katherine’s continual miscarriages and the fact the only surviving child was a daughter may have started to seem like a curse. By the time he decided to marry Anne, Katherine had reached the end of her childbearing years so you could argue that Henry gave her as long as possible. Even her uncle advised her to retire to a convent which wouldn’t have led to Princess Mary being declared illegitimate but Katherine refused. It’s possible that Henry turned into a complete monster regarding his wives due to his feeling that Anne had betrayed him and after that blow to his head while jousting. Also, I believe he decided against having Katherine Parr arrested. The way it is phrased here suggests that she was still under arrest when he died.

Susan C Henry used religion and the word of God and twisted it to fit his agenda why would Catherine lie it wasn't an issue for him still he needed an excuse to push her out of his life when he married her he knew full well her brother had been married to her he died 5 months after the mariage I know they had time but the most of it they were sick and I don't think she would lie about it because she would probably be found out and Henry as I said did not care till he needed it to suit him he had wanted to Marry her and been Happy supposedly till he saw his boy was not comng and she was becoming too old that still makes him in my mind a Narcissist Psychopath being religious also doesn't mean your a good man of God religion could be devisive and manipulated b

A male monarch was expected to have mistresses. It was a position at court. Of course it's not kind per se, but it's not abuse. You can't judge this by today's standards. Also none of them (except AB) married the king for love. It might be nice to have other women take care of your husband if you don't really like him...

Having mistresses was perfectly normal for a king of the age on not considered cruel. When pregnant, the queen would always be advised not to have sex as it was thought dangerous for the unborn child. It was also considered unhealthy for the king’s seed to remain celibate for long periods.

Wedded, bedded, beheaded, hmm. Beheaded is a Feudal term for ceasing diplomatic relations with who ever. He married two women in normal ife and politics wrote the rest.
